No matter where you live or what industry you work in, you got hit by the pandemic. Out of nowhere, our everyday lives have significantly changed. Most of us tried to pull it together and find out how to move forward; and ultimately it turned out that the only reliable answer to this global challenge for all of us is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-unlikely-rise-of-science-and-digital-health-during-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">science\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>For what is clear for me as a doctor, a scientist and as a human being, is that we could only move forward with an efficient vaccine,\u003Cbr>and if everyone around the globe lets vaccinate themselves.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>That is when the period of hope can begin\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Long before the summer, I \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoutu.be\u002FlvPjeJbk9V4\" target=\"_blank\">outlined 3 scenarios\u003C\u002Fa> in a video that based on the data and trends I see, there will definitely be approved vaccines by Q1 of 2021, maybe even before. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftracking-covid-19-vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\">Vaccine production\u003C\u002Fa> and development are since ongoing and as transparent as can be – and to whoever questions the speed of the development and argues that it poses threats to the vaccine’s efficacy, I can give a simple answer. For you must know that there were \u003Cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u003Cstrong>no corners cut\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fspan>in the clinical trials and approval processes. These are up to all the standards and deemed safe by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fvaccines\u002Fbasics\u002Ftest-approve.html\" target=\"_blank\">separate\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Femergency-preparedness-and-response\u002Fcoronavirus-disease-2019-covid-19\u002Fcovid-19-vaccines\" target=\"_blank\">independent\u003C\u002Fa> regulatory \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gov.uk\u002Fgovernment\u002Fpublications\u002Fregulatory-approval-of-covid-19-vaccine-astrazeneca\" target=\"_blank\">bodies\u003C\u002Fa>. The studies were published in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FNEJMoa2034577\">high-\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FNEJMoa2034577\" target=\"_blank\">level\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flancet\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS0140-6736(20)32661-1\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\">international\u003C\u002Fa>, peer-reviewed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcoronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">medical journals\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Now a different race begins\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A race about who can get back to life and work sooner. Which countries can open up for tourism and business faster than the others. And despite the fact that vaccine distribution is indeed about money and connections (although \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F05\u002Fasia\u002Fpalau-covid-vaccine-intl-hnk\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">not in every case\u003C\u002Fa>), the governing bodies of healthcare all try to ensure the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.voanews.com\u002Fcovid-19-pandemic\u002Fwho-equitable-global-distribution-2-billion-covid-19-vaccine-doses-begin-2021\" target=\"_blank\">ethical distribution\u003C\u002Fa> of doses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on the supply chain improvements of the companies that have an approved vaccine. It seems we will have dozens of more vaccines in months – we wrote an article about \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftracking-covid-19-vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\">where to track them\u003C\u002Fa>. With the use of vaccines, we were able to avoid previously deadly illnesses, and live a longer and healthier life. Unfortunately, misinformation tends to spread more quickly than scientific papers; and as a result, outbreaks of illnesses that once have been eradicated still happen time to time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is where communication gets into the picture. If misinformation is spreading and the people don’t get good enough answers from their government or medical association, they will not believe science – and they won’t get vaccinated. And if you have a look at the table below you’ll see which governments have done a good job so far.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ciframe src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fourworldindata.org\u002Fgrapher\u002Fcovid-vaccination-doses-per-capita?tab=chart&stackMode=absolute&time=latest&region=World\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px; border: 0px none;\">\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Having doubts ≠ stupidity\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Having doubts about new things, especially when it comes to one’s health is understandable. It’s easy to be afraid of the unknown (this is what I also say in my keynotes about artificial intelligence). But this time, we don’t have much time to be afraid. Unless we want COVID to stay with us a little longer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you worry about how the new type of mRNA vaccines work, read about them in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicalnewstoday.com\u002Farticles\u002Fhow-do-mrna-vaccines-work#What-is-different-about-mRNA-vaccines?\" target=\"_blank\">reliable resources\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you worry about the long-term consequences (which no data indicate for now after having tested the vaccine on tens of thousands of people and vaccinating already millions), you might want to wait out. But then we’ll be in lockdown for years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Lockdown for 3-5 years\u003C\u002Fstrong>?!\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I repeat: no data indicate that the vaccines will have long-term medical complications. To see in practice if that’s true, you should wait 3-5 years. During this time COVID will be with us night and day, as people will wait it out and not get vaccinated. Over time you are likely to get COVID anyway sooner or later; and that is a Russian roulette whether it just goes through you without symptoms or you get seriously ill, no matter how fit or healthy you now are. We, at The Medical Futurist, trust science and vaccines we can read the studies about. Studies that were published in international, high-level, peer-reviewed journals to make sure that other, relevant researchers could also validate the results. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The pledge we make is that we will get vaccinated with any vaccine that is approved by the FDA, WHO or the EMEA as soon as possible. No wonder we are all waiting for the year to end and find some peace of mind that it will all be over soon – and that 2021 will be better.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And hope, indeed, is what we have. Because throughout 2020, amazing advances have given hope that rose in science, technology, digital health, leadership and in basic human care and kindness. Anti-racist books topping the lists. More people wash hands than ever before. Neighbours caring, dogs adopted and people start searching for the real meaning of their lives. Although the current affairs always took the focus off of these positive consolidations, they were there and will stay with us in the future, giving hope not only for 2021 but for the years and decades way beyond it. They have reached the third phase of testing and early November they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Farticle\u002Fhealth-coronavirus-vaccines-pfizer-factb-idUSKBN27P209\" target=\"_blank\">became the first drugmakers\u003C\u002Fa> to show success in a large-scale clinical trial of a coronavirus vaccine.\u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>It shows that science can indeed save us. Not politicians, not empty promises and not beliefs, but science. Before the crisis there was already a huge burden on healthcare and it sure wasn’t high on the list of priorities by governments. \u003Cstrong>Now it is.\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Due to better diagnostics over the past couple of years, the number of chronic patients has been growing at an astonishing rate, putting a huge burden on doctors in the first place. On top of this came an even worse adversary that was invisible, fearful and deadly. And yet, medical personnel and medical systems were able to react in a matter of moments. They have been working tirelessly since the outbreak, often without sufficient protective gears and enough sleep, keeping the frontlines of healthcare and risking their own lives to save others.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And the background infrastructure is working tirelessly as well. I followed the studies and publications appearing in relation with the virus and the pandemic until the end of summer; but by now there are so many that it is no longer possible to keep up to date. Telemedicine applications, devices and platforms, A.I., therapeutic solutions, drug combinations, network science… Thousands and thousands of studies have come out in so many areas, researchers and institutions have responded so quickly that it is unprecedented in the history of humankind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Today, decision-makers have realised that no society can live without well-operating healthcare. Maybe we needed a global stressful event that is a warning big enough for us to notice.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-solid-color\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>Because the real crisis of our lifetime is the impending climate catastrophe.
