But what if it’s not? It is a fact that millions of healthcare workers are missing around the globe. Whether we miss \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.euro.who.int\u002Fen\u002Fhealth-topics\u002FHealth-systems\u002Fhealth-workforce\u002Fdata-and-statistics#:~:text=More%20specifically%20the%20Global%20Strategy,and%20midwives%20globally%20by%202030.\" target=\"_blank\">10 million\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.projecthope.org\u002Fthe-global-health-worker-shortage-10-numbers-to-note\u002F04\u002F2022\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">18 million \u003C\u002Fa>depends on who you ask. We also know that the number of patients in need of healthcare is only growing. And it also seems pretty obvious that with the current medical training models (and healthcare financing) we will never be able to fill this gap. Thus, expecting that A.I. will step in and take over some of the tasks from human practitioners seems only logical. And necessary.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Logical, necessary, but uncanny. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We slowly grow accustomed to interacting with A.I. Whether it’s the assistant in our phones or a chatbot at a random support service introducing him\u002Fher\u002Fitself as a person but strangely phrasing the same question exactly the same way thrice. After all, ever cheerful Siri failing to understand a fairly simple request is nothing substantial. All the A.I. personas I regularly interact with have one thing in common. They are responsible for nothing crucial. Figuring out why the software I use suddenly fails to work with the same files it worked before might seem important(-ish) at the moment, but it does not require my trust. I might raise an eyebrow when it dawns on me that Terrell is not a human, and the company failed to inform me of this fact, but who cares.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr. A.I. and my trust issues\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A.I. and deep fake personas are getting\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fthispersondoesnotexist.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> more and more convincing\u003C\u002Fa>. Just as the flirty ‘actress’\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=gS1m_TIxEW0&t=114s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> in this video\u003C\u002Fa> sounds \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2022\u002F2\u002F17\u002F22936978\u002Fai-voice-speech-synthesis-audio-deepfake-sonantic-flirtation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">human enough\u003C\u002Fa>, in a few years we can expect to video chat with an A.I. looking every bit as human as your doctor. And based on how some companies and service providers like to trick you into believing their chatbot is a real person, we can pretty much expect the same for Dr. A.I. provided to you by your medical insurance company, answering your questions about the symptoms you experience.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What's Her Secret?\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FgS1m_TIxEW0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It would be nice to know that this is an impossible scenario, and regulators will make sure you can never find yourself in a situation like the one I described above. But this might be a bit too optimistic, and I think we better prepare ourselves for a brave new world where spotting a deep fake human becomes an important skill.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Not because I don’t trust that medical A.I. will become competent enough to deal with a great number of basic scenarios. It surely will. Most probably, even today a hefty share of our health questions could be handled efficiently by an algorithm. But a patient-doctor relationship is a unique one as it requires trust above anything else. And \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjama\u002Ffullarticle\u002F194300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">empathic reflection\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Knowing that I interact with Dr. A.I. would be much better than having to guess it. Thinking that I’m talking to a doctor and realising mid-process that this is not the case is the worst scenario I can imagine regarding my trust-in-healthcare issues. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, how can we prepare for a future when we might need the skill to decide if we are talking to a deep fake doctor instead of the real one?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Start training yourself now by catching A.I. chatbots\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even though we are not there yet, you should start practising. Interact with chatbots, with virtual assistants, and take mental notes on the telltale signs helping you spot they are not human. What kinds are the questions they have difficulties interpreting? How do they react to a word joke or to a seemingly irrelevant remark? Can you get them in a repetitive cycle? Do their answers vary to the same question phrased in slightly different ways? Can they explain something in other words? Do they adequately relate to your expressed emotions? Are they able to convincingly reply to how they would feel in your situation? Do they have an opinion on something that is not related to the issue on hand? These are just a few hints, work on your methods, and find the ways helping you the most. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Practise how to spot deep fake\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Norton has a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fus.norton.com\u002Finternetsecurity-emerging-threats-how-to-spot-deepfakes.html\" target=\"_blank\">helpful list\u003C\u002Fa> on how to spot deep fake videos. Of the 15 tricks they listed, we believe these are especially important, and most likely the easiest to spot. Our Dr. A.I. will most likely be fully computer-generated, but learning to keep an eye on the details of something you see on a screen will be useful. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Unnatural eye movements or lack of natural eye movements, such as blinking. Natural eye movement is challenging to replicate. When something about the eyes seems off, it is always a red flag\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Unnatural facial expressions – likewise, facial morphing (when the facial images of two or more individuals are combined) often results in a slightly uncomfortable feeling of something being just not right, always look for it!\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Blurring or misalignment – especially around the edges of a person or an object can also be a sign of merging body parts or objects that originally did not go together\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Hair, teeth or other small details that don’t look real. All right, the extreme effort celebrities put into their hairstyling might make this a bit more difficult, but the lack of natural hair texture, the complete absence of any frizziness or loose strands can also be a warning, just as weird-looking, shape-shifting teeth.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The problem is of course, that some of these signs are not very difficult to spot if you purposefully look for them, but most of us do not put in that kind of effort in a casually watched video. But in the era of the flat earth – we should.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Be mindful if you are passed over to someone else \u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A very common solution for any chatbot \u002F assistant presented as a real human is that they will refer you to a different ‘colleague’ – a real human – if you start questioning whether they are a person or a robot. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, it is quite difficult to predict how convincing the future Dr. A.I. will be – as we are not there yet, and the field is developing with amazing speed. And while on one hand, we are increasingly aware of the presence and capacity of deepfake, developers – most of whom work without a hint of malice – will do everything to do as perfectly as possible. A bit like the constant race between the manufacturers of armors and ammo, spotting and hiding an A.I. parading as a real person will be an ever-evolving battle.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\u003Cp>The moral of the story obviously is not that A.I. shouldn’t have a place in future medicine. It should. It will be the best solution for many areas with significant capacity shortages. But preparing for a scenario when we will have to decide whether to trust the doctor on the screen is real or not is a must. \u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n",false,{"rendered":22,"protected":20},"\u003Cp>Medical A.I. will surely become competent enough to efficiently deal with a great number of health questions.
