If forecasting helps us answer &#8220;what&#8221; might happen, the Futures Wheel helps us understand &#8220;so what?&#8221; – the cascading consequences and opportunities that a single event or trend can set in motion.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While Futures Wheel may sound like a fairground attraction, it is perhaps the simplest method to engage people in thinking about the future in a way that generates a useful, ideally, actionable output.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why would you need a Futures Wheel?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The method’s strength lies in its flexibility. From subtle shifts to major trends, the Futures Wheel is a uniquely flexible tool for having a better understanding of the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to build a Futures Wheel\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Futures Wheel process begins by establishing a well-defined central point, which can be an event, trend, or milestone—practically anything significant in your area of study. The purpose of the Futures Wheel is to understand the cascading effects of this central point.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, let’s start thinking about “\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Full genome sequencing for the price of a blood test\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem>” &#8211; as our starting point.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Once we have our well-defined starting question, we start the work by identifying the \u003Cstrong>primary consequences\u003C\u002Fstrong> – the direct, immediate outcomes that are most likely to occur. These form the first ring around the central point. As you see on our chart, there are many effects, but we pick one here as an example:\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>New laws are needed to protect patients&#8217; privacy\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Once the primary consequences are established, we move outward to the \u003Cstrong>secondary consequences\u003C\u002Fstrong>. These are the outcomes that result from the primary consequences, creating a second ring around the wheel. If we think further from our primary, “new laws are needed” example, we find a next-level effect:\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>\u003Cem>\u003Cstrong>Bioethicists need to be involved in law-making\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>In some cases, it&#8217;s beneficial to go even further and explore \u003Cstrong>tertiary consequences\u003C\u002Fstrong>, the outcomes stemming from the secondary consequences. However, even a Futures Wheel with primary and secondary consequences can provide valuable insights. In fact, cough accounts for \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhow-care-cough-one-top-medical-complaints-can-benefit-rpm-and-ai\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in five reasons\u003C\u002Fa> we seek assistance from a healthcare provider.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While it is a common symptom of an underlying health condition, ranging from reflux to lung cancer, cough has traditionally not been an easy metric to track.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We didn&#8217;t need technologies to be able to differentiate between patients based on coughs, as primary care physicians have been doing that for centuries. But one’s cough can provide insights for self-monitoring, and digital health advances have started to facilitate the cough-tracking process. These could even make cough monitoring as common as step tracking to inform individual patients and provide doctors with deeper health insights.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In this article, we will consider the digital health tools that are facilitating cough monitoring. These can essentially be categorized into two groups: smartphone apps and specialized hardware. Some might target specific conditions, while others might aim at providing some fitness insights to healthy people, akin to fitness trackers.
