How could innovation help make life worth living over 90?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>To be or not\nto be – is this the question?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Humanity has been yearning for the secret of\nimmortality since the first temple for the ever-living Gods was built, which \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.smithsonianmag.com\u002Fhistory\u002Fgobekli-tepe-the-worlds-first-temple-83613665\u002F\">might have been 12,000 years ago in Gobekli Tepe\u003C\u002Fa>, according to the current state of archeology. On the\nother hand, concerns about the quality of eternal life must have emerged at\naround the same time – as some myths and legends demonstrate. According to the\nHomeric \u003Cem>Hymn to Aphrodite\u003C\u002Fem>, when \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.britannica.com\u002Ftopic\u002FTithonus-Greek-mythology\">Zeus was asked to grant prince Tithonus eternal life\u003C\u002Fa>, the god consented. Nonetheless, there was no request\nfor eternal youth, so for thousands of years, Tithonus grew old and withered.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The price of eternal life was the neverending suffering of old age. Although throughout the centuries, we gave up on finding the key to eternal life, \u003Cstrong>the sentiment that with longevity comes the fast decline of human health remained. That’s reflected in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-if-we-all-lived-beyond-130-years\u002F\">the general view of societies about aging\u003C\u002Fa> as well as the wishes of how long humans want to stick around. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pewforum.org\u002F2013\u002F08\u002F06\u002Fliving-to-120-and-beyond-americans-views-on-aging-medical-advances-and-radical-life-extension\u002F\">According to a 2013 survey by the Pew Research Center\u003C\u002Fa>, most Americans don’t want to live much longer than the current life expectancy – 78 years. Thirty-two percent want to survive until their 80s. Inevitable changes in the operation of the\nhuman body occur with age – that’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcan-money-buy-you-longevity-and-health\u002F\">what longevity research wants to reverse\u003C\u002Fa> -; \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.webmd.com\u002Fhealthy-aging\u002Fguide\u002Fnormal-aging#3\">for example\u003C\u002Fa>, blood vessels and arteries become stiffer so the heart\nhas to work harder to pump blood. This can lead to heart problems and high\nblood pressure. People at an older age find it harder to see and hear, the skin\ngets all wrinkled and dry. The bones become more brittle, and there’s a sudden\nurge to go to the bathroom more often than before. Everything from cognitive\nabilities to sex life transforms to some point. And we haven’t even said\nanything about diseases yet.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Considering all the difficulties of aging, you would believe that people are generally gung ho about innovations, technologies, treatments, and solutions in medicines that would slow the aging process or keep up a high quality of life. However, as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pewforum.org\u002F2013\u002F08\u002F06\u002Fliving-to-120-and-beyond-americans-views-on-aging-medical-advances-and-radical-life-extension\u002F\">the survey by Pew Research Center\u003C\u002Fa> shows that’s not the case\u003C\u002Fstrong>. A slight majority &#8211; 51 to 41 percent of Americans &#8211; said that “if new medical treatments slowed the aging process and allow the average person to live decades longer, to at least 120 years old,” this would be “a bad thing for society.” Sixty-eight percent think that “most people would want these medical treatments,” but 56 percent, when asked whether “you, personally, would want” such treatments, said they wouldn’t.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>We believe that one of the reasons for such pessimism is the lack of knowledge about the potential new treatments, cures or technological innovation that are gonna slow aging and raise the quality of life, while another reason is the misbelief that life could be other than miserable after 90\u003C\u002Fstrong>.
