You might have encountered such sentiments on social media, but people living a century before also experienced similar resistance to vaccines during the smallpox vaccination effort. Such objection in 1920 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcrosscut.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fseattle-always-had-anti-vaxxers-even-during-smallpox\" target=\"_blank\">prompted Seattle’s commissioner of public health\u003C\u002Fa> to call the city “\u003Cem>a hotbed for anti-vaccination, Christian Science, and various anti-medical cults, and it is difficult to enforce vaccination\u003C\u002Fem>.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even in times of a pandemic, anti-vaxxers’ activism does not falter. According to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.kff.org\u002Fcoronavirus-covid-19\u002Freport\u002Fkff-covid-19-vaccine-monitor-december-2020\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a December survey by Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF)\u003C\u002Fa>, 27% of Americans say they probably or definitely would not get a COVID-19 vaccine; even if it were free and deemed safe by scientists. This trend can prove devastating if we consider the impact of similar resistance in recent years. For example, measles led to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41563-020-0626-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">some 140,000 worldwide deaths\u003C\u002Fa> in 2018, while Q1 2019 saw \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews\u002Fitem\u002F15-05-2019-new-measles-surveillance-data-for-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a 300% rise\u003C\u002Fa> in measles cases compared to the same period a year before. Among the reasons, the WHO \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews-room\u002Fspotlight\u002Ften-threats-to-global-health-in-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cites vaccine hesitancy\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And that was about a disease that we’ve had an effective vaccine for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41563-020-0626-7\" target=\"_blank\">about 60 years\u003C\u002Fa>. For a virus as new as the novel coronavirus, skepticism is heightened. Some blame \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vox.com\u002Ffirst-person\u002F22256595\u002Fvaccine-covid-pakistan-cia-program\" target=\"_blank\">an apparent lack of data\u003C\u002Fa>, while others fall for conspiracy theories rampant on social media. Indeed, as we race to slow COVID-19’s spread and vaccinate as many people as possible, misinformation is spreading faster than those efforts. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For their part, social media platforms could restrict the reach of anti-vax messages, groups, and activities, with algorithms recommending tailor-made content and health apps providing information about vaccinations. Here’s our collection of the most recent steps and digital tools supporting the fight against anti-vaccination and its believers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Skepticism is as infectious as a disease\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although lack of access to vaccination and religious reasons add to the causes of vaccination hesitancy, the biggest problem has been lately the global spread of the anti-vaccination movement fuelled by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newsweek.com\u002Fevery-celebrity-speak-out-against-vaccines-1552427\" target=\"_blank\">various celebrities\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.politico.com\u002Fnews\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F21\u002Fanti-vaccine-coronavirus-137446\">politicians\u003C\u002Fa> and social media platforms \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2021\u002Fjan\u002F30\u002Ffacebook-letting-fake-news-spreaders-profit-investigators-claim\" target=\"_blank\">profiting from such viral content\u003C\u002Fa>. Facebook has been trying to tackle its anti-vaxxer problem for years, but just as we publish this article, the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F02\u002F08\u002Ftech\u002Ffacebook-covid-19-vaccine\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">social media giant\u003C\u002Fa> announced that it plans to remove posts with false vaccination claims globally. However, as of today, one can still browse Instagram freely for such damaging content.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the phenomenon of skepticism towards vaccination or medicine in general is not new, it’s recurring with a newly found resilience. Some are linking coincidental medical conditions, where the patient’s age or declining health are the real cause, to the COVID vaccine. “\u003Cem>They will sensationalise anything that happens after someone gets a vaccine and attribute it to the vaccine\u003C\u002Fem>,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F25\u002Fhealth\u002Fanti-vaccine-theories-undermine-vaccination\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">said Dr. Peter Hotez\u003C\u002Fa>, an infectious diseases specialist. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Others even take a more physical approach to express their distrust in vaccines. For example, in January, 50 anti-vaccine protesters in Los Angeles forced one of the U. S.’s largest vaccination sites to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fworld-us-canada-55875263\" target=\"_blank\">close for one hour\u003C\u002Fa>. While a certain level of skepticism is understandable when it comes to matters relating to one’s health, it becomes dangerous to err in the path of the anti-vaxxer; especially when \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-will-we-finally-end-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">independent regulatory authorities and peer-reviewed studies\u003C\u002Fa> deemed the vaccines in question to be safe. But fuelling the skepticism to extreme levels in the digital age are social media platforms. These act as the breeding ground for anti-vaccination movements.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cstrong>Access to the right information empowers – access to the wrong one can be lethal\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Largely responsible for the rise in anti-vaccination movements is the fast and easy spread of misinformation on new media platforms. Viral posts work just like political propaganda. The key is in the repetition of such messages. If you listen to a negative message several times over a longer period, it sticks with you and may influence your attitude; no matter what you rationally think.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A recent example is that of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.factcheck.org\u002F2020\u002F12\u002Fanti-vaccine-posts-use-deceptively-edited-video-clip\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">an edited video making rounds online\u003C\u002Fa> that showed a nurse “dropping dead” after getting her COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, the nurse simply fainted, but \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F25\u002Fhealth\u002Fanti-vaccine-theories-undermine-vaccination\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">social media users further fuelled the conspiracy\u003C\u002Fa> by posting a fake death certificate and obituary. Such posts are normalising and fuelling skepticism about vaccination. A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2021\u002Fjan\u002F30\u002Ffacebook-letting-fake-news-spreaders-profit-investigators-claim\" target=\"_blank\">recent investigation\u003C\u002Fa> by the London-based Bureau of Investigative Journalism found 430 Facebook pages, followed by 45 million users, that spread false information about COVID-19 or vaccinations while using Facebook’s tools such as virtual “shops” and fan subscriptions. Mark Zuckerberg’s company occasionally takes a cut when fans tip their content creators. Facebook also monetises the spread of such disinformation from the ads revenue generated as users engage on the platform and use its services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In an age when the problem is not the access to health information anymore but rather that most people have to face a data overflow, finding the right piece of knowledge will be the biggest challenge. The ‘right’ information will make you empowered, but fake information might get you into serious health trouble.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Social media to the rescue?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the wake of rising disinformation, the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.politico.com\u002Fnewsletters\u002Ffuture-pulse\u002F2020\u002F12\u002F23\u002Fa-dangerous-new-strain-of-anti-vaxxer-792472\" target=\"_blank\">American Medical Association recently warned\u003C\u002Fa> that these “\u003Cem>could derail this Herculean effort\u003C\u002Fem>” to immunise the population. This warning \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsearchlf.ama-assn.org\u002Fletter\u002FdocumentDownload?uri=%2Funstructured%2Fbinary%2Fletter%2FLETTERS%2FVaccine-Information-Accuracy-on-Technology-Platforms-12-21-20-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">was specifically addressed\u003C\u002Fa> to the CEOs of leading social media platforms. That’s why the appropriate assessment of online information and the role of social media giants in restricting space for the spread of such messages are becoming crucial in clamping down anti-vaxxers. The former necessitates the education of internet users about how to evaluate online medical information; we even \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-to-evaluate-medical-apps-health-technologies-and-websites\" target=\"_blank\">have a guide about it\u003C\u002Fa>. As for the second part, it requires a systemic response from such companies as Facebook, YouTube or Amazon.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Social media companies like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube did \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vox.com\u002Frecode\u002F22179145\u002Ftwitter-misinformation-covid-19-vaccines-pfizer-moderna\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tighten their policies\u003C\u002Fa> against coronavirus misinformation on their platforms; with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vox.com\u002Frecode\u002F22188680\u002Ffacebook-twitter-youtube-misinformation-anti-vaccine-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">millions of posts\u003C\u002Fa> taken down and even more tagged with fact-checking labels. But they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vox.com\u002Frecode\u002F22188680\u002Ffacebook-twitter-youtube-misinformation-anti-vaccine-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">don’t always\u003C\u002Fa> find and remove them all. They should also push for even better visibility of ‘vaccination advocates’ or influencers at the expense of accounts spreading misinformation. As the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews-room\u002Fspotlight\u002Ften-threats-to-global-health-in-2019\" target=\"_blank\">WHO says\u003C\u002Fa>, health workers, especially those embedded in communities, remain the most trusted advisors and influencers of vaccination decisions. As such, they must be supported to provide trusted, credible information on vaccines. The American Medical Association \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsearchlf.ama-assn.org\u002Fletter\u002FdocumentDownload?uri=%2Funstructured%2Fbinary%2Fletter%2FLETTERS%2FVaccine-Information-Accuracy-on-Technology-Platforms-12-21-20-FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">also echoed a similar message\u003C\u002Fa>. They called for social media companies to “\u003Cem>share timely, transparent and accurate information about COVID-19 vaccines from public health institutions like the FDA and CDC that are rooted in science and evidence\u003C\u002Fem>.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This could only happen with knowledge bases like Google, Facebook, or YouTube pushing back online anti-vaccination propaganda with efficient measures. Thus, we expect them to step up their game even more in the coming months.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Algorithms, VR and innovation against anti-vaxxers\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>How can digital health tools outside the realm of communication and social media platforms help? Well, there are quite a few ways to bring health technology into the fight against anti-vaxxers; but we have a couple of ideas for the developers too.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vaccinestoday.eu\u002Fstories\u002Fcan-mobile-phone-messages-boost-vaccination\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sophisticated algorithms\u003C\u002Fa> could play a role in addressing vaccine hesitancy. Just as Amazon and Netflix are adept at suggesting products and movies that ‘people like you’ might enjoy, health systems could build individually tailored messages most likely to resonate with individuals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Artificial intelligence could also bring a helping hand in determining vaccine side effects from those who have already received their jab. This is what A.I. company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffortune.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F06\u002Fcovid-vaccine-rollout-distribution-vaccination-coronavirus-ai-blockchain\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Genpact is doing in the U.K.\u003C\u002Fa> Their machine learning algorithm screens patient reports for patterns that could show signs of a possible issue. This can subsequently allow healthcare authorities to further investigate the case. This could help clear any false claims while also raising awareness of the actual side effects that one could experience.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Alternatively, innovative solutions \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vaccinestoday.eu\u002Fstories\u002Fadult-vaccination-can-technology-help-improve-access-and-uptake\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">could provide new opportunities to inform those at risk\u003C\u002Fa> that they should be vaccinated. Others are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcrowdsourcing-in-digital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">crowdsourcing data\u003C\u002Fa> to build reliable online resources to help those eligible find a vaccination centre.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other innovations might mitigate the discomfort that children feel when getting vaccinated. In \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fcontent\u002Fpilot-study-shows-vr-goggles-reduce-fear-pain-children-during-vaccination\" target=\"_blank\">a pilot study involving 244 children\u003C\u002Fa>, about half were given virtual reality headsets to view calming scenes while getting their flu shot. Children in the VR group were reported to have felt less pain and fear than those without such a headset. This rumour came to life because Wuhan has China’s only Level-4 bio-laboratories, where researchers have been studying coronaviruses for a long time, along with lots of other more nasty viruses; and also, because Donald Trump himself \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fworld-us-canada-52496098\" target=\"_blank\">believes and spreads this theory\u003C\u002Fa>. There are maps that show how close the laboratory is to the Wuhan wet market, the suspected epicentre of the outbreak. Since the human brain is naturally wired to look for patterns, people can see this proximity as finding a missing piece of the puzzle.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A Level-4 bio-laboratory has \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>the highest level of bio-containment precautions\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> to isolate dangerous biological agents. This is a universal standard set by the CDC. There IS no Level-5. This is as good as it gets. Therefore, chances of viruses escaping a Level-4 environment are extremely low. But with most conspiracy theories, facts won’t disturb people who want to believe in them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The idea that the new coronavirus is originated from the Wuhan lab came from a documentary produced by the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FThe_Epoch_Times\" target=\"_blank\">Epoch Times\u003C\u002Fa>, an English-language news outlet with links to a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cbc.ca\u002Fnews\u002Fcanada\u002Fepoch-times-coronavirus-bioweapon-1.5548217\" target=\"_blank\">Chinese religious cult\u003C\u002Fa> that has long been persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In their documentary, they insisted on calling COVID-19 as “\u003Cem>the CCP-virus\u003C\u002Fem>.” And since this notion went mainstream, it has even been used by the Trump \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F30\u002Fcoronavirus-trump-suspects-covid-19-came-from-china-lab.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">administration\u003C\u002Fa> to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?time_continue=1&v=ytGIkcCh7T8&feature=emb_title\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cast blame on the Chinese\u003C\u002Fa>, pushing the two countries’ relationship to an all-time low. Only one more step from here and many people started to believe that the virus was actually engineered by Chinese scientists as a biological weapon. There was no end to it from this point: news, blogs, social media sites were flooded with this misinformation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It seems it’s harder to accept that a global catastrophe like this pandemic could happen as easily and coincidentally as it did. But as Neil deGrasse Tyson said\u003Cem>,\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong> \u003Cem>“The good thing about science is that it’s true \u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cbr>   \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>whether or not you believe in it.\u003C\u002Fem>“\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Science clearly proved that COVID-19 is a zoonotic virus\u003C\u002Fem>, meaning it has spread to people from an animal. As much as Americans believe that the virus came from the Wuhan lab, a lot of people in China believe it was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.military.com\u002Fdaily-news\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F12\u002Fchinese-official-says-us-army-may-have-brought-epidemic-wuhan.html\" target=\"_blank\">American military personnel\u003C\u002Fa> who had brought the virus to China during their participation in the 2019 Military World Games in Wuhan last October. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Just as Trump was pushing the name “China virus”, there was an accompanying attempt in China to rename COVID-19 the “USA virus”. This blame-shifting has not stopped since and we can only hope things will get better – at least after the November elections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>And now, let’s travel from the land of plausible lies to straight up crazytown.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-group\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CONSPIRACY THEORY: 5G networks are accelerating the spread of coronavirus\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">FACT: No, they aren’t\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp class=\"has-normal-font-size\">One of the biggest new conspiracy theories is that \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F4\u002F4\u002F21207927\u002F5g-towers-burning-uk-coronavirus-conspiracy-theory-link\" target=\"_blank\">5G networks spread\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong> the virus. This theory clearly shows that no PhD is required to create a Twitter account. It should be needless to say that it is biologically impossible for viruses to spread using the electromagnetic spectrum. The latter are waves or photons, while the former are biological particles composed of proteins and nucleic acids. Add suspicion – like the notion that there is a hidden agenda behind the rapid rollout of 5G networks. Mix it up, and pour it over something that already preys on our mind – like the fear of COVID-19. \u003Cbr>\u003Cbr>In this case, it was a guy named \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-52198946\" target=\"_blank\">David Icke\u003C\u002Fa>, who believes 5G is a global conspiracy to cull the population. His followers claim he is a world renowned scientist, being \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-52198946\" target=\"_blank\">hunted\u003C\u002Fa> by the medical industry for saying the truth. In reality, he’s a former \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.goal.com\u002Fen\u002Fnews\u002Fwhich-football-team-did-david-icke-play-for-infamous\u002F114awztpiaydr1i40y8z0kabep\" target=\"_blank\">football player\u003C\u002Fa>, a BBC sports presenter – and someone \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newstatesman.com\u002Flifestyle\u002F2014\u002F11\u002Fpsycho-lizards-saturn-godlike-genius-david-icke\" target=\"_blank\">who believes\u003C\u002Fa> the Earth is run by shape-shifting reptilian humanoids. He also happens to publish \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.amazon.com\u002FBooks-David-Icke\u002Fs?rh=n%3A283155%2Cp_27%3ADavid+Icke\" target=\"_blank\">twenty books\u003C\u002Fa> about the most asinine conspiracy theories you can find out there. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And if anyone still believes that it’s 5G towers that spread the virus, ask yourself this: how come that 5G networks are only deployed in 34 countries, while COVID 19 is present in 212 countries at the moment?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-group\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CONSPIRACY THEORY: COVID-19 was unleashed by Bill Gates\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">FACT: No, it wasn’t\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Billionaires are elusive figures. Some of them are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbusiness-45560987\" target=\"_blank\">detached from the rest\u003C\u002Fa> of us. They are also perfect to be cast as villains. So when the video of Bill Gates resurfaced from 2015 where he warns of a pandemic, some people clearly didn’t understand what the founder of a computer company has to do with epidemiology. Unfortunately, that confusion led to theories, and those theories quickly got out of control. In an interview with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statnews.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F10\u002Fbill-gates-president-trump-pandemic-preparedness-investment\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Stat\u003C\u002Fa> in 2018, he mentioned that he urged Donald Trump to invest in pandemic preparedness. (The President didn’t listen.) This year the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.gatesfoundation.org\u002FMedia-Center\u002FPress-Releases\u002F2020\u002F02\u002FBill-and-Melinda-Gates-Foundation-Dedicates-Additional-Funding-to-the-Novel-Coronavirus-Response\" target=\"_blank\">Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation\u003C\u002Fa> has pledged up to $100 million to improve detection, isolation and treatment efforts; protect at-risk populations in Africa and South Asia; and accelerate the development of vaccines, drugs and diagnostics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Gates spent much of the second act of his career initiating and supporting efforts to prevent and control infectious diseases. His knowledge on viruses is on par with the world’s best epidemiologists. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As this COVID-19 conspiracy theory goes, Gates owns the “patent” for the new coronavirus that wasn’t even discovered until January 2020, and he has shares in companies that are currently working around the clock to come up with a vaccine. The latter part is actually true. \u003Cstrong>Gates did help fund many potential coronavirus vaccines\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Most everybody’s going to need it sooner or later, so that must be paid by someone. Truth is, the search for and the development of a new vaccine is  a highly risky philanthropic endeavour. In other words: it is extremely expensive, time-consuming and risky.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During the SARS epidemic, a team of Texas scientists started developing a promising vaccine against the virus. Years of effort and millions of dollars spent, they finally came close to having a vaccine. But by the time they had it, the SARS was gone and no-one was interested in their findings anymore. At the time there was no reason to continue the research, so the money and the effort was wasted. (Another thing is if they had continued, by now we’d be closer to a vaccine today.)\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In an \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheintercept.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F27\u002Fus-government-vaccines-big-pharma\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">article\u003C\u002Fa> for The Atlantic, Rachel M. People can come up with an infinite number of intriguing narratives. Now, when trust in governments and the media is at an all-time low, there are plenty of conspiracy theorists who’d want to rise and push their own agenda for the susceptible population. And the only thing science can’t do is to fight fire with fire. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When someone claims that the virus was bioengineered, scientists are obliged to say stuff like “\u003Cem>we didn’t find evidence\u003C\u002Fem>” or the “\u003Cem>weight of evidence indicates\u003C\u002Fem>”, even though it’s a near 100 percent certainty. But that’s how science works. It’s subtle. It’s cautious. It’s soft speaking. And that’s its handicap too. But don’t forget:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\u003Cp>\u003Cem>“when you have two competing theories that make exactly the same predictions, the simpler one is usually the one that is true.” \u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ccite>William Ockham\u003C\u002Fcite>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In this case, COVID 19 is exactly what it looks like. An unfortunate, but statistically inevitable event that experts have been warning us for decades and for which our actions are long overdue. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If there’s anything this pandemic should teach us, is that our faith should always be in science, because \u003Cstrong>that’s the only thing that doesn’t have an agenda\u003C\u002Fstrong>, and actually is able to lead us out of a crisis.
