In the digital health age, their tasks have evolved to work with electronic health records (EHRs) and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsunoh.ai\u002Fblog\u002Fvirtual-medical-scribes-in-healthcare-the-rise-of-ai\u002F\">even remotely\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More recently, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmedical-ai-scribes-in-2025-the-top-3-practical-benefits\">AI scribes\u003C\u002Fa> have indicated the next stage in the evolution of medical scribes. These software rely on speech recognition and large language models to automate, in real-time, clinical documentation during doctor-patient encounters.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such tools \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmedical-ai-scribes-in-2025-the-top-3-practical-benefits\">have the potential\u003C\u002Fa> to support administrative tasks and recent reports even indicate that medical AI scribes are helping clinicians \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Fai-and-machine-learning\u002Fprimary-care-doctors-say-ai-saves-time-and-helps-them-provide-better-care\">save time\u003C\u002Fa>. It got us to wonder how much time these tools can actually help save. The answer is more nuanced, and we unpack it in this article.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How can medical AI scribes save time?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On average, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F31931523\u002F\">clinicians take 16 minutes\u003C\u002Fa> to document each patient encounter on electronic health records. In some cases, this can even amount to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\">at least two hours\u003C\u002Fa> of typing for a full clinical day. With such time-consuming, repetitive tasks, automation can be a saving grace, especially considering that operating EHRs is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhbr.org\u002F2018\u002F03\u002Fto-combat-physician-burnout-and-improve-care-fix-the-electronic-health-record\">among the major contributors\u003C\u002Fa> to clinician burnout.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With medical AI scribes, there are \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdorascribe.ai\u002Fdo-ai-scribes-save-time\u002F\">some common practical ways\u003C\u002Fa> that clinics can save time. This is usually during the post-visit period, where physicians would typically need to document the patient encounter. With an AI-generated draft ready for their review, they have less time to spend writing an initial draft by recalling specific details. Clinics that already employ scribes can enhance their work by collaborating with AI. As human scribes \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2025\u002F01\u002Ffrom-paper-charts-to-ai-scribes-the-ehr-revolution\u002F\">have better context\u003C\u002Fa> than AI scribes, they can provide more accurate edits. After all, even if an AI tool can generate a fast draft, the time it saves \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdorascribe.ai\u002Fdo-ai-scribes-save-time\u002F\">might be nullified\u003C\u002Fa> if significant editing is required in order to finalise the documentation process.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Can medical AI scribes actually save time?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the convenience that medical AI scribes promise, healthcare institutions are \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statnews.com\u002F2025\u002F12\u002F03\u002Fai-scribe-time-savings-study-clinician-happiness\u002F\">increasingly considering\u003C\u002Fa> their integration. This has also prompted researchers to investigate the actual benefits of such tools. Recent studies from the US \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uchicagomedicine.org\u002Fforefront\u002Fresearch-and-discoveries-articles\u002Fambient-ai-saves-time-reduces-burnout-fosters-patient-connection\">have indicated\u003C\u002Fa> that by having AI scribes handle documentations, physicians report less burnout, and their time spent on EHRs and documentation has been cut. It analysed over 375,000 medical notes created using Tandem Health&#8217;s AI Scribe by 1,295 clinicians. With the technology, they spent 29% less time on medical notes, which equates to a reduction from 6.69 minutes to 4.71 minutes per note.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To wrap our heads around the numbers, here’s a quick summary of the research findings:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>US studies: 8.5% less total time in the EHR and spent 15% less time composing notes, or about 2-3 minutes saved per patient.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>European study: 29% less time on medical notes, or about 2 minutes saved per note.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nordic study also highlighted notable benefits beyond time efficiency. They found that clinicians using the medical AI scribe felt more present during consultations, were less stressed from administrative tasks, and 80% underscored that the tool improved their profession. This has some parallels with US-focused\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Fai-and-machine-learning\u002Fprimary-care-doctors-say-ai-saves-time-and-helps-them-provide-better-care\"> studies\u003C\u002Fa>, which found medical AI scribe users to be less stressed, experience less burnout and feel more content with their work.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The nuances of automated time-saving\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on such findings, medical AI scribes can indeed, technically speaking, save time for clinicians. The savings might be a handful of minutes per consultation, but this can add up to hours per week. However, there are more nuances to these results.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In another recent US-based study \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41746-025-01972-w#\">published in Nature\u003C\u002Fa>, researchers highlighted that while medical AI scribes can reduce documentation turnaround time, they can induce new time burdens. These include increasing the number of required steps in reviewing documentation and associated phone calls. Other studies \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Fai-and-machine-learning\u002Fprimary-care-doctors-say-ai-saves-time-and-helps-them-provide-better-care\">have identified\u003C\u002Fa> that these tools can improve clinician wellbeing but not necessarily save their time; or that, despite positive, subjective impressions of AI scribes, actual measured time savings were \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ajmc.com\u002Fview\u002Fsubjective-and-objective-impacts-of-ambulatory-ai-scribes\">relatively modest\u003C\u002Fa> on average.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, retention in use might be a challenge. The Permanente Medical Group \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcatalyst.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FCAT.25.0040\">shared insights\u003C\u002Fa> on the implementation of AI scribes after one year and over 2.5 million uses. Out of the 10,000 physicians using the technology, 73% used it at least once, but only 34% employed it in at least 100 patient encounters. This might indicate the relative infancy of the technology’s implementation, and more research (and time) might be required to have definitive answers. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Researchers are also \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Farticles\u002FPMC12460601\u002F\">pointing to the risk\u003C\u002Fa> of adoption rates outpacing validation and oversight. This harkens back to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ft.com\u002Fcontent\u002F5c356658-6db4-47c1-940b-b2e3cf3a51f3\">reports suggesting\u003C\u002Fa> that about 90% of notes generated by Nuance’s AI scribe during trials at Stanford Medical School had to be manually edited for inaccuracies. Others \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fpdf\u002F2402.08021\">have found\u003C\u002Fa> that some AI transcriptions can even include harmful hallucinations or made-up content.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Farticles\u002FPMC12460601\u002F\">represent real risks\u003C\u002Fa> that can compromise patient safety and clinical rigour in the rush to deploy AI scribes.
