We analyse plenty of sensors, trackers, wearables, patches, apps or genetic tests – anything that has a link to digital health. Sometimes a technological solution is simply so forward-looking and seamless that we cannot help but write about it in superlatives. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That’s what happened to BioBeat and its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fa-24-hour-skin-patch-that-monitors-blood-pressure-the-biobeat-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">24-hour blood pressure monitoring skin patch\u003C\u002Fa>: having a comfortable and reliable way for prolonged blood pressure monitoring is something we’ve been long waiting for. I could also mention the 3×4 genetics test – this was far from being my first DNA test, but pathway analysis offered interesting and actionable insights – coupled with great counseling – instead of the usual, percentage-based results.  And of course I could mention \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fan-ophthalmologist-in-your-kitchen-the-eyeque-insight-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">devices like EyeQue\u003C\u002Fa> – which are great for offering simple, affordable solutions that can be \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=RjRd2HM4NBI\" target=\"_blank\">easily implemented\u003C\u002Fa> even in remote areas and\u002For underserved communities.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When The Medical Futurist reviews technologies, the team takes its time. We derive our opinions from our own experiences, sometimes testing the device for weeks. Other times, we get in touch with enterprises or start-ups when we read about something exciting. It works both ways.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At The Medical Futurist, our integrity is paramount. \u003Cstrong>We never accept sponsorships or payments for our reviews\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The companies see the reviews and videos when our followers do. Every test and review we conduct is free of charge, with the singular exception being that we may receive the device under scrutiny at no cost. We are always prepared to return these after our evaluation. And lastly, sending us a device doesn’t guarantee a review. If we believe a product is poorly designed, unhelpful, or just plain silly, we won’t test it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Health tech influencers without being influenced\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When a company or start-up undertakes to be reviewed by The Medical Futurist, they have absolutely no idea how the team will assess the gadget or the test. They have no access to the testing process or the review before publishing. First of all, we look at the appearance, the design – the outside. As some members of the team do not have clinical experience but are curious, tech-savvy laypeople, patient-friendliness is one of the most important factors when reviewing a product. And that’s something you can already discern when you look at or touch a device or an app.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Secondly, The Medical Futurist carefully assesses the essential features of the given product – and compares it to what it promises in its manual or on the company’s website. Unfortunately, we do not have the means to perform clinical validations and so, for example, we cannot assess if the measurements of an ECG device are indeed valid, we can only compare the values of two similar health tech gadgets. However, we have to stress that The Medical Futurist has already been testing digital health devices for over a decade, so we have plenty of experience and a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-best-practices-policy-makers-free-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">solid basis\u003C\u002Fa> for making comparisons. We usually have recommendations for further development and aim for giving constructive feedback for every product we test.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And in most cases, we also prepare a pros\u002Fcons list, so we could make it crystal-clear to anyone what we did and didn’t like about a certain product. It’s simple, don’t you think?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What to expect from a review?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you are a representative of a health technology company, and you are considering whether or not to dispatch your product for testing by The Medical Futurist, I can tell you in four words what you can expect from a review and a bit more words about what you cannot, so you can decide easier.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Our reviews are \u003Cstrong>objective, independent, honest and unvarnished\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, we \u003Cstrong>cannot compare devices, gadgets or apps to any other products in clinical terms\u003C\u002Fstrong>, as we do not have the necessary equipment and environment for it. We \u003Cstrong>cannot analyse the security and safety of any product,\u003C\u002Fstrong> as again, we do not have the tools and conditions for it. Moreover, we \u003Cstrong>cannot assess the efficiency or working method of an algorithm or microchip\u003C\u002Fstrong>. That’s not what we aim for.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Medical Futurist aims the evaluation and assessment of the user experience and the practicality from a digital health perspective. And by far the most problematic of all these has been the FreeStyle Libre wireless wearable glucose sensor review. Don’t misunderstand me, the technology is brilliant, the sensor works flawlessly, but boy, regulatory hurdles were making it the toughest challenge. Making it work in a country that obviously isn’t a primary target market for the company producing the sensor was a nightmare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These days such devices arrive without a dedicated reader. Logical, our phones can do everything the reader could, so why bother with a separate device? All you need is an app. And here is where my troubles started.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Unfortunately, for regulatory purposes, the app is not available in my country, Hungary, and even though I know the company’s C-suit, and reached out for the sake of the test, they couldn’t help me overcome this problem. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, the diabetic community is one of the most clever and creative groups as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fliving-with-an-artificial-pancreas\u002F\">they had to circumnavigate regulatory nightmares for a decade\u003C\u002Fa>, so I received a few tips and tricks on how to hack the system. But it’s sort of insane that you have to become an IT guru or a hacker just to have access to a lifesaving technology like this. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I mean here’s a breakthrough consumer technology and just look\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fnskezikonyv.atwebpages.com\u002Fnightscout-telepitese\u002F\"> at the walkthrough\u003C\u002Fa> of what you have to do to be able to benefit from it in your disease management. The linked tutorial is in Hungarian, but you don’t need to speak the language to understand how complicated the process is. Setting up a sensor is very straightforward: you just clean\u002Fdisinfect\u002Fdry your upper arm, click on the sensor applicator to the sensor, place it on your upper arm, push the button, and that’s it. Here is an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoutu.be\u002FqzM_sFnwgEc?t=28\">introductory video\u003C\u002Fa>, and I can confirm, it is as simple as that.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How does it feel?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It required some getting used to, I had a slight discomfort during the first day, which was gone soon. From then on I was able to completely forget about it and could sleep on it, I could exercise, and take showers\u002Fbaths without any problems. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How does it work?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once it’s in place, everything goes smoothly. The device alerts you if your blood sugar level is high. It allowed me to check my blood glucose levels however often I fancied, all I needed to do was to press the button (there is only one) on the reader, bring it close to the sensor and I had the reading in about 3 seconds. It worked through layers of clothing, I didn’t need to take off my jumpers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How do you get the results?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After the two-week testing period I connected the reader to my PC, data got downloaded in a second and I was provided with a summary in two files, a pdf and an excel sheet. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What have I learned from this test?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is a brilliant technology for diabetes management, which is obviously the primary use case.
