There are many similarities between the current outbreak to the SARS one from its geolocation to its spread to the viruses themselves.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, much has changed within the 17-year gap between those two outbreaks. For one, technology in the healthcare sector has known an exponential boom. Even though China seems to have \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2020-01-24\u002Fchina-doing-good-job-in-combating-virus-german-minister-says\" target=\"_blank\">become more transparent\u003C\u002Fa> in those matters, some might still \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F1789867\u002Fcensorship-shackles-chinas-battle-against-wuhan-virus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">not be convinced\u003C\u002Fa>. To circumvent those trust issues, artificial intelligence can be a solution.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a matter of fact, Toronto-based health monitoring A.I. platform \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbluedot.global\u002F\">Bluedot\u003C\u002Fa> beat both the WHO and the CDC to the punch when \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fai-epidemiologist-wuhan-public-health-warnings\u002F\">issuing warnings\u003C\u002Fa> about the COVID-19’ spread. It even correctly predicted the virus’ likely path from Wuhan to Tokyo after its initial appearance. Bluedot \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.prnewswire.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Fdigital-health-company-bluedot-secures-7m-usd-series-a-financing-300894210.html\">calls itself\u003C\u002Fa> “a digital health company that uses big data analytics to track and anticipate the spread of the world&#8217;s most dangerous infectious diseases”. By going through piles of information about news reports, airline data, and reports of animal disease outbreaks, Bluedot’s algorithm can identify a trend which is then analyzed by epidemiologists. A.I. is also being used to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Ftechnology\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F21\u002Fai-could-combat-spread-chinas-deadly-coronavirus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">model Ebola outbreaks\u003C\u002Fa> using movement data.&nbsp; By having an A.I. sift through the available data and make informed predictions which are cross-checked by experts, relevant bodies can contain such diseases before they even leave their source of origin.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Interactive maps for monitoring\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University developed an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgisanddata.maps.arcgis.com\u002Fapps\u002Fopsdashboard\u002Findex.html#\u002Fbda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6\">online dashboard to visualize and track the reported cases on a daily timescale\u003C\u002Fa>. They also made the complete set of data downloadable as a Google Sheet. The map shows new cases, confirmed deaths and recoveries. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsystems.jhu.edu\u002Fresearch\u002Fpublic-health\u002Fncov\u002F\">The data they use to visualize this\u003C\u002Fa> is collected from various sources including WHO, CDC, China CDC, NHC and DXY, a Chinese website that aggregates NHC and local CCDC situation reports in near real-time, providing more current regional case estimates than the national level reporting organizations are capable of, and is thus used for all the mainland China cases reported in the dashboard. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Information on U.S. cases is taken from the U.S. CDC, and all other country case data is taken from the corresponding regional health departments. For the current coronavirus outbreak, the culprit was identified within a week from the public announcement and the first \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.japantimes.co.jp\u002Fnews\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F17\u002Fasia-pacific\u002Fscience-health-asia-pacific\u002Fgerman-researchers-develop-first-test-new-virus-china\u002F#.Xi8NOmgzZPY\" target=\"_blank\">diagnostic test\u003C\u002Fa> was developed shortly after that. “Back then, it took days to sequence,” Georgetown University infectious diseases physician \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.voanews.com\u002Fscience-health\u002Fnew-tech-sharp-docs-made-fast-id-wuhan-coronavirus-possible\" target=\"_blank\">Daniel Lucey\u003C\u002Fa>, who worked on SARS in 2003 said. “Now, it can take hours.” Thanks to technological progress, scientists don’t need to cultivate a sufficient amount of viruses before examining them anymore. Minute amounts of viral DNA can be detected directly from a patient’s spit or blood sample.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another company based in Singapore, Veredus Laboratories, is working on a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fasia-pacific\u002Fveredus-laboratories-announces-development-detection-kit-wuhan-coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">portable Lab-on-Chip detection kit\u003C\u002Fa> that is expected to be commercially available as soon as this February 1st. Since the first sequencing was done, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statnews.com\u002F2020\u002F01\u002F24\u002Fdna-sleuths-read-coronavirus-genome-tracing-origins-and-mutations\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">almost two dozen more\u003C\u002Fa> have been completed. In comparison, the SARS virus outbreak started around the end of 2002 and its complete genome was only available in April 2003. This is again thanks to advances in technology and a drive for international collaboration. With such an ambitious aim, the genome sequences will prove to be very valuable. The latter allows physicians to communicate with the patient via a screen and it is also equipped with a stethoscope, helping doctors take the man’s vitals while minimizing exposure to the staff. Experts\nsay efforts to contain the virus are hindered by biological, public health,\npolitical, and cultural issues, but we looked around what digital health\ntechnologies could do to mitigate the spread and the devastation of the\ninfectious disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The\nSpaghetti-like virus…\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The lethal Ebola virus first appeared in 1976 around a river in Congo – it was named after this watercourse – but its exact origins are still unclear. The tiny pathogen looks like a particular type of spaghetti under the microscope, but its behavior is merciless and bloody. \u003Cstrong>It \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fsitn.hms.harvard.edu\u002Fflash\u002F2014\u002Febola-virus-how-it-infects-people-and-how-scientists-are-working-to-cure-it\u002F\">works its ways into cells\u003C\u002Fa>, creates countless copies of itself, and destroys the connections between tissues, causing organ failure and leaky blood vessels, essentially dismantling bodies from the inside out. In its most extreme form, the viral hemorrhagic fever leads to uncontrollable bleeding and death.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals (such as fruit bats, porcupines, and non-human primates) and then spreads in the human population through direct contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected people, and with surfaces and materials (e.g. bedding, clothing) contaminated with these fluids. The largest Ebola epidemic to date rampaged through West Africa from 2014 to 2016, killing more than \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fvhf\u002Febola\u002Fhistory\u002F2014-2016-outbreak\u002Fcumulative-cases-graphs.html\">11,300 people\u003C\u002Fa>. It seemed that the virus was contained there but \u003Cstrong>a year ago it started to claim victims again in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The WHO classified the recent outbreak \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews-room\u002Fdetail\u002F17-07-2019-ebola-outbreak-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-declared-a-public-health-emergency-of-international-concern\">as a level 3 emergency\u003C\u002Fa>, the most serious, as it continues to cause casualties in the hundreds. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Unfortunately, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nationalgeographic.com\u002Fscience\u002F2019\u002F04\u002Fworlds-second-biggest-ebola-outbreak-still-raging-heres-why-hot-zone\u002F\">there are several factors\u003C\u002Fa> which hamper the fight in the current situation. The region is plagued by political conflicts and continuing violence. As distrust is deeply rooted, the locals are mistrustful towards foreign aid groups and medical teams, which makes the management or prevention of the disease very difficult\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Moreover, looking at the disease itself, the infection is spreading among an unusually high number of children and killing a large percentage of people before they’ve sought or received treatment in Ebola centers staffed by local and international aid workers. Now, teams trying to track the spread of the disease are finding fresh cases with no obvious connection to previous patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So\nfar, the most efficient solution seems to be \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2019\u002F07\u002F09\u002Fmercks-ebola-vaccine-helps-combat-deadly-outbreak-in-the-congo.html\">Merck’s\nexperimental rVSV-ZEBOV Ebola vaccine\u003C\u002Fa>, which is used for\nindividuals getting in contact with Ebola patients, as well as the contacts of\nthose contacts – to create a ring of immunization. So far, more than 135,000\npeople have received the vaccine in the current outbreak. However, the vaccine\nis only good for prevention and cannot be used for treating Ebola patients. So\nfar, only experimental treatments exist, while the only advice for doctors is\nto hydrate until the immune system fights off the disease. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Looking at the hardships that public health agencies as well as the local population face, we asked the question what digital health could do in this situation and whether it can offer some ways to alleviate the epidemic. REUTERS\u002FGoran Tomasevic\u002FFile Photo\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Monitoring\nthe Ebola epidemic through digital maps in real-time\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Monitoring and surveillance are the areas where digital technologies truly excel, especially when it comes to epidemics. \u003Cstrong>Coordinated and flexible data systems, such as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-maps-help-fight-epidemics\">digital maps\u003C\u002Fa>, can identify health trends, predict medicine stockouts, or detect outbreaks far faster and more efficiently than any other systems.\u003C\u002Fstrong> For example, researchers, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nasa.gov\u002Ffeature\u002Fgoddard\u002F2017\u002Fusing-nasa-satellite-data-to-predict-malaria-outbreaks\">using\u003C\u002Fa> data from NASA satellites (such as the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.engadget.com\u002F2016\u002F06\u002F27\u002Fgoogle-earth-maps-higher-quality-imagery\u002F\">Landsat\u003C\u002Fa> series), were able to predict malaria outbreaks three months in advance in South America by identifying areas where the soil moisture creates prime breeding grounds for the mosquitoes that transmit malaria.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In\nthe DRC, the Ministry of Health partnered with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.path.org\u002Fabout\u002F\">a non-profit organization, PATH\u003C\u002Fa>,\nwhich aims to harness the power of data and digital tools, to collect and\nanalyze high-quality data about the Ebola epidemic leading to efficient,\ndata-based decisions. Using the existing National Health Information System, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.path.org\u002Farticles\u002Fdigitalizing-ebola-response\u002F\">PATH\ncreated a dashboard for monitoring Ebola cases\u003C\u002Fa>.\nUpdated daily, this dashboard provides real-time information on important\nindicators like the epidemic curve, case data, contact-tracing, treatment, and\ntimelines. \u003Cstrong>Not only PATH, but the US\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the WHO, and other partners\nworked together to create digital maps, graphs, and charts displaying different\naspects of the outbreak in real-time. All-day, data are a constant reminder of\nwhat has been accomplished and what still needs to be done. Moreover, Ebola\nexperts in Kinshasa, West Africa, and Atlanta can have direct access to the\ndata\u003C\u002Fstrong>, and more importantly, to the people at the center of the outbreak.\nAdvice, decisions, and problem-solving can happen in real-time. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In\nthe future, such a rich collection of data might be used for the creation of\nsmart algorithms generating more insights and predictions regarding the\ndisease, moreover, these analytical software programs could also be \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Feclinm\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS2589-5370(19)30096-3\u002Ffulltext\">built\ninto apps or guidelines such as the \u003Cem>Ebola Care Guidelines\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>.\n\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As the government of the DRC also recognized the power of data, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.path.org\u002Farticles\u002Fdigital-congo-ebola\u002F\">the Ministry of Health in March 2019 launched a national agency for clinical information and health informatics\u003C\u002Fa> (ANICiiS). With a mission to improve management of the health care system, quality of care, and accessibility of services, the ANICiiS is the country’s first dedicated digital health agency. It promises to oversee and accelerate the use of new technologies, including telemedicine, connectivity for the health information system, and biomedical equipment. To celebrate the launch of the new agency, the Ministry brought more than 50 students together for an Ebola-focused hackathon for improving the arsenal against Ebola. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fborgenproject.org\u002Fhow-sms-messaging-helped-to-combat-ebola-in-sierra-leone\u002F\">initiative\nwas widely hailed as an efficient tool\u003C\u002Fa> in combatting the\nepidemic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And finally, the use of social media has to be mentioned. Although internet penetration remains low in the DRC or West Africa, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.techchange.org\u002F2014\u002F10\u002F08\u002Febola-technology-ict\u002F\">experiences from Haiti and the Philippines show that diaspora is an important information channel for people living in affected countries\u003C\u002Fa>. Very often they assume that their relatives in the US or Europe will know more, and are more credible information sources than their own governments. It is the first-ever multi-drug trial to find a successful treatment for Ebola. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, we believe that in the future, \u003Cstrong>artificial intelligence could speed up drug creation and the clinical testing procedure through redesigning existing medicines or pairing unique ingredients virtually that were never tested before. For example, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.atomwise.com\u002F\">Atomwise\u003C\u002Fa> uses supercomputers that root out therapies from a database of molecular structures\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In 2015, Atomwise launched a virtual search for safe, existing medicines that could be redesigned to treat the Ebola virus. They found two drugs predicted by the company’s A.I. technology which may significantly reduce Ebola infectivity.
