Announcements and news amaze us &nbsp;every day, even if we grew up reading and watching science fiction. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Forganovo.com\u002Ftissues-services\u002Fexvive3d-human-tissue-models-services-research\u002Fexvive3d-liver-tissue-performance\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Companies have successfully printed out\u003C\u002Fa> liver and kidney tissues; customized prosthetics and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2015\u002F08\u002F04\u002Fthe-fda-just-approved-the-first-3d-printed-drug\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">even drugs\u003C\u002Fa> approved by the FDA. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2014\u002F11\u002F28\u002Fibm-watson-is-the-stethoscope-of-the-21st-century\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM Watson’s artificial intelligence\u003C\u002Fa> collects massive amounts of information and plans the best treatment option for patients by checking all relevant medical studies, and deep learning algorithms will do even more. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2015\u002F04\u002F23\u002Fwhat-comes-after-the-wearable-health-revolution\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital tattoos\u003C\u002Fa> can measure the major health parameters and vital signs to let us know when there’s something to take care of through our smartphones. Augmented reality devices such as \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2015\u002F07\u002F20\u002Fstudying-anatomy-via-augmented-reality\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hololens from Microsoft\u003C\u002Fa> can project digital scenes on what we see and prepare doctors for difficult procedures. And hype doesn&#8217;t help them become viable and sustainable. After a decade of blind expectations, The Wall Street Journal has raised serious concerns about \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2016\u002F02\u002F06\u002Fwhy-theranos-will-decide-the-future-of-medical-innovation\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Theranos’ one-drop blood tests\u003C\u002Fa>. Now we must wait for clear details of their technology. Optogenetics, using light to control cell behavior in living tissues still remains a promise for the far future. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F2016\u002F03\u002F21\u002Ftechnologies-that-will-shape-the-future-of-cancer-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">iKnife that can detect cancerous tissue\u003C\u002Fa> during operation seems to have vanished completely. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftag\u002Fwearable\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">swarm of wearable sensors\u003C\u002Fa> will never become affordable and comprehensive without us buying devices, measuring our health and pushing companies to develop ever more powerful technology. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftag\u002Fe-patient\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Patient empowerment\u003C\u002Fa> will never reach mainstream status without us demanding to be informed and engaged in our care. When the New York Times offered a free Google Cardboard to its edition in 2015, people started understanding and experiencing its power at home. But without such steps, technologies will not be able to enter the market in earnest. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fenablingthefuture.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">E-Nable\u003C\u002Fa> project brought together makers and experts to deliver very cheap, 3D printed prosthetics to regions where people cannot afford them. In 2013, there were \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.proteus.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rumors\u003C\u002Fa> about startups revolutionizing adherence control by inserting microchips into drug capsules to let physicians see if and when patients take them. We have been waiting for devices that allow holographic data input but only simplistic, toy-like gadgets have become available. Without large companies investing in them, they will have a long way to go before mainstream adoption. A great example is \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.loreal.com\u002Fmedia\u002Fpress-releases\u002F2016\u002Fjan\u002Floreal-debuts-first-ever-stretchable-electronic-uv-monitor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">L’Oréal\u003C\u002Fa>, the cosmetics company investing into a wearable sensor that lets the wearer know if their exposure to the Sun reaches dangerous levels.\u003C\u002Fspan> \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5) Research and data turns ideas into reality\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter\">\u003Ca class=\"img\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2016\u002F04\u002Forgan-chips.jpg\"\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2016\u002F04\u002Forgan-chips-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Organ-on-a-chip mimicks the human lung\" class=\"wp-image-13722\"\u002F>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear evidence has emerged for many of the trends and technological directions I featured in 2013. There is hope after all that a new healthcare system based on disruptive technologies but emphasizing the human touch will become a reality. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.oncompassmedicine.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oncompass\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.foundationmedicine.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Foundation Medicine\u003C\u002Fa> makes personalized treatment plans for cancer patients using the genetic background of their tumor after doing so for thousands of patients. Researchers at the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwyss.harvard.edu\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wyss Institute\u003C\u002Fa> work on organs-on-a-chips that mimic the physiology of human organs. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgetheal.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Heal smartphone app\u003C\u002Fa> in the US lets patients find physicians just like Uber connects drivers to passengers. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.trialreach.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">TrialReach\u003C\u002Fa> helps patients find open clinical trials in their medical condition. Accurately measuring data and the needs of patients\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> help identify those ideas with the biggest potential.\u003C\u002Fspan>  What happens next? It depends on all of us – patients, physicians, researchers and developers. We can’t wait for organizations and governments to realize the future of medicine without our active help.
