The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fnews-events\u002Fpress-announcements\u002Ffda-authorizes-first-over-counter-hearing-aid-software\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FDA even approved\u003C\u002Fa> the Apple AirPods Pro’s Hearing Aid Feature as the first over-the-counter hearing aid software device in 2024. Other companies are also investigating this approach and headphones could be on track to become the next smartwatch, or a so-called hearable.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As hearing loss affects \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.apple.com\u002Fnewsroom\u002F2024\u002F10\u002Fhow-apple-developed-the-worlds-first-end-to-end-hearing-health-experience\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">about 1.5 billion people globally\u003C\u002Fa>, these tech-driven solutions can expand access to personalised, high-quality hearing support. In this article, we consider the rising trend of headphones being adapted as health and medical devices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What makes headphones adequate digital health tools?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When thinking about headphones, their use as health devices is not what initially comes to mind. But given more thought, they are actually quite well suited for such purposes. \u003Cstrong>The anatomy of the auditory canal makes it a well suited location for health sensing with in-ear headphones like the AirPods.\u003C\u002Fstrong> It is located close to the brain, major blood vessels, and nerves, which enables physiological measurements to be made.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Its blood supply by the deep ear artery means that heart rate and blood pressure can be measured; and hearables \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fresearch.google\u002Fblog\u002Faudioplethysmography-for-cardiac-monitoring-with-hearable-devices\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have been used\u003C\u002Fa> for such measurements. This is because, with proper seal, the microphones within \u003Cstrong>headphones \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fresearch.google\u002Fblog\u002Faudioplethysmography-for-cardiac-monitoring-with-hearable-devices\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cstrong>can detect or record bio-signals\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> such as heart and respiratory rate\u003C\u002Fstrong>.&nbsp; Apple took a similar approach to the AirPods Pro 2 which obtained its health features via \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.apple.com\u002Fnewsroom\u002F2024\u002F10\u002Fhow-apple-developed-the-worlds-first-end-to-end-hearing-health-experience\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a free software update\u003C\u002Fa>, and other companies could follow suit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>From a social perspective, users might be better able to adopt headphones as health aids and monitors considering that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.headphonesty.com\u002F2024\u002F11\u002Fturning-headphones-health-devices-major-trend\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">we are already familiar\u003C\u002Fa> with these devices. \u003Cstrong>This can also address any potential stigmas or even cost issues with using traditional hearing aids\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In fact, companies are thinking of headphones as more than hearing aids but also for general health tracking to smartwatches. In the next section, we look at some of the examples.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>How headphones can be used as health and medical devices\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are several ways that companies are adapting headphones for healthcare uses. While this approach is relatively new, we can group the current examples into three general categories.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. General health tracking\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a consumer product, \u003Cstrong>headphones can be easily used for general health tracking akin to smartwatches\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In some cases, such as during exercise, headphones can even provide \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Farticles\u002FPMC10384007\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more accurate measurements\u003C\u002Fa> than smartwatches. Increasing accessibility\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Other companies are developing headphones to assist people in other ways as well. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.headphonesty.com\u002F2024\u002F08\u002Fneural-earbuds-paralyzed-users-telepathic-control-devices\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NAQI Neural earbuds\u003C\u002Fa> can allow users to control devices by registering movements of the head and facial muscles. \u003Cstrong>This can greatly improve the daily interactions of people with limited mobility.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some are pairing headphones with smart glasses to improve communication.
