If you responded to both questions with &#8220;hell yes!&#8221; (how else, really), then your place is in the venues hosting CES. Innovators and tech fanatics flock to Las Vegas every January to kick-off the year with the smartest cars, the fastest hard drives, the thinnest TVs and the weirdest gadgets in the most unexpected market niches. However, in the jungle of almost 4,000 exhibitors, more than 170,000 participants, there were some palpable trends regarding digital health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Digital health technology flooded CES 2018\u003C\u002Fstrong>. There were so many healthcare-related gadgets as never ever before, even if we look at last years’ digital health technologies at CES combined.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Giant tech companies want to jump on board the digital health train\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Samsung, Nokia, Apple, Philips, all these companies have rumored it for a while that they want to enter the health market; but at CES 2018, they actually brought forward their products related to health and well-being.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Niche products are much more common\u003C\u002Fstrong>. As the digital health and fitness\u002Fwellness market becomes satiated, start-ups and innovators turn to market niches, thus there are more and more fertility trackers, disease-specific sensors and wearables for one-off tasks.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Very few intrinsically disruptive innovations\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For me, disruptive means technologically relevant innovations serving a valid clinical or medical purpose in a niche market for a fair price.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Patients will be the point of care\u003C\u002Fstrong>. CES 2018 strengthened my expectation that medicine will get to the closest proximity of patients very soon. Healthcare gadgets, sensors, trackers for homes and cars outnumbered any other health technologies this year. The realization of the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnet.com\u002Fnews\u002Fomron-heartguide-blood-pressure-smartwatch-ces\u002F#ftag=CAD-09-10aai5b\">Omron Heartguide blood pressure smartwatch\u003C\u002Fa> would actually mean the end of the outdated blood pressure cuffs and traditional measurement. That would be huge!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although it’s still undergoing clinical tests and should be submitted to the FDA later this year, the Heartguide holds great promise. The extra-strong band of the smartwatch allows users to take a medical-grade measurement, which syncs with Omron’s phone app. It could also be programmed to take night readings to test for hypertension and risk of stroke while sleeping. What does solar energy have to do with education? A lot, actually. In developing regions, parents often send children to work at an early age instead of letting them go to school. That’s what the “Solar Cow Project” aims to change. Pupils can plug in their milk bottle-shaped portable batteries into the charging station, the “cow” when they arrive at school and bring home the recharged power banks. Electricity could be scarce in these regions of Africa, so parents who let their children to school save money and time: the cow is free to “milk”, and it could spare a 4-6-hour long walk to the nearest charging station. It claimed that it will be able to take medical-grade measurements and night readings to test for hypertension and to measure the risk of stroke while sleeping. As it comes from the largest manufacturer of blood pressure machines, we have no doubt that it works.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During 2018, the smartwatch went through clinical testing, and by the end of the year, the FDA gave it the green light.
