Now with Google buying Fitbit, \u003Cstrong>it’s the end of the food chain with Google sitting at the top\u003C\u002Fstrong>, making for an aptly named “wearable turducken,” as CNET’s\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fjetscott\u002Fstatus\u002F1190260630047141888?s=20\" target=\"_blank\"> Scott Stein puts it in a tweet\u003C\u002Fa>. The market share is now divided between Google, Apple and a few prominent Chinese companies like Xiaomi and Huawei.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>But what about Google itself in the fitness industry up to this point? Even if the company made some moves in this area, its efforts have been meagre at best\u003C\u002Fstrong>. With its competitors way ahead of itself in the wearable race (Apple Watch’s market share is around 51%), Google desperately needed a head start to keep up with this race.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Catching Up\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Enter Fitbit and its treasure chest filled with millions of active global users. With such a significant userbase cultivated over a decade, Google finally has the push it needed to keep up with the fitness industry race. \u003Cstrong>We even think that Fitbit is\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffitbit-ionic-review-bromance-pebble-smartwatch\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> one of the best\u003C\u002Fa> in this space\u003C\u002Fstrong> with great built-in functions like Coach and Relax, days of battery life and neat hardware design. \u003Cstrong>By using its prowess when it comes to software and combining its existing hardware endeavours with Fossil,\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Cstrong>Google can improve on what Fitbit already offers\u003C\u002Fstrong>. This somewhat aligns with Fitbit’s philosophy when considering what the company’s CEO James Park told\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5702746\u002Ffitbit-james-park-afib-time-100-summit\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> TIME in an October interview\u003C\u002Fa>: “The healthcare system is incredibly complex and it takes working with a lot of different big players to have a big impact. And, you know, our goal is to make this stuff that we’re working on available and accessible to as many people around the world as possible. Thanks to Android’s market share, Fitbit adopters might get an edge over Apple Watch users thanks to the possibility of a plethora of connected services, NFC payments and other upcoming features that the company can include with Google’s aid in software development. \u003Cstrong>Moreover, Google’s\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fverily.com\u002Fprojects\u002Fprecision-medicine\u002Fproject-baseline\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> Verily’s Project Baseline\u003C\u002Fa>, which has the goal of “bridging the gap between research and care”,\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Cstrong>needs reliable hardware and (a lot of) potential participants as soon as possible for its studies to gain steam and Fitbit provides just that\u003C\u002Fstrong>. There’s a lot in it for Google and its willingness to shed $2.1 billion on Fitbit is understandable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Finish Line\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The question that arises with such an acquisition is as follows: \u003Cstrong>what is a company that essentially survives on advertisement going to do with the newfound treasure trove that is the personal health data of millions of users collected over a decade?\u003C\u002Fstrong> Does this mean that you will see ads about the local yoga coach when your Fitbit detects that your stress level is higher than usual? We will never sell personal information to anyone. Fitbit health and wellness data will not be used for Google ads,” writes Rick Osterloh, Senior Vice President, Devices & Services at Google. However, Paul Bischoff, a privacy advocate with\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.comparitech.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> Comparitech\u003C\u002Fa>,\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2019\u002Fnov\u002F05\u002Ffitbit-google-acquisition-health-data\" target=\"_blank\"> tells The Guardian\u003C\u002Fa> that we should still be wary about this acquisition when it comes to user privacy because even if users’ data will not be used for advertising, “that leaves plenty of other information for Google to gather, including users’ locations, device info, friends’ lists, messages, profile photos, participation in employee wellness programs, and usage logs”. In spite of being in an initial phase, the study shows AR’s future promise in positively impacting lives of people with autism.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Gamified augmented reality against ADHD\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The preliminary study found that measures of hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsivity dropped by 56.4 percent in the patient group with high scores of ADHD, while by 66.3 percent in the group with low symptomatic signs 48 hours after the session with \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.brain-power.com\">Empowered Brain\u003C\u002Fa>. In the framework of the clinical trial, children, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder got the chance to try various educational, gamified modules for improving social skills and communication.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For autism patients, paying attention to social happenings could be burdening. As a response, the team of Empowered Brain developed the Face2Face module to help direct attention. Cartoon characters will sit on people’s heads and arrows will guide the eyes to the point where the focus should be placed at a particular moment. In another game called Emotion Charades developed in partnership with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.affectiva.com\u002F\">Affectiva\u003C\u002Fa>, an emotional artificial intelligence company, the users can identify emotions of other persons. None of the participants showed signs of distress when facing the new technology, which is particularly hopeful. The handheld scanner projects the veins of the patient over the skin via augmented reality showing nurses and doctors where the capillaries are.
