Just like in the case of (\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002F25\u002Fopinion\u002Fonline-college-coronavirus.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">especially higher\u003C\u002Fa>) education, people now start to realize how to leverage the tools that have already been there for a while. Once considered science fiction, remote care is today’s new standard. Let me show you how.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many good examples of remote care solutions. It can \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fremarkable-examples-of-telemedicine\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">connect patients and doctors\u003C\u002Fa> without the need to travel (did you know that in Alaska patient records \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsearchhealthit.techtarget.com\u002Ffeature\u002FTelehealth-program-key-to-quality-healthcare-in-Alaska\" target=\"_blank\">can only be transported on a sled\u003C\u002Fa> with a Husky team if the internet connection is down?!). It can offer remote counseling and health advice \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-telemedicine-solutions-bringing-patients-doctors-closer\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">in the form of an app\u003C\u002Fa>, even providing live, on-demand video visits or medical A.I. consultation. And it can cover night shifts for physicians and nurses by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-eicu-is-turning-night-into-day-with-telemedicine\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">delivering care from the other side of the Earth\u003C\u002Fa>. It did disrupt the systems, and forced health networks to rehash their telemedicine concepts. Not only that: in order to protect medical professionals from the virus, the need for remote technologies skyrocketed. If you needed to go to your physician over the past weeks, first you had to call in and describe your symptoms. Isn’t this the first step of remote care?But hospitals and even some governments went beyond that.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\">\u003Cimg decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedia-exp1.licdn.com\u002Fdms\u002Fimage\u002FC5622AQEfR5YOIiMP6A\u002Ffeedshare-shrink_2048_1536\u002F0?e=1593648000&amp;v=beta&amp;t=x0zYjtawjp0jCzW3ewCXm7DuCBjT9rpvSF-elgqQ_Hw\" alt=\"\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: publichealth.jmir.org\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Take the case of Catalonia. The Spanish region of 7.5M inhabitants has always been one of the frontrunners of digital health technologies. Health information was handled electronically already in the 1990s! They integrated personal glucose meters and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.linkedin.com\u002Fpulse\u002Fcatalonia-advancing-open-standards-personal-health-devices-str%C3%BCbin\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">data from mobile apps and devices\u003C\u002Fa> into their Digital Health Platform years ago. And although Spain was one of the countries which were hit hardest by the COVID-19, Catalonia was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpublichealth.jmir.org\u002F2020\u002F2\u002Fe19106\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">quick to turn to digital health technologies\u003C\u002Fa> facing the pandemic.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>“You can’t stop the change, any more than you can stop the suns from setting”\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is important to note that facing COVID-19, the reason why Catalonia could act fast was not only because they were ready technologically. They were ready due to their medical education. Because the entire digital health reform is \u003Cstrong>not a matter of technology\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003Cstrong>It is a \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cstrong>cultural transformation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong>.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Contrary to popular belief, disruptive technologies cannot bring \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-manifesto\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">change on their own\u003C\u002Fa>. These need changes in the system as well as in stakeholders’ attitude.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than 5 million physicians are currently missing from healthcare systems, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fbulletin\u002Fvolumes\u002F86\u002F7\u002F07-046474\u002Fen\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">says the WHO\u003C\u002Fa>. And you don’t need to be a futurist to tell that there will be a surge in these numbers, not necessarily because there will be more sick people but because more and more people will gain access to healthcare whatsoever. There is no way to avoid the rise of telemedicine. And Rise It Does.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The Rise Of Digital Technologies after COVID-19\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Cblockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\u003Cp lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">A health system just sent me their 2019 versus 2020 numbers for virtual visits. The difference was so stark I thought it was a typo.\u003C\u002Fp>&mdash; Christina Farr (@chrissyfarr) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fchrissyfarr\u002Fstatus\u002F1262851123234222080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 19, 2020\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003Cscript async src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fplatform.twitter.com\u002Fwidgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\">\u003C\u002Fscript>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: Twitter\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Well-known health correspondent Christina Farr first thought it was a typo when she saw how the virtual visit numbers of a telehealth company rose between 2019 and 2020. And indeed, there has been a gigantic surge in the use of telemedicine, in particular virtual visits in the US. Over the past 3 months, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthpopuli.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002F22\u002Ftrust-my-doctor-fear-the-office-and-losing-health-insurance-in-the-covid-19-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">telehealth usage has tripled\u003C\u002Fa>, mainly because people were simply afraid to go to the doctor. For example \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.teladoc.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Teladoc\u003C\u002Fa>, a company that offers medical visits online and over the phone experienced a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthleadersmedia.com\u002Ffinance\u002Fteladoc-health-visits-jump-92-q1-revenue-tops-180m\" target=\"_blank\">surge of 92% \u003C\u002Fa>(!) in remote health visits. As a result, the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002F23\u002Fdigital-health-stocks-are-surging-amid-coronavirus-pandemic.html\" target=\"_blank\">value of remote care companies\u003C\u002Fa> began to rise.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another part of the issue in the US is Medicare: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.aarp.org\u002Fcontent\u002Fdam\u002Faarp\u002Fppi\u002F2019\u002F08\u002Ftelehealth-medicare-what-is-covered.doi.10.26419-2Fppi.00080.001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">CMS started reimbursing telemedicine services\u003C\u002Fa> just before COVID hit, in January 2020. According \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jdpower.com\u002Fbusiness\u002Fpress-releases\u002F2019-us-telehealth-satisfaction-study\" target=\"_blank\">to a study\u003C\u002Fa>, only one in 10 patients used telehealth options in the US in 2019. In 2020? Some providers reported a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F1821549\u002Ftelemedicine-faces-unprecedented-demand-in-the-wake-of-coronavirus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">650% growth in one  state\u003C\u002Fa>! And overall satisfaction rate with telehealth was at 89%, as of a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthpopuli.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002F22\u002Ftrust-my-doctor-fear-the-office-and-losing-health-insurance-in-the-covid-19-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">US survey in May\u003C\u002Fa>. It is clear that even with COVID gone, telemedicine will stay. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Post-COVID Life: A Life Yet Uncertain\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is not yet known how we will tackle the global pandemic. What is certain is that masks, social distancing and a general fear will most likely remain with us for quite a while – \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F28443?post_id=28443&amp;_wpnonce=54ff8aa3b6&amp;status=future&amp;type=post&amp;preview=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">and even some technologies, too.\u003C\u002Fa> We will also be less likely willing to go to the hospital or even to go see our own GP, probably for years to come. When (and definitely not ‘if’) telemedicine systems are set up, more and more people will try it. And as we have seen the numbers above, they will stick to it. They will not wait for hours to see a doctor. They’d rather stay at home and do chores while waiting for the doctor online! And it’s definitely a better solution for both the patient and the doctor. Patients will still need real doctors to give answers to their questions. And doctors will have more time on their hands – and possibly experiencing less burnout. Looks like a win-win situation, doesn&#8217;t it?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Use the Force, Luke\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I wish moving on to digital health solutions would be as easy as this. What is definite is that we’ll see more and more solutions becoming the norm, and that will make more and more patients use these. We have the ability to make use of these solutions as we must all become empowered and knowledgeable patients, thereby bring the future upon ourselves.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By becoming the so-called “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnnlm.gov\u002Fclass\u002Fsuperpatients-patients-who-extend-science-when-all-other-options-are-gone\u002F9254\" target=\"_blank\">Superpatients\u003C\u002Fa>”, we take the first step into the age of medical digitalisation. We ourselves need to find what solutions are available in our regions\u002Finsurers or GP and take on from there. Sounds difficult? It isn’t – \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-healthcare-in-estonia\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Estonian Grandmas can do it\u003C\u002Fa>. Because as it seems, telemedicine is going to be the new norm. With lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) and even failing respirators, these shortages are putting at risk both healthcare personnel and patients. But as the saying goes, “necessity is the mother of invention”. To meet these demands in medical supplies, the maker community banded together with their 3D-printers. Formlabs is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fformlabs.com\u002Fcovid-19-response\u002Fcovid-test-swabs\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">printing nasopharyngeal swabs\u003C\u002Fa> required to collect samples for testing COVID-19. Another 3D-printing company, Materialise, released files allowing 3D-printer owners to make their \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.materialise.com\u002Fen\u002Fhands-free-door-opener\" target=\"_blank\">hands-free add-on for common door handles\u003C\u002Fa> so as to reduce transmission of the virus from inanimate surfaces.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Telemedicine: medical advice in home confinement\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the virulence and ease of transmission of SARS-CoV-2, social distancing measures are a must. But what to do if you feel sick or are following an ongoing treatment? Should you risk going to the hospital and putting your health at further risk? As for hospitals, they are already overloaded with critical cases; isn’t there a way to reduce unnecessary visits?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For these issues, telemedicine is a ready-made option that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">saw a boom\u003C\u002Fa> during the pandemic. Patients can consult doctors from the comfort of their homes regarding their symptoms or be monitored for other ailments. In comparison, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jdpower.com\u002Fsites\u002Fdefault\u002Ffiles\u002F2019185_telehealth_usage_and_awareness.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">only 1 in 10 U.S. patients\u003C\u002Fa> used telemedicine services before the pandemic. Responding to the latter, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.doctorondemand.com\u002Fcoronavirus\" target=\"_blank\">Doctor on Demand\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.heydoctor.com\u002Fservices\u002Fcoronavirus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">HeyDoctor\u003C\u002Fa> added free coronavirus risk assessments to their telemedicine service. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedium.com\u002Fplushcare-insider\u002Fplushcares-covid-19-response-including-our-efforts-to-launch-at-home-testing-82a5ebc5e3c1\" target=\"_blank\">PlushCare\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.everlywell.com\u002Fblog\u002Fnews-and-info\u002Four-commitment-to-fighting-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Everlywell\u003C\u002Fa> further plan to release at-home COVID-19 testing kits. The pandemic gave telemedicine a much-needed boost and we might see it getting more and more adopted, even after the outbreak subsides.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Smartphone tracking: high tech contact tracing\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As the novel coronavirus infects an exponential number of people, conventional tracing methods to identify those with the virus and to limit transmission aren’t enough. That’s why governments around the world have resorted to the use of technology for this purpose. Singapore’s opt-in app uses Bluetooth and wireless signals to trace users in proximity. South Korea’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fcoronavirus-south-koreas-success-in-controlling-disease-is-due-to-its-acceptance-of-surveillance-134068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">successful management\u003C\u002Fa> of the outbreak was in part thanks to tracking phone use, in addition to bank transactions and CCTV footage. Moscow \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F14\u002Fworld\u002Fmoscow-cyber-tracking-qr-code-intl\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">launched a QR-based system\u003C\u002Fa> to track the disease. Even the tech giants Apple and Google \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002Finterface\u002F2020\u002F4\u002F14\u002F21219289\u002Fapple-google-contact-tracing-app-android-ios-pros-cons-quarantine-testing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">formed an unlikely partnership\u003C\u002Fa> to include contact-tracing into their operating systems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These intrusive methods blur the lines between civic duty and one’s privacy, somewhat eerily reminiscent to the dystopia George Orwell prophesied. Thankfully, there are ways to preserve privacy while allowing contact tracing that are in the works, as outlined in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-data-privacy-during-a-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">our recent article\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. Artificial Intelligence: the smart aide against COVID-19\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We believe that artificial intelligence (A.I.) will bring about \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fartificial-intelligence-and-the-art-of-medicine\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the real era of the art of medicine\u003C\u002Fa>. With the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of this technology has been further accentuated. We reported early on how it helped epidemiologists \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">issue the first warning\u003C\u002Fa> of the new virus. The Zhongnan Hospital in China is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fchinese-hospitals-deploy-ai-help-diagnose-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">using an A.I.-based system\u003C\u002Fa> to screen lung CT scans and help doctors prioritize potential COVID-19 cases for further testing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcovid.barabasilab.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">BarabasiLab\u003C\u002Fa> is combining machine learning with network science to find new drug candidates against the virus. Researchers \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftechscience.com\u002Fcmc\u002Fv63n1\u002F38464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">shared their findings\u003C\u002Fa> on an A.I. framework to assist in prioritizing resources for critical cases.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While we must be cautious about unrealistic expectations of A.I.’s potential, we cannot ignore \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-sober-state-of-artificial-intelligence-in-the-fight-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">its help in such crises\u003C\u002Fa>. As such, instead of fearing a Skynet-controlled future, we should see A.
