In the case of mental health care, doctors and counsellors moved over to online sessions with a previously unimaginable speed, taking courses and experimenting platforms in a matter of days. Each method has advantages and disadvantages over the other” – Pierce noted. “For example, it may be helpful to have a patient’s friend or family member present in a distressing session, or they may find the distress easier to tolerate within the familiarity of their own home. Telepsychology can make it easier to facilitate these situations.” Pierce went deeper in explaining the differences.

Psychologists are trained to attend to non-verbal cues like foot tapping, fidgeting, or body positioning. Many of these cues are missed via telepsychology: simply because the camera is often capturing images of the participants from the shoulders up. “This means a psychologist must rely more heavily on other cues such as slurred speech, unkempt hair, or noticing their patient rocking in their seat.”

Before and after

This was not the first time Pierce and his team went after telepsychology data. Asking the same questions in 2017, the research found that the most often cited barriers were 1) lack of specific training with telepsychology 2) patient safety 3) privacy concerns and 4) legal issues. Many psychologists were never educated on remote care solutions within their training programs to use them effectively. It is also crucial to recognize who the method is appropriate for, and which solutions and therapies are effective via telepsychology.

As a result of COVID-19, the demand for distance psychological care has increased astonishingly.
