Let’s see what the future of cardiology might look like!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Fitness trackers, chatbots and A.I.\nagainst heart disease\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s say 36-year-old Maria living in Sao Paulo in 2033 decides one day that she wants to change her life and starts running for half an hour every second day. As it’s almost unimaginable to do sports without data measuring gadgets, she starts using a smartwatch. After a while, the device shows an abnormal heart rate and the notification lands in her doctor’s inbox. Other studies are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamanetworkopen\u002Ffullarticle\u002F2780408?resultClick=24\" target=\"_blank\">looking for the answers\u003C\u002Fa> to determine if individuals with known atrial fibrillation (AF) who use smartwatches or wearable devices use more health care resources and achieve better AF control compared to patients not using these devices. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Further away in the future, Maria might also get tiny, implantable sensors to monitor potential symptoms – just as UConn Health’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftoday.uconn.edu\u002Fschool-stories\u002Ftiny-microchip-monitoring-heart-failure-patients-home\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center does in the case of heart failure patients\u003C\u002Fa>. Maria might also use Babylon Health’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.babylonhealth.com\u002Fproduct\u002Fhealthcheck\" target=\"_blank\">Healthcheck\u003C\u002Fa> A.I.-based chatbot to give her a quick assessment of her health, but she might eventually have to go to the hospital for a 12-channel ECG or further exams to decide on preventive treatment. \u003Cstrong>Since the emerging symptoms were already noticed long before anything could happen, Maria could be certain that her ticker will remain healthy for a long time. That’s the promise of technologies for the heart – which we’ll break down in the coming sections.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Cardiology and the ‘silent epidemic’\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fhealth-topics\u002Fcardiovascular-diseases#tab=tab_1\">According to the WHO\u003C\u002Fa>, cardiovascular diseases take the lives of 17.9 million people every year, which means \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fen\u002Fnews-room\u002Ffact-sheets\u002Fdetail\u002Fcardiovascular-diseases-(cvds)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">32 percent of all global death\u003C\u002Fa>. Another common feature is that they are slow to show symptoms, which is why they’re called the ‘silent epidemic’. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Tobacco use, excess alcohol intake, an unhealthy diet or physical inactivity can lead to hypertension, elevated blood glucose levels, being overweight and obese – all of which will eventually manifest as heart attacks, strokes or other severe heart conditions. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Early detection would be key to prevention, but that could only happen through constant monitoring, as early signs of heart diseases are difficult to catch. The Medical Futurist hopes that with the perfection of such easy-to-use devices and their equipment with artificial intelligence, within the next couple of years, cardiology might be more about prediction and early intervention than about the treatment of full-blown diseases. So we looked around in the cardiological landscape to locate the most promising technologies and give a heads up as to what to expect in the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1) How to measure heart sounds?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let’s start with diagnostics and the most common exam done by every GP: listening to heart sounds with the stethoscope, the symbol of being a doctor. Their updated version, the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Frating-portable-diagnostic-devices-that-make-patients-the-point-of-care\" target=\"_blank\">digital stethoscope\u003C\u002Fa> lifts the old-fashioned device to new heights to meet the requirements of the 21\u003Csup>st\u003C\u002Fsup>century.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The most \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fclinicloud-review-should-doctors-and-patients-use-the-digital-stethoscope\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">well-known digital stethoscopes on the market\u003C\u002Fa> are the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fekodevices.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">EKO Core\u003C\u002Fa> products. They worked together with MIT researchers, clinical experts from the Mayo Clinic, nurses, cardiologists, and other health professionals. Today this feature is not unusual anymore, a wide range of digital health products &#8211; including stethoscopes &#8211; use artificial intelligence to support the diagnosis. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It remains yet to see if other solutions, like digital tattoos, can find their way into clinician work. An \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newscientist.com\u002Farticle\u002F2113118-smart-skin-patch-listens-to-your-body-sounds-from-heart-to-gut\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">electronic tattoo\u003C\u002Fa> created at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign picks up on subtle noises inside the human body, including the sound of your heart, muscles, and gastrointestinal tract. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2) What to make of heart rhythm and blood pressure?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Your heart, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.webmd.com\u002Fhypertension-high-blood-pressure\u002Fqa\u002Fhow-much-blood-does-your-heart-pump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">this fist-sized powerhouse beats 100,000 times per day\u003C\u002Fa> – about 60 to 100 times each minute, pumping five or six quarts of blood each minute. As it is not a monotonous, robotic machine, higher and lower blood pressures can occur, just as the phenomenon of your ticker skipping a beat, especially when catching Jennifer Lawrence or Ryan Gosling sipping coffee on a random Italian terrace. However, if beat-skipping or out-of-normal-range blood pressure measurements increase, the possibility of cardiovascular diseases also appears on the horizon.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While blood pressure cuffs are common inhabitants of patients’ apartments, there has been no way to record irregular heartbeats at home until recently. And let’s be honest, it was also high time to modernize the good-old cuffs. Fortunately, both issues are tackled by digital health technologies. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pulse and \u003Ca class=\"img\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F02\u002Fhealth-trackers-body-map-scaled.jpeg\"\u003C\u002Fa>heart rate are vital signs measured by all kinds of fitness trackers and wearables\u003C\u002Fa>, from Fitbit to Apple, Garmin or Polar. A South Korean company, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.ismartsound.com\u002Flang\u002Fen\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">Smartsound Corporation\u003C\u002Fa> developed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fshort-review-of-skeeper-your-pink-pocket-cardiologist\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Skeeper, a pocket cardiologist\u003C\u002Fa> that listens to your heartbeat with the level of the accuracy of a stethoscope, analyzes beats per minute (bpm), and heartbeat consistency. The latter helps its user manage inconsistent heart rate (arrhythmia).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>They are both tiny, pocket-sized devices, but the latest trends are actually about patches – leading to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-tattoos-make-healthcare-more-invisible\" target=\"_blank\">digital tattoos\u003C\u002Fa> in the future – and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-trends-what-to-expect-in-2019\" target=\"_blank\">smartwatches measuring vital signs\u003C\u002Fa>. A great example for the former is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fvitalconnect.com\u002Fsolutions\u002Fvitalpatch\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">VitalConnect’s patch\u003C\u002Fa>, a biosensor monitoring eight physiological measurements simultaneously – among others heart rate, heart rate variability or respiratory rate, while also functioning as a single-lead ECG.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Japanese Omron and Israeli Biobeat have been developing blood pressure monitoring systems. Some og these wearables even promise continuous blood pressure monitoring and the measurement of mean arterial pressure, pulse rate, blood saturation, stroke volume, etc. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Medical Futurist believes that blood pressure cuffs will disappear eventually, tiny wearables, patches and digital tattoos gradually taking their place. However, we are not there yet, as of now pretty much all the devices we tested in this sub-segment came with slightly more compromise than we&#8217;d like to accept. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3) Measuring ECG to monitor atrial fibrillation while doing the dishes at home?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Your heart wants to jump out of your chest like a giraffe trying to escape from the zoo, like a criminal breaking out of jail, like a bird fleeing from a cage. Your pulse rate feels to be accelerating like a spaceship wanting to leave the gravitational field of the Earth. You don’t know what is happening and you are scared of what might be happening next. That’s usually how patients experience atrial fibrillation (AFib). In addition, it’s not only frightening, but it’s also dangerous: it can increase the risk of stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Until recently, it was overwhelmingly difficult to deal with AFib, as it needs continuous electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring providing data about heart rate and rhythm. That has changed with the appearance of digital health devices. For example, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.kardia.com\u002F\">AliveCor’s Kardia\u003C\u002Fa> is an FDA-approved, medical-grade ECG recorder &#8211; and the latest model is literally the size of a credit card, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fwatch?v=4kUSA5zZYIQ\" target=\"_blank\">see our review here\u003C\u002Fa>. It can tell you within a minute whether your ECG is normal, whether you possibly have AFib or experience some “unclassified” risks. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnew-study-kardiaband-apple-watch\" target=\"_blank\">A study found\u003C\u002Fa> that coupled with an Apple Watch, the Kardia was able to detect AFib with very high sensitivity. They wanted to produce a gadget which is easy to use, you can hold it in your pocket, and you can use it whenever and wherever you want to. It counts the number of steps you take a day.
