However, sometimes marketing machines are better\nthan actual technologies, and the ‘little bubbles’ around companies burst.\nHere, we collected the most promising digital health ideas and companies over\nthe years that proved to be the greatest flops in medical innovation so far. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;\u003Cstrong>Big little bubbles&#8217; that turned into digital health failures\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Humans love great stories, especially stories that are\npushing the edge of the capabilities and knowledge of our species. When we hear\nnews about amazing achievements we like to think that’s already out there and\nan available reality for anyone. As in the case of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthcare-in-europe.com\u002Fen\u002Fnews\u002Fresearchers-build-brain-machine-interface-to-control-prosthetic-hand.html\">the research at the University of Houston where a team\ncreated an algorithm\u003C\u002Fa>\nthat allowed a man to grasp a bottle and other objects with a prosthetic hand, only\npowered by his thoughts. The sensationalist nature of media only fuels that: it\ntends to over-hype outstanding medical findings, creative healthcare solutions,\nand ephemeral experiments alike. Well, for 15 minutes, usually, as tomorrow\ncomes a new day with a brand-new sensation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That doesn’t help when trying to stand on the ground\nof realities, not to mention how that creates the illusion that companies must\nget out there with more and more fantastic stories within the shortest amount\nof time possible. Not to mention the fact that investors also love great\nstories and prefer a promising return on their investment – potentially within\nthe shortest amount of time. In healthcare, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-dont-digital-health-investors-finance-tough-medical-issues\u002F\">an industry that has an aversion to change and where\nproduct development takes much more time than with regards to technology in\ngeneral\u003C\u002Fa>, that attitude\ncan become problematic. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>As investment has been pouring steadily into healthcare, especially \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcaredive.com\u002Fnews\u002Fdigital-health-funding-soared-to-record-81b-last-year\u002F545598\u002F\">into the digital health market in the last years\u003C\u002Fa>, and more and more companies would want to get a fair share of the pie, that attitude turns into marketing machines with overhyped messages about what innovations can do and ‘little bubbles’ emerge around disruptive solutions that sound too good to be true. Four years ago, Theranos \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fthe-history-of-silicon-valley-unicorn-theranos-and-ceo-elizabeth-holmes-2018-5\">was evaluated at 9 billion dollars\u003C\u002Fa> and its founder and CEO, Elizabeth Holmes, was on the cover of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vanityfair.com\u002Fnews\u002F2018\u002F06\u002Felizabeth-holmes-is-trying-to-start-a-new-company\">The New York Times Style Magazine, Forbes, Fortune, or Inc\u003C\u002Fa>., and made to the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fthe-silicon-valley-100-2015-1-100-2015-6\">lists of top executives\u003C\u002Fa>. Today, the press mainly reports about her pathological lying tendencies and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fcommentisfree\u002F2018\u002Fjun\u002F03\u002Ftheranos-elizabeth-holmes-media-emperors-new-startup\">how the FDA pulled the plug on Theranos\u003C\u002Fa>. So much so that not only did Google stop selling it in January\n2015, but \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnet.com\u002Fnews\u002Fgoogle-glass-goes-dark-on-social-media\u002F\">a year later the company also erased all social media\nchannels\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> dedicated to\nthe smart specs, once sold for 1,500 dollars\u003C\u002Fstrong>. What happened with the technology once hailed as the\nobject to revolutionize information processing and amalgamate glasses with\ntechnology?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>First of all, there was no consensus among the creators on what Google Glass should be used for or what problems it aims to solve. Without much input from the users, the product developers just assumed that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedium.com\u002Fnyc-design\u002Fthe-assumptions-that-led-to-failures-of-google-glass-8b40a07cfa1e\">the Glass’ hype would compel users to believe in the product and use it accordingly\u003C\u002Fa>. Its two main functions allowed you to quickly take pictures or scroll through the internet, but with a two to three-hour battery life, there was no way the Google Glass could compete with faster processors and superior cameras that did not seem socially unacceptable to use and wear in public. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The tech giant did not give up entirely on the device, though. They are trying much harder to figure out in which industries the augmented reality gadget could be useful. For example, dozens of studies came out analyzing how \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpubmed\u002F?term=Google+Glass\">healthcare could leverage on the Glass\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The San Diego-based company was founded in 2007 by\nthe founders who are also behind \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.modernmeadow.com\">Modern Meadow\u003C\u002Fa>. It became the most well-known player \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-bioprinting-companies\u002F\">in the field of bioprinting\u003C\u002Fa>, actively developing a line of human tissues for use\nin medical research and drug discovery. These include both normal tissues and\nspecially designed disease models. They are also working on the development of\nspecific tissues for use in clinical patient care. In\n2014, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalxpress.com\u002Fnews\u002F2014-11-organovo-3d-printed-liver-tissue-drug.html\">they announced the successful printing of liver tissue\u003C\u002Fa>s that functioned as a real liver for weeks. A year\nlater, fully functional human kidney tubular tissues were generated with the\ncompany’s 3D bioprinter. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In December 2016, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002F3dprintingindustry.com\u002Fnews\u002Forganovo-3d-bioprinted-liver-tissue-make-fda-2019-101775\u002F\">pre-clinical trial data showed\u003C\u002Fa> that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002F3dprintingindustry.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbioprinted-liver-tissue-generate-organ-level-responses-87096\u002F\">3D bioprinted liver tissue\u003C\u002Fa> had been successfully planted into lab-bred mice, and expectations were high about Organovo applying for FDA clearance within 3-5 years. \u003Cstrong>Even we expected them to bring their innovation forward, but instead, a couple of weeks ago, they announced that they are &#8216;\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.us8.list-manage.com\u002Ftrack\u002Fclick?u=5b42ebb547c75ff669a6572d3&amp;id=9790ce1f2b&amp;e=d647e4d78c\" target=\"_blank\">seeking strategic alternatives\u003C\u002Fa>&#8216; for their business as their liver tissue requires redevelopment. It turns out that bioprinting tissues represent such a huge technological challenge that Organovo couldn’t manifest in the last couple of years. The other issue might be regulation that’s lagging behind\u003C\u002Fstrong>. At the end of last year, the FDA announced it is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fda.gov\u002Fnewsevents\u002Fnewsroom\u002Fpressannouncements\u002Fucm587547.htm\">reviewing the regulatory issues related to the bioprinting\u003C\u002Fa> of biological, cellular and tissue-based products to determine whether additional guidance is needed, although that would clearly be vital – not least from an investor’s point of view: as a ‘last resort’ to turn to for assurance that the technology is working.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"238\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F01\u002Forganovo-bioprinting-512x238.jpg\" alt=\"Digital Health 2018\" class=\"wp-image-16935\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F01\u002Forganovo-bioprinting-512x238.jpg 512w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F01\u002Forganovo-bioprinting-768x357.jpg 768w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F01\u002Forganovo-bioprinting-458x212.jpg 458w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F01\u002Forganovo-bioprinting.jpg 870w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \u002F>\u003Cfigcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: www.organovo.com\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4) \u003Cstrong>SCiO, the food scanner that bit off more than it could chew\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Food scanners such as \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftellspec.com\u002F\">TellSpec\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.consumerphysics.com\u002F\">SCiO\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> promised to solve the great puzzle of our modern\nlives: we have no idea what the food on our plate comes from. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, while the Canadian company, TellSpec managed to develop a sensor that today can test for a variety of foods, including fruit quality and control (Brix, Acidity, and Waste), Vitamin C in fruits, melamine in baby formula, and as part of the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Feit.europa.eu\u002F\">European Institute of Innovation and Technology\u003C\u002Fa>, they created an app to detect fish quality and fraud, the Israeli start-up, SCiO, a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnocamels.com\u002F2019\u002F03\u002Fscio-kickstarter-darling-promises-molecular-sensor\u002F\">real Kickstarter sensation back in 2014\u003C\u002Fa>, sort of disappeared from the scene. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is said to have developed a multifaceted sensor in order to identify the molecular content of foods, medicines, and even plants. The gadget is supposed to illuminate an object; optical sensors detect the reflected light, and the device analyzes it using an algorithm and a cloud-based database that is constantly updated. The company said that in milliseconds the ingredients and molecular make–up of the foodstuff would appear on the user’s smartphone. However, \u003Cstrong>Kickstarter backers who received their product in recent years \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2016\u002F09\u002F16\u002Fscio-the-pocket-sized-molecular-analyzer-is-making-everyone-angry\u002F\">did not exactly receive what the demo had promised\u003C\u002Fa>. After that, and a dispute with SCIO Health Analytics over the name, the company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnocamels.com\u002F2019\u002F03\u002Fscio-kickstarter-darling-promises-molecular-sensor\u002F\">decided to shift from individual consumers to big companies\u003C\u002Fa> – although their website doesn’t reflect that clearly. When Scanadu Scout came out of the X Prize Foundation’s Qualcomm Tricorder competition, we were thrilled – and so was everyone else. It soon broke an \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.indiegogo.com\u002Fprojects\u002Fscanadu-scout\" target=\"_blank\">Indiegogo record\u003C\u002Fa>, raising more than $1.6 million in less than a month in 2014. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.scanadu.com\u002Fproducts\u002Fvitals\">Scanadu Scout\u003C\u002Fa>, a handheld sensor held against a patient’s forehead, promised to measure heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygenation percentage, body temperature, while taking readings of blood pressure, ECG, and stress levels. The company said it was also working on Scanadu Urine for home use, which would have given users data about liver, kidney, urinary tract, and metabolic functions. Alphabet’s company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2018-11-16\u002Falphabet-s-verily-halts-diabetes-detecting-contact-lens-project\">Verily Life Sciences halted one of its longest-running projects with this announcement\u003C\u002Fa>. The company said that the reason for shutting down the initiative was that it couldn’t get the experimental lens, which measures glucose in tears, to deliver assessments of blood glucose with enough consistency to be used as a medical device\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Although we somewhat expected the disappointing news as there was no word about the undertaking for months, we still had a pinch of hope around the research. A.I.-powered solutions, such as Watson for Oncology or Watson for Genomics were aimed at enhancing personalized medicine, medical imaging, cutting back on administration or helping medical facilities better leverage on data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, while the results\nof IBM Watson seemed to be great on paper, clinical evidence hasn’t followed so\nfar to underpin it. Recently, the company even \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.extremetech.com\u002Fextreme\u002F289852-ibm-halts-sales-of-watson-ai-for-drug-discovery-and-research\">halted its sales of Watson\nA.I. for drug discovery and research\u003C\u002Fa>. Moreover, in July 2019, Watson\nmade headlines for offering \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2018\u002F7\u002F26\u002F17619382\u002Fibms-watson-cancer-ai-healthcare-science\">potentially dangerous\nmedical advice\u003C\u002Fa> based on hypothetical patient data. That doesn’t sound reassuring, at\nall.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Lately, it seems that IBM is aiming for diversifying its healthcare portfolio and cutting back on its A.I. focus as a result of setbacks. In 2017, the MD Anderson Cancer Center \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fmatthewherper\u002F2017\u002F02\u002F19\u002Fmd-anderson-benches-ibm-watson-in-setback-for-artificial-intelligence-in-medicine\u002F#5a1c7aad3774\">broke up\u003C\u002Fa> its partnership with IBM. The two had worked together since 2013, when MD Anderson stated it “is using the IBM Watson cognitive computing system for its mission to eradicate cancer.” But \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.biospace.com\u002Farticle\u002Fibm-watson-layoffs-is-healthcare-ai-ready-for-prime-time-\u002F\">in late 2016, the project was put on hold\u003C\u002Fa> and auditors at the University of Texas in a report said the project cost MD Anderson more than $62 million but didn’t meet its goals. In 2018, the company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2018\u002F06\u002Fibm-layoffs\u002F\">reported\u003C\u002Fa> a round of layoffs at its Watson Health unit, and \u003Cstrong>some employees were complaining about the marketing budget being large but scientific findings not materializing in products. That doesn’t mean that the technology won’t work in the future, it just means that they must focus more on technology, less on marketing, and streamline management.
