And, as with all the previous industrial revolutions, a fair amount of current tasks will become obsolete and will be taken over by AI, by robots, by sensors or by cloud processes. Some of these we can predict now, but surely, there are many we don’t even know will exist in 20 years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So, instead of looking at the upcoming revolution as the end of something, a grim prospect of machines taking people’s jobs, we should focus on it as an opportunity, and keep in mind that those who adapt will be the winners of the change.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And now let’s take a look at some of the future healthcare jobs I believe will come. Robot companion technician\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This may not sound like a thing now, but trust me, it will become a thing very soon. As robotic companions are getting \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsocial-robots-are-robotic-pets-any-worse-than-the-real-ones\" target=\"_blank\">more and more popular\u003C\u002Fa>, there will be an increasing demand for professionals who can fix our little buddy when it suddenly becomes unresponsive.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Somewhere in the 2030s. Lucy decided to buy a robot companion for his dad who lives alone in a big house in the suburbs of Nashville to help with the household, to make sure that he takes his medication or calls an ambulance whenever it is necessary or just to keep him company. The robot, Ted, looks almost like a 60-year-old man with wrinkles on his face and grey hair. He was designed by a robot companion engineer, who contacted the family to let them describe what kind of robot they wanted and turned their wishes into reality. The technician fixed a small electric failure, and told them to call him anytime they experience a problem. He reassured them that only a couple of robot companions are assigned to him, which he knows thoroughly, and he will be available 24\u002F7.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Deep learning expert training algorithms\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Narrow AI is already a reality. Companies are already looking for highly skilled data scientists and deep learning experts in every field. AI-based algorithms will not only assist medical decisions but also dominate how healthcare is organized and how health insurance is determined. When making a decision, – e.g. about whether an MRI image shows a tumor, data runs through various layers of neurons. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Before it can get things right, these artificial neural networks need lots of training. It needs to see hundreds of thousands, even millions of images so that experts can tune the weightings of the neuron inputs so precisely that it gets the answer right practically every time. The number of wearable devices with various health and fitness features grows at an impressive speed, it was reported that in the third quarter of 2023 alone more than 140 million devices have shipped. Healing gamification specialist\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Somewhere in the 2040s. Peter and his family were celebrating his wife’s 50th birthday when he suddenly felt a twitch in his head and fell unconscious. The ambulance came within minutes, and the medical drones helped transport him very quickly to get adequate care. It turned out he had a stroke and his healing process will take several months. For instance, AI-assisted mammography and treatment planning have shown promising results in diverse settings, including both \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.lunduniversity.lu.se\u002Farticle\u002Fai-supported-mammography-screening-found-be-safe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in Sweden\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealth.google\u002Fcaregivers\u002Fmammography\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the U.S\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the field of radiotherapy for cancers such as lung, prostate, and colorectal, AI technologies are being harnessed \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nice.org.uk\u002Fnews\u002Farticle\u002Fartificial-intelligence-technologies-to-speed-up-contouring-in-radiotherapy-treatment-planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to accelerate treatment planning\u003C\u002Fa>. This not only reduces the workload for healthcare professionals but also improves patient outcomes – a true win-win scenario we are looking for when designing these studies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Artificial intelligence has firmly established its presence in the medical field. The primary consideration is not whether AI will be integrated into standard care, but rather how it will be implemented. Unless one has been metaphorically sleeping through the past year, much like a 21st-century Sleeping Beauty, the rise and relevance of AI in medicine is unmistakable.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are patients to pay the cost of AI in their care? \u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As AI finds its way into everyday clinical settings, a critical question emerges: who will pay for the deployment (and use and maintenance) of such systems? And this is not a sci-fi question, but something we face today. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This article discussed how the author was asked \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2024\u002F01\u002F26\u002Fhealth\u002Fai-mammograms-kff-health-news\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">if she wanted to pay $40 extra\u003C\u002Fa> for additional AI analysis in mammography. In her case a Manhattan radiology clinic offered an AI analysis of their mammogram for an additional $40, not covered by insurance. This scenario was echoed at a clinic in suburban Baltimore, where patients were similarly offered AI-assisted mammography for a $40 fee. Healthcare systems all over the world are extremely diverse, and there will be no “one size fits all” answer that is equally applicable to the private insurance-based model in the USA to the tax-funded public healthcare in Scandinavian countries.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Will AI be cheaper or more expensive than doctors?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The question of whether AI will be more cost-effective than traditional medical practices is complex, and the earlier cited examples, where patients were charged extra for AI-assisted mammography, do not necessarily represent a universal pricing model for AI in healthcare. In the future, the cost comparison might not be straightforward and could involve weighing the price of a doctor’s time against the operational costs of an AI algorithm.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Consider the scenario of laboratory tests. If AI can provide sufficient analysis at a cost of X, and you need to pay 2X for a doctor to review, relying on the algorithm’s assessment becomes a cost-effective option. But of course, it may happen the other way around, it is too early to know that.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Conversely, while AI might offer an additional layer of analysis for imaging tests like MRIs, this could potentially come at a higher cost. The financial implications of AI in healthcare are still evolving, and it’s unclear how these will reshape overall costs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In countries with private insurance-based healthcare systems, the key factor is insurance coverage: will plans adapt to cover AI-enhanced services, and how will this affect premiums and out-of-pocket expenses?
