Here, you find my verdict about the peanut sensor.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Peanuts are deadlier than tornadoes\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As odd as it sounds, peanuts might be more dangerous than hurricanes. While the allergic reactions to the underground seeds kill every year about 150 people, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.livescience.com\u002F34559-tornado-deaths-infographic.html\">tornadoes stay in the range of 100-120 – except for some peak years\u003C\u002Fa>. And \u003Cstrong>in the case of the innocent-looking peanuts, a minimal amount can cause a life-threatening \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Facaai.org\u002Fallergies\u002Ftypes\u002Ffood-allergies\u002Ftypes-food-allergy\u002Fpeanut-allergy\">anaphylactic shock\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> – and if there’s no EpiPen around, the attack can result in a deadly outcome\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, peanut allergy is more common than ever before: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoungwomenshealth.org\u002F2013\u002F12\u002F06\u002Fpeanut-allergy\u002F\">its prevalence has tripled in the past ten years\u003C\u002Fa>. In the Western world, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.news-medical.net\u002Fhealth\u002FPeanut-Allergy-Prevalence.aspx\">the occurrence in some populations can be as high as 1 in 200 individuals\u003C\u002Fa>. In the United Kingdom, peanut allergy is present in between 0.4 and 0.6 % of the whole community. Approximately 1-2% of children in the United States have a diagnosed peanut allergy. However, in China, fish, shrimp, seaweed, and crab trigger food allergies, which make up only 3.4 to 5.0% of all allergies, while peanut allergy is unheard of. In Australia, the chance of getting a peanut allergy is even more unlikely: only 0.25% of the population is concerned.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Beyond the severity and prevalence of the food allergy, peanuts are especially dangerous and difficult to fight – and they generally show their true colors very early\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Peanut allergy \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoungwomenshealth.org\u002F2013\u002F12\u002F06\u002Fpeanut-allergy\u002F\">usually starts by age 2 with 75% of allergic reactions happening the first time a child eats peanuts\u003C\u002Fa>. Since then, the device became a popular tool among people with gluten sensitivities.\u003C\u002Fstrong> As their world map shows, meals were tested in many corners of the Earth: from the Siam Kitchen Express in Hawaii through the Dolce Locura in Chile until the Sushilka in Russia.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>I also had the chance to test the gluten sensor with both gluten-containing and gluten-free meals – and \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftesting-food-gluten-home-nima-sensor-review\">the entire team had a technological sublime during the process\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>. It’s that simple. The developers even made it easier to screw back on the cap of the capsule. After some softer grunting sounds, the pyramid will show the result. In the peanut butter case I was obviously expecting a „peanut found” signal, and after two minutes, voilá, it appeared.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I also \u003Cstrong>tested the sensor with a biscuit on whose packaging it was said that &#8220;it contains peanut in traces&#8221;\u003C\u002Fstrong> since I believe it might be the most important feature of the Nima to detect the amount of peanut which might already cause an allergic reaction. They explain that antibodies are large, y-shaped proteins recognizing and binding to specific target proteins – thus showing their existence clearly. That’s why they are frequently used to detect proteins in lab tests.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a consequence, the Nima team designed the sensor to detect traces of peanut in meals using specific proteins. For brainiacs: the Nima 20B10 and 16B1 antibodies bind to a peanut protein called Arah3. Although not the most antigenic, it is most abundant in all types of peanut and is more stable under processing conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"842\" height=\"870\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002F1712507217.rsc.cdn77.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F10\u002FIMG_6768.jpg\" alt=\"peanut sensor\" class=\"wp-image-22204\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F10\u002FIMG_6768.jpg 842w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F10\u002FIMG_6768-768x793.jpg 768w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2018\u002F10\u002FIMG_6768-496x512.jpg 496w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 842px) 100vw, 842px\" \u002F>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What type of foods could it test?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nima team designed the anti-peanut pyramid to test for 10 ppm, and above (equal to 0.001g peanut in a standard serving size of 100g), thus it can show tiny amounts and traces of peanut in food as well. \u003Cstrong>No matter whether it’s about soups, sauces, ice cream, peanut butter, baked goods or packaged foods.\u003C\u002Fstrong> However, there are certain \u003Cstrong>limitations\u003C\u002Fstrong>: the sensor cannot test sesame, eggplant, paprika, tomato paste or doesn’t process alcohol and solid chocolate well.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Nima team was also thoughtful enough to include a pocket guide into its box &#8211; thus users do not have to remember all the food restrictions and limitations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Regarding \u003Cstrong>the question of whether or not the peanut sensor could recognize other nuts\u002Ftree nuts – the support services responded that peanuts aren’t nuts in a technical sense.\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;Thus the team would have to create another type of sensor for testing tree nuts – and they don’t have such plans at the moment. While tree nuts, such as almonds, cashews, walnuts grow on trees, peanuts are underground vegetables, really. They belong to the family of lentils, beans or peas. (Could you send it back, so it doesn’t pollute the environment?) A 12-pack costs $72– or $59 for premium members, which means that one test costs around $5-6. That is not cheap at all. So you have to decide when and what to test.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, if you are living in the US and your health insurance benefits include FSA\u002FHSA reimbursement, the peanut sensor and test capsules are reimbursable with a peanut allergy diagnosis. That’s great news, and more insurance companies should follow that great example in the future!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All-in-all, the Nima peanut sensor can provide peace of mind to anyone suffering from peanut allergy due to its easy testing procedure, portability – and accuracy. The sensors have been the subject of independent lab testing, one of which showed the sensitivity of the peanut sensor was 100 percent and the accuracy was 99.2 percent, while \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnimasensor.com\u002F2018\u002F08\u002F15\u002Fnima-peanut-assessment\u002F\">Nima&#8217;s own results\u003C\u002Fa> showed 99 percent and 97.6 percent accuracy, respectively. In Michigan State University’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.canr.msu.edu\u002Fnews\u002Fmsu-food-literacy-and-engagement-poll-wave-ii\">Food Literacy and Engagement Poll\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fwould-you-eat-meat-from-a-lab-consumers-arent-necessarily-sold-on-cultured-meat-100933\">The Conversation surveyed\u003C\u002Fa> over 2,100 Americans in 2018 asking, “\u003Cem>How likely would you be to purchase foods that look and taste identical to meat, but are based on ingredients that are produced artificially?\u003C\u002Fem>” The results were ambivalent. One-third of Americans said they would be likely to purchase cultured meat, with the other two-thirds veering toward caution. Forty-eight percent told the interviewers they’d be unlikely to buy this product.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Alternative foods of the future\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What if we put things in perspective and push them to the limit? Scientists say the traditional pathways of agriculture might collapse due to climate change and overproduction in the next 2-3 decades. For reasons of food security, experts and organizations responsible for nutrition are not only contemplating the idea of clean meat and other types of artificial foods, but also insect-eating. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Around \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.fao.org\u002Fnews\u002Fstory\u002Fen\u002Fitem\u002F175922\u002Ficode\u002F\">2 billion people\u003C\u002Fa> regularly eat insects as part of their diet, and over \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.fao.org\u002Fdocrep\u002F018\u002Fi3253e\u002Fi3253e.pdf\">1,900 species\u003C\u002Fa> are edible. (According to the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fnews.nationalgeographic.com\u002Fnews\u002F2013\u002F13\u002F130514-edible-insects-entomophagy-science-food-bugs-beetles\u002F\">National Geographic\u003C\u002Fa>, stinkbugs actually taste like apples.) The most commonly eaten bugs are beetles, caterpillars, bees, wasps and ants.
