Israel is already \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.engadget.com\u002Fisrael-limits-covid-19-tracking-210512788.html\" target=\"_blank\">limiting phone tracking\u003C\u002Fa> of infected individuals for “specific and special cases”. And it’s harder to imagine people regularly checking online maps about the virus’ spread after it subsides than seeing them wear face masks in public.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, several technologies that proved their worth in handling the crisis could linger for far longer. We stand more to gain with a high(er) tech hospital than one devoid of such tools. In fact, the latter is adapted to address issues that were here before the pandemic and needed widespread adoption. In this article, we’ll explore four specific examples of such technologies that should remain in use post-COVID-19 given their benefits.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003Cstrong>The new, high-tech essential workers: disinfectant robots\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the President of the United States’ suggestion to use disinfectants “by injection inside” or bring “light inside the body” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fworld-us-canada-52399464\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won’t do any good\u003C\u002Fa> against the virus in internal organs, using these methods on inanimate surfaces is a whole other affair. In fact, ultraviolet (UV) light, specifically UV-C, is a well-established disinfecting method in the healthcare world. By altering the virus’ genetic material, UV light ensures the virus won’t replicate. However, exposure to the human skin can lead to irritations, sunburns and in the worst case, skin cancer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nevertheless, the benefits of UV-C to effectively disinfect hospitals are attracting robotics engineers and healthcare authorities alike. “Instead of manual disinfection, which requires workforce mobilization and increases exposure risk to cleaning personnel, autonomous or remote-controlled disinfection robots could lead to cost-effective, fast, and effective disinfection,” a group of researchers \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Frobotics.sciencemag.org\u002Fcontent\u002F5\u002F40\u002Feabb5589\" target=\"_blank\">wrote in the Science Robotics journal\u003C\u002Fa>. “New generations of robots, from macro- to microscale, could be developed to navigate high-risk areas and continually work to sterilize all high-touch surfaces.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fuv-disinfectant-robot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-28447\" srcset=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fuv-disinfectant-robot.jpg 750w, https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fuv-disinfectant-robot-370x208.jpg 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: www.rankred.com\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With this philosophy in mind, companies like YouiBot are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbusiness-51914722\" target=\"_blank\">redesigning their existing robots\u003C\u002Fa> into UV disinfectant ones. Others like Danish company UVD Robots \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fspectrum.ieee.org\u002Fautomaton\u002Frobotics\u002Fmedical-robots\u002Fautonomous-robots-are-helping-kill-coronavirus-in-hospitals\" target=\"_blank\">shipped hundreds of its disinfectant robots\u003C\u002Fa> around the world during the pandemic. Another disinfectant robot, Violet, can completely disinfect a CT scanner room in 15 minutes; a procedure that would take a human radiographer \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5825860\u002Fcoronavirus-robot\u002F\">up to 60 minutes\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than saving valuable time and stopping the spread of COVID-19 in hospitals, \u003Cstrong>such robots will help prevent hospital acquired infections\u003C\u002Fstrong>; an unfortunate consequence that anyone is exposed to. Among those with such infections, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC6245375\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 17 fatally succumb to it\u003C\u002Fa> in the U.S. alone. Now we have a robust, high-tech method to reduce these.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. The power of anticipation: A.I. predicting future outbreaks\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-would-have-covid-19-taken-place-in-a-digital-health-utopia\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a digital health utopia\u003C\u002Fa>, A.I. would help forecast a viral outbreak weeks, if not months, in advance. Unfortunately, we don’t live in such a utopia. But the good news is that we can work towards such a forecasting system with our current technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Cited as early as we learnt of the novel coronavirus, A.I. company BlueDot had \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-digital-health-technology-can-help-manage-the-coronavirus-outbreak\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">issued the first warnings\u003C\u002Fa>. By scrutinizing hordes of data reports from news, airlines and animal disease outbreaks, their algorithm detected a trend. Alex Engler, adjunct professor and affiliated scholar at Georgetown University, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fartificial-intelligence-wont-save-us-from-coronavirus\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">writes that\u003C\u002Fa> “A.I. will play only a marginal role in our fight against Covid-19” and calls for “healthy skepticism of A.I. claims around Covid-19”. However, we believe that it is us who weren’t ready for a pandemic, despite having the necessary technology to help us better prepare. Given the novelty of COVID-19, not enough data sets are available to feed algorithms. But even with the limited information, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-sober-state-of-artificial-intelligence-in-the-fight-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">we had promising results \u003C\u002Fa>from outbreak prediction through triage in diagnosis to resource management.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Unfortunately, BlueDot was the exception rather than the rule and we must reverse the situation to better handle the next public health crisis.\u003Cstrong> \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fartificial-intelligence-couldnt-save-us-from-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cstrong>Even the skeptics agree\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> on A.I.’s help in future health crises.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Given the unprecedented predictive power that A.I. brings to the healthcare sector, authorities should heed to its potential and help make it more commonplace in the hospital setting. By securely sharing data to feed predictive algorithms, the software can alert authorities of any potential outbreak and timely action can be taken to prevent a public crisis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Quality healthcare at your fingertips: remote care via smartphones \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s an unfortunate reality that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the pandemic helped put telemedicine on the fast track\u003C\u002Fa> for mainstream adoption. The latter are enduring \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.huffpost.com\u002Fentry\u002Fthis-is-what-medical-workers-fighting-coronavirus-want-you-to-know_l_5e7e4d72c5b6256a7a2a01c5\" target=\"_blank\">extreme work conditions and sacrifices\u003C\u002Fa> in order to help the infected. Despite a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), they show up to work using DIY-solutions like ski goggles and bin bags with a high risk of being infected. Many are working overtime and witnessed patient after patient succumb to the disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>The anxiety of knowing you might be at risk when you’re doing your job can be very challenging for health care workers\u003C\u002Fem>,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F3\u002F5\u002F21166088\u002Fcoronavirus-covid-19-protection-doctors-nurses-health-workers-risk\">says Terri Rebmann\u003C\u002Fa>, a nurse researcher and director of the Institute for Biosecurity at Saint Louis University. “\u003Cem>It’s physically and mentally draining\u003C\u002Fem>.” This will lead to an inevitable spike in burnouts among the healthcare staff. Before the novel coronavirus, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-burnout\u002F\">some estimated\u003C\u002Fa> nearly half of the world’s 10 million physicians had symptoms of burnout. Now imagine after COVID-19…\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than burnouts, we will see frontliners with symptoms of \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\">post-traumatic stress disorder\u003C\u002Fa> (PTSD). After this pandemic subsides, we will have to brace ourselves for the aftermath on medical professionals on the frontlines.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-pullquote is-style-default\">\u003Cblockquote>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>2021 UPDATE \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fblockquote>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>This is one of the saddest and most depriving moments in the history of medicine. All of the above are still underway: medical professionals being emotionally drained, leaving the field, having mental health issues and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailynews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F22\u002Fa-lot-of-us-are-going-to-have-ptsd-fatigue-burnout-exhaustion-plague-health-care-workers-during-covid-surge\" target=\"_blank\">burnout\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.concordmonitor.com\u002FCOVID-traumatizing-doctors-and-nurses-38381975\" target=\"_blank\">Institutions\u003C\u002Fa>, governments and even the direct management of medical facilities realised this way too late and are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fuk-wales-55770323\" target=\"_blank\">now rushing\u003C\u002Fa> to\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.africanews.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F25\u002Fcommunity-health-workers-must-be-better-supported-in-2021-the-year-of-the-healthcare-worker\u002F\" target=\"_blank\"> provide support\u003C\u002Fa> to staff with direct counselling, online support or via applications – with mixed results. We will think twice before going somewhere or meeting someone. And although we have positive takeaways from online meetings (we can be much more effective), home or office is still not a choice but a situation.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Moreover, with so much time spent online, we now have multiple generations glued to the screens and sometimes unknowingly spreading misinformation limitlessly.
