What could digital health technologies\ndo to support the fight against the climate crisis? How could healthcare\nprocesses, facilities, medical devices become more sustainable? As it is\nhumanity’s priority to mitigate the worsening as well as the impact of rising\ntemperatures and extreme weather events, we tried to figure out what role\ndigital health could assume here. We found many options – and even more\npossibilities for future development. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The climate crisis is our third world war\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>That’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fcommentisfree\u002F2019\u002Fjun\u002F04\u002Fclimate-change-world-war-iii-green-new-deal\">the main argument of Joseph Stiglitz\u003C\u002Fa>, recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences and former chief economist of the World Bank on why opponents of green policies, such as the Green New Deal in the US, should not be asking whether we can afford it – as no one asked that during the Second World War, but did what they thought was necessary to do. \u003Cstrong>The problem with the climate catastrophe is that many people don’t feel it immediately on their own skin – but by the time it becomes painfully palpable for millions, we have already lost the battle. \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It’s similar to the tale when two frogs jumped into a cooking pot full of cold water. The first one screamed that they were going to die and jumped out, while the second was completely relaxed thinking they found a nice pond to spend the time in. As the temperature of the water was raised gradually, the frog got accustomed to the change and didn’t realize that he’s being cooked. In May, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.severe-weather.eu\u002Frecent-events\u002Fextremely-hot-weather-in-nw-russia-today-31-c-near-the-arctic-circle-may-12th-2019\u002F\">extremely hot air masses reached the Russian town of\nKoynas\u003C\u002Fa>, near the Arctic\ncircle, and the temperature reached 31.2 degrees (88.2 degrees Fahrenheit).\nThat’s “just” 25-30 degrees above the usual. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.sky.com\u002Fstory\u002Fdramatic-photo-shows-husky-dogs-walking-on-water-in-greenland-11743906\">The photo about huskies galloping in melted ice on\nGreenland\u003C\u002Fa> went viral in\nJune, while a heatwave hit Europe at that time – resulting in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fhow-extreme-heat-overwhelms-your-body-and-becomes-deadly\u002F\">Death Valley being cooler than southern France\u003C\u002Fa>. Temperatures reached a record-breaking 45.8 degrees\n(114.6 degrees Fahrenheit). To make the scary extent of global warming more\npalpable, The New York Times together with the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.impactlab.org\u002F\">Climate Impact Lab\u003C\u002Fa>,\na group of climate scientists, economists and data analysts from the Rhodium\nGroup, the University of Chicago, Rutgers University and the University of\nCalifornia, Berkeley, created \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002Finteractive\u002F2018\u002F08\u002F30\u002Fclimate\u002Fhow-much-hotter-is-your-hometown.html\">an\ninteractive map where anyone can see how hotter their hometown has become over\nthe years\u003C\u002Fa> and what are the predictions for the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Those are just a couple of recent examples, but \u003Cstrong>the climate crisis has extremely serious health consequences for entire communities, too. In \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.who.int\u002Firis\u002Fbitstream\u002Fhandle\u002F10665\u002F276405\u002F9789241514972-eng.pdf?ua=1\">its COP24 Special Report, the WHO outlines\u003C\u002Fa> that the direct health impacts include physiological effects of exposure to higher temperatures, increasing incidences of respiratory and cardiovascular disease and injuries and death due to extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, heatwaves, storms, and wildfires\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In addition, the changing climate conditions also have indirect effects on health due to ecological changes, such as food and water insecurity, the spread of climate-sensitive infectious diseases, and also to societal responses to climate change, such as population displacement and reduced access to health services. The international organization also found that the causes for the rising public costs stem from the growing needs of aging populations, the increasing share of chronic illnesses in societies, the rising incomes driving higher expectations – and the introduction of new technologies. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In addition, the needs-based shortage of healthcare workers globally is about 17.4\nmillion, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcould-a-i-solve-the-human-resources-crisis-in-healthcare\">says The Medical Futurist Institute in its latest\npaper\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong>.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\nThat’s almost the entire population of Chile and twice as many as living in\nAustria or Israel. Moreover, the WHO’s \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.euro.who.int\u002Fen\u002Fhealth-topics\u002FHealth-systems\u002Fhealth-workforce\u002Fdata-and-statistics\">\u003Cem>Global\nStrategy on Human Resources for Health: Workforce 2030\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa> reports\nthat shortages can mount up to 9.9 million physicians, nurses and midwives\nglobally by 2030. \u003Cstrong>What if we add a\nsignificant number of extreme weather events and catastrophes to this picture?\nHow far could we strain healthcare systems?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In order for public health systems to be able to better prepare for the consequences of the climate catastrophe, they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.who.int\u002Firis\u002Fbitstream\u002Fhandle\u002F10665\u002F276405\u002F9789241514972-eng.pdf?ua=1\">must be able to increase the quality, range and population coverage of their services\u003C\u002Fa> and ensure that they are resilient to changing climate conditions, such as extreme weather events.\u003C\u002Fstrong> While digital health technologies might not be able to take up arms against climate change per se, they can offer a lot of help when it comes to arming public and private health systems for dealing with the health consequences of extreme weather events. Unfortunately, rising temperatures are in favor of our\nleast beloved animals, the mosquitos and their little friends spreading around\nlethal illnesses\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For example, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Finfographics\u002Fclimate-and-health\">The Lancet found\u003C\u002Fa> that due to changing climatic conditions\nin countries where dengue fever is endemic, the capacity for one of the main\nmosquitoes (Aedes aegpyti) to transmit dengue fever has increased globally\nsince 1950 by 9.5 percent. In another example, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flancet\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS0140-6736(16)00256-7\u002Ffulltext\">extreme\nclimatic conditions during one month in several parts of South America in 2015\nwere followed by the spread of the mosquito-borne Zika virus\u003C\u002Fa> to\nthat location the next month.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Digital tools could help take action\nagainst mosquito-borne diseases. Nicely drawn electronic maps indicating different pieces of information could help\nprevent, closely follow or monitor epidemics and\u002For the spread of diseases\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Technology is not only able to visualize data but\nit already “reasons out” grey spots – and thus helps predict events.\nFor example, American researchers \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nasa.gov\u002Ffeature\u002Fgoddard\u002F2017\u002Fusing-nasa-satellite-data-to-predict-malaria-outbreaks\">were\nusing\u003C\u002Fa> data from NASA satellites (such as the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.engadget.com\u002F2016\u002F06\u002F27\u002Fgoogle-earth-maps-higher-quality-imagery\u002F\">Landsat\u003C\u002Fa> series)\nto predict malaria outbreaks by identifying areas where the soil moisture\ncreates prime breeding grounds for malaria-positive mosquitos. That could make\nthe taking of public health measures a lot more efficient. As the saying goes: an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Releasing sterile specimen into the wild has proved to be an effective method in decreasing insect populations. Numerous countries experiment with the approach with the help of several technologies. In 2018, Australia’s James Cook University, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation, and Alphabet’s Verily life biotech division concluded a similar trial. And how could Google’s parent company be of any help? Experts needed to raise 20 million mosquitos for the project to produce the 3 million male insects required for the sterilization process. Quite the contrary. In\n2003, a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fhow-extreme-heat-overwhelms-your-body-and-becomes-deadly\u002F\">heat\nwave lasting two weeks killed an estimated 15,000 people in France\u003C\u002Fa>\n&#8211; and 70,000 throughout Europe. Heat usually strikes the vulnerable: the\nelderly, infants, people with medical conditions, but deaths also occur among\nathletes and outdoor workers. That’s why individuals, as well as healthcare\nsystems, should put more emphasis on the prevention and management of\nheat-related conditions more in the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Beyond \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2019\u002F06\u002F29\u002Feurope\u002Fclimate-change-heatwaves-cities-intl\u002Findex.html\">creating more parks, green roofs, or vertical gardens\u003C\u002Fa>, which would significantly lower the temperature of the surrounding streets in urban settings, as well as placing mist showers, fountains, and reflective pools around towns, early alerts, advisories, and a variety of emergency measures could also mitigate heat dangers\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Such heat health warning systems could include dissemination of information on relevant websites, pamphlets or media campaigns – and in the future, they could involve health apps or alerts sent to smartphones, too. The air pollutants which are\ncausing ill-health, and the greenhouse gases that are causing climate change,\nare emitted from many of the same sectors, including energy, housing, transport,\nand agriculture. \u003Cstrong>While digital health\ntechnologies cannot put an end to the emission of harmful materials, the\ndevelopment of health sensors, connected devices, and wearables could help with\nthe diagnostics and management of respiratory diseases.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblogs.bmj.com\u002Fbmj\u002F2018\u002F01\u002F16\u002Fsamantha-walker-asthma-diagnosis-harnessing-the-power-of-new-technologies\u002F\">The development and routine use of smart inhalers that could passively collect data and transmit it to a patient’s GP\u003C\u002Fa>, or store it in a mobile phone for future use would enable symptoms to be monitored over time. Future inhalers might even alert users to potential environmental triggers. The FDA approved the first smart inhaler, Teva&#8217;s ProAir Digihaler, at the beginning of 2019. It has a sensor that tracks when it is used in real-time and syncs this data to a mobile app. The ProAir Digihaler can determine how well the patient uses it, as the sensor measures a breath actuation and sees how well a patient inhales, giving them a rating.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>During the management of asthma, the measurement of lung capacity to monitor breathing irregularities through peak flow meters is necessary. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsmartpeakflow.com\u002F\">Smart Peak Flow\u003C\u002Fa> offers a small, pocket-sized add-on to every smartphone that allows users to track their peak flow on their phones. The data can be shared with the pulmonologist, thus makes it easier to discuss the management of asthma. We tested it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fasthma-pocket-tech-in-the-fighting-ring\">here\u003C\u002Fa> comparing with another similar device, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Faiocare.com\u002Fpatient\u002F\">AioCare\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailymail.co.uk\u002Fhealth\u002Farticle-6704817\u002FSticker-asthmatics-wear-skin-warns-attack-looming.html\">A team of researchers at the University of California experimented with a sticker asthmatics can wear on their skin\u003C\u002Fa>, which could warn when an attack is looming. When worn on the abdomen, sensors in the sticker measure the strain being put on a user&#8217;s rib cage. Moreover, in the future, artificial intelligence could help a lot in streamlining administrative practices and managing medical processes. For example, 97% of healthcare invoices in the Netherlands are digital containing data regarding the treatment, the doctor, and the hospital. These invoices could be easily retrieved. A local company, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zorgprismapubliek.nl\u002F\">Zorgprisma Publiek\u003C\u002Fa>, analyzes the invoices and uses IBM Watson in the cloud to mine the data. They can tell if a doctor, clinic or hospital makes mistakes repetitively in treating a certain type of condition in order to help them improve and avoid unnecessary hospitalizations of patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Nevertheless,\nstriving for sustainability doesn’t stop at optimizing processes. Medical\nfacilities, doctors, and patients could all make efforts to use sustainable\nenergy sources, as there are already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsustainability-in-healthcare\">excellent alternatives powered by solar energy\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. For example, Botswana-based\n\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.deaftronics.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Deaftronics\u003C\u002Fa>\nhas manufactured the first solar-powered hearing aid unit, Solar Ear –\nharnessing the energy of the Sun also for tackling the lack of medical\nspecialists in the African country. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although experiments have produced the introduction\nof a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Facademic.oup.com\u002Fijlct\u002Farticle\u002F13\u002F4\u002F320\u002F5076208\">solar toothbrush without the need to use toothpaste\u003C\u002Fa>, as well as a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.engineeringforchange.org\u002Fnews\u002Ften-medical-devices-for-off-grid-healthcare\u002F\">solar blood pressure monitor\u003C\u002Fa>, a truly fascinating, futuristic, and extremely\nuseful innovation in the area was presented by Swiss researchers two years ago.\nThey showed that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F877351\u002Fstudy-tiny-solar-panels-under-your-skin-are-ready-to-power-the-next-generation-of-pacemakers-and-medical-devices\u002F\">postage-stamp size panels implanted under the skin\u003C\u002Fa> could theoretically generate enough electricity to\nrun pacemakers and similar devices that now require bulky batteries. Imagine\nthat in the future, we might be able to wear \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-tattoos-make-healthcare-more-invisible\">solar-powered digital tattoos\u003C\u002Fa> and send tiny nanobots into our bloodstream to\ncollect information and send it to the doctor – all through tiny solar panel\ntechnology and other amazing nanotechnological innovations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Until then, we’ll stay with our pocket-sized wearables and health sensors.
