Is there a chance of improving our attitude towards clothing items by adding more value, new functionality?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003C!--more-->\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From Burda to the unsustainable downward spiral of fast fashion\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When our grandmothers in the 1950s wanted to dress according to the latest trend, they bought the Burda Magazine alongside some fabric and used the family sewing machine to create their own couture. The scarcity of financial means urged them to create lasting pieces, two seasonal cycles of fashion allowed them to stylishly wear their beloved pieces for years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Now, without longing for past decades, we have to ask: \u003Cstrong>when was the last time you sewed a button on your shirt or brought your shoes to the shoe repairman?\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Flifeandstyle\u002F2011\u002Fmay\u002F08\u002Ffast-fashion-death-for-planet\" target=\"_blank\">The Guardian’s Lucy Siegle recounted a story\u003C\u002Fa> about how a fashion industry commentator once watched in horror as a customer emerged with six or seven brown paper bags full of clothes from a fast fashion store. The young woman walked through the busy street in the rain when one of her bags broke – and she just walked away without even thinking about bending down for the clothes. The longevity of our garments has shrunk at an astonishing rate: compared to wearing clothes for decades, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ffashion\u002F2017\u002Fjul\u002F29\u002Ffashion-must-fight-scourge-dumped-clothing-landfill\" target=\"_blank\">clothes are worn at most for 3.3 years before being discarded\u003C\u002Fa>.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Researchers estimated that five percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the apparel sector\u003C\u002Fstrong> – in other words, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffashionista.com\u002F2017\u002F09\u002Ffashion-industry-greenhouse-gas-climate-change-sustainability\" target=\"_blank\">the creation of clothing results in environmental pollution equaling that of all of Russia\u003C\u002Fa>. Parallel to that phenomenon, huge amounts of textile waste are generated at every level of production and consumption. Hundreds of tons of garments are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ffashion\u002F2017\u002Fjul\u002F29\u002Ffashion-must-fight-scourge-dumped-clothing-landfill\" target=\"_blank\">set on fire in the outskirts of the low-wage textile hotspot, Dhaka, where the pollution level is beyond comprehension\u003C\u002Fa>. That means they are trying to avoid the use of traditional materials, such as leather or cotton, and replace them\u003Cstrong> with lab-grown, synthetic materials created through bioprinting, for example.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The New Jersey-based company, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.modernmeadow.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Modern Meadow\u003C\u002Fa>, grows animal skin in a lab as bioprinted cell culture. Recently, the biotechnology start-up, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fboltthreads.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Bolt Threads\u003C\u002Fa> \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fvegnews.com\u002F2018\u002F9\u002Fbiotech-brand-debuts-vegan-mushroom-leather-handbag\" target=\"_blank\">debuted a handbag made from its proprietary vegan material, Mylo\u003C\u002Fa>. Components are made with mycelium—mushroom root systems that the company grows into 3D structures on a bed of corn stalks before compressing the mass into durable, animal-free leather.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The venture also \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmade-to-measure-suits.bgfashion.net\u002Farticle\u002F15680\u002F55\u002FHow-Biotech-is-revolutionizing-Material-Innovation#popup2\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with Stella McCartney to design a modern take on the shift dress made of synthetic spider silk\u003C\u002Fa> from proteins produced through fermentation using yeast, water, and sugar. We will list some of the most interesting examples here, but also have to note that these have not become mainstream, nor seem to have gained real momentum &#8211; so far.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>&#8220;Engineers at the University of British Columbia&nbsp;created a flexible waterproof battery that is durable enough to undergo multiple wash cycles. The battery is so pliant that it can still function when stretched to double its original length. It’s made of low-cost materials, making it potentially highly suited for wearable health monitoring technology, such as items of clothing, patches, or watches that monitor vital signs.&#8221; &#8211; \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.linkedin.com\u002Fcompany\u002Fmedgadget\u002F\">Medgadget\u003C\u002Fa> reported.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Researchers at the University of Helsinki in Finland\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medgadget.com\u002F2022\u002F06\u002Fsmart-jumpsuit-tracks-motor-development-in-children.html\" target=\"_blank\"> created a smart jumpsuit \u003C\u002Fa>that can track toddler movements using a series of motion sensors.&nbsp;The suit required substantial breakthroughs in machine learning to train computer algorithms to recognize specific movements that point to possible underlying medical conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dezeen.com\u002F2018\u002F07\u002F30\u002Ftommy-hilfiger-xplore-smart-clothing-fashion\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Hilfiger has released a range of &#8220;smart clothing&#8221;\u003C\u002Fa> containing inbuilt Bluetooth chips that allow the item&#8217;s movements to be tracked and users to be rewarded for wearing them. In 2014, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wareable.com\u002Ffashion\u002Fralph-lauren-to-introduce-smart-shirt-at-us-open\" target=\"_blank\">Ralph Lauren debuted its smart shirt\u003C\u002Fa> measuring heart rate and breathing during the US Open.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In May 2015, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Flevistrauss.com\u002Funzipped-blog\u002F2015\u002F05\u002Fgoogle-levis-project-jacquard\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google started collaborating with Levi’s\u003C\u002Fa> to create fibretronic materials. For example, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencefriday.com\u002Fsegments\u002Fwearable-superpowers-for-earth-and-beyond\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">technologists at the University of Minnesota have designed real-life gloves\u003C\u002Fa> that tingle when they sense nearby objects. They use an ultrasonic sensor to detect what firefighters cannot, allowing them to “see” through the smoke. Or, material scientist \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.junkamei.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Jun Kamei\u003C\u002Fa> has created \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.junkamei.com\u002Famphibio\" target=\"_blank\">Amphibio\u003C\u002Fa>, a 3D-printed garment that functions as a giant gill, allowing the wearer to pull oxygen from an aqueous environment and breathe it. He is already a giant leap ahead of us – saving humanity from rising sea levels as a consequence of global warming. Mind-blowing, isn’t it? OMSignal’s smart bra, the OMbra, records distances run, breathing rates and heart rate, and even tells you when you&#8217;ve recovered enough to head back to the gym. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wareable.com\u002Fsmart-clothing\u002Fsensorias-smart-sock-20-price-specs-release-date-3694\" target=\"_blank\">Sensoria&#8217;s second-gen connected socks\u003C\u002Fa> want you to have the best run possible by offering data on your speed, distance, time as well as style.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>All the while, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhealth-trackers-are-changing-the-experience-of-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\">Owlet Care\u003C\u002Fa> thinks about the smallest and cutest creatures. As one of the 85 million Europeans suffering from cardiovascular disease, he frequently had to get into contact with the medical device. He actually found the traditional ECG Holter fascinating. Well, in a sense how frequently it is used on patients in hospital environments despite being really not patient-friendly. You could and would not use the traditional ECG Holter at home. It&#8217;s too complicated to apply, too „hospital-like” and too costly. Moreover, it does not provide the best possible measurements either.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What would a genuine designer do? Yes, of course, he started to redesign it. He imagined a functional yet fun and patient-friendly ECG Holter. He faced the challenge of using a great technology in minimum size and applying some kind of patches onto various skin types for a longer period of time. It perfectly fits the recent trend of redesigning traditional healthcare devices to make them more patient-friendly and ready to use at home. Just look at how much weight the ECG device lost during its evolution! The invention of the ECG is usually associated with Dutch physician, Willem Einthoven, who first coined the term „electrocardiogram” and built a new kind of string galvanometer with very high sensitivity. His device weighed 600 pounds. Later, Frank Sanborn’s company produced the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fecglibrary.com\u002Fecghist.html\">first portable version of the electrocardiogram\u003C\u002Fa>&nbsp;in 1928. It weighed 50 pounds and was powered by a 6-volt automobile battery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And now, peek at the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbig-kardia-review-evolution-digital-health\u002F\">Kardia Alivecor ECG devices\u003C\u002Fa>! They fit into&nbsp;our palms and weigh less than one pound. Gadgets have become smaller, more comfortable and more efficient. And there was even an evolution of the various versions of Alivecor devices! For example, the first version of their FDA-approved, medical-grade ECG recorder only works on the iPhone 5; the next generation was already thinner and more sophisticated. The latest version is only a little bit thicker than your credit card. While in the past, the ultimate goal of medical tools was to somehow measure health parameters and vital signs and to somehow record measurements, currently, the question is how to measure more accurately and easier. The evolution of digital health and the appearance of design in producing medical devices confirm these changes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Beyond the ECG, many more diagnostic devices turn into palm-sized gadgets. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.viatomtech.com\u002Fcheckme-pro\">Viatom Checkme Pro\u003C\u002Fa>, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffirst-medical-tricorder-viatom-checkme-pro-review\u002F\">closest device to the medical tricorder\u003C\u002Fa> is amazingly multifaceted. It functions as a health tracker, records your ECG, measures your blood oxygen saturation, the number of steps you take a day, serves as a thermometer, a blood pressure tracker, sleep monitor and a reminder while it is portable, very light, hand-held and transfers data wirelessly. And it&#8217;s only a bit bigger than your phone. Especially in the case of health trackers and wearables, which aim to become an organic part of everyday life. It is not enough to provide some measurements, the results should be packaged into a user-friendly gadget with attractive appearance or into a frequently used personal item. Ádám Miklósi also thinks that \u003Cem>in most cases, patients stop using a certain gadget because most of the appliances are designed to get the results, instead of being designed for the users.\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Luckily, there are already many companies who get things right. Moreover, certain wearables aim to function as a fashion statement. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmisfit.com\u002F\">Misfit\u003C\u002Fa> offers elegant smartwatches, fitness trackers – and even a Swarovski activity crystal, which could not be further away from the traditional notions of gadgets used for health purposes. Moreover, design could also turn stigmatizing medical devices into something „cool”. Julia Marian Cunha&nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.yankodesign.com\u002F2017\u002F11\u002F07\u002Fsmashing-assistive-tech-stigma\u002F\">created a hearing aid, OH,\u003C\u002Fa> that is both a fashion accessory – making the wearer confident and stylish at the same time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.mc10inc.com\u002F\">MC10\u003C\u002Fa> makes microchips that can measure numerous vital signs simultaneously while it basically functions as a digital tattoo due to its flexible material. It is interesting that Imogen Adams, a student in product design engineering at Brunel University – and not someone from the medical community &#8211; designed it. Thus, a pleasant environment with agreeable objects can positively affect the healing process, can shorten the time of recovery – and reduce the costs of care. This is certainly not a new discovery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In 1859, Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC2996524\u002F#b6\">recognized the importance of art in medicine and raised issues that are still highly relevant today\u003C\u002Fa>. In \u003Cem>Notes on Nursing\u003C\u002Fem>, she wrote „The effect of beautiful objects, the variety of objects and especially brilliance of color is hardly at all appreciated … Little as we know about the way in which we are affected by form, by color and light, we do know this, that they have an actual physical effect. Variety of form and brilliance of color in the objects presented to patients are actual means of recovery”.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And although it has been recognized early that aesthetics, colors, light or soothing sounds are part of the healing process, it took a long time until it appeared in practice. For example,&nbsp;\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-examples-of-gamification-in-healthcare\u002F\">Gamification\u003C\u002Fa> in the form of apps, special toys or walls painted with bright colors, green spaces to walk around, all serve this purpose. Moreover, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffuture-3d-printing-drugs-pharmacies-closer-think\u002F\">scientists from University College of London are experimenting with 3D printing drugs\u003C\u002Fa> in odd shapes; such as dinosaurs or octopuses in order to make it easier for kids to take pills. Ádám Miklósi mentioned the MRI appliance for children designed by Doug Dietz for GE. The whole machine and the room are painted as a pirate ship, the assistant acts like a pirate and tells a story to the kids under examination, he explained.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The future will bring more and more solutions where designers and healthcare professionals work together.
