In May, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F5\u002F10\u002F22395472\u002Fcovid-vaccine-pfizer-kid-ages-12-15-fda-authorization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">following new evidence\u003C\u002Fa> of efficacy in children, the FDA further approved administering the Pfizer \u002F BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to children aged between 12 and 15 years. Before, only those aged 16 and up could get the vaccine but vaccinating more children will be key to achieving herd immunity and ending the pandemic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With such a promising outlook of available vaccines, in mid-May, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F5\u002F13\u002F22434645\u002Fvaccines-masks-social-distancing-cdc-covid\" target=\"_blank\">further relaxed requirements\u003C\u002Fa> for fully vaccinated people. “\u003Cem>If you were fully vaccinated, you can start doing the things that you had stopped doing because of the pandemic,\u003C\u002Fem>” CDC director Rochelle Walensky said. “\u003Cem>We have all longed for this moment, when we can get back to some sense of normalcy.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But even with such good news, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fpan-coronavirus-vaccine-variants-future-pandemics-2021-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">experts predict\u003C\u002Fa> that the novel coronavirus will still linger around for longer than we wish. They are comparing it to the Spanish flu, which is itself persisting today in the form of a descendant as the seasonal flu. The latter mutates every year and requires new shots yearly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the COVID-19 pandemic served as a wakeup call for the scientific community. In addition to the existing COVID-19 vaccines, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fnext-generation-of-covid-19-vaccines-could-be-pill-or-spray-11620034381\" target=\"_blank\">hundreds are in development\u003C\u002Fa>; including \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.raps.org\u002Fnews-and-articles\u002Fnews-articles\u002F2020\u002F3\u002Fcovid-19-vaccine-tracker\" target=\"_blank\">dozens in phase 3 trials\u003C\u002Fa>, meaning they will soon be available to the public. Also in development are therapies that could cover viral strains that aren’t even out in the wild yet; as well as those to treat patients already suffering from COVID-19 symptoms. So let’s explore what awaits us in the future for COVID-19 therapies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Broadening the scope of vaccines\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While COVID-19 vaccines rolling out protect against COVID-19 infections, their effect isn’t lifelong. Pharma companies like Pfizer and Moderna \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.webmd.com\u002Fvaccines\u002Fcovid-19-vaccine\u002Fnews\u002F20210520\u002Fcovid-boosters-likely-needed-within-year\" target=\"_blank\">said that\u003C\u002Fa> research indicates that their vaccines are effective for at least 6 months. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This suggests there might be the need for boosters. “\u003Cem>I think we will almost certainly require a booster sometime within a year or so after getting the primary [shot] because the durability of protection against coronaviruses is generally not lifelong,\u003C\u002Fem>” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.webmd.com\u002Fvaccines\u002Fcovid-19-vaccine\u002Fnews\u002F20210520\u002Fcovid-boosters-likely-needed-within-year\" target=\"_blank\">said Dr. Anthony Fauci\u003C\u002Fa>. Pharma company Novavax \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Fbusiness\u002Fhealthcare-pharmaceuticals\u002Fnovavax-combined-influenzacovid-19-vaccine-shows-promise-preclinical-study-2021-05-10\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is working on one such vaccine\u003C\u002Fa> that’s effective against both flu and COVID-19. In a pre-clinical study, they found their combined vaccine to elicit “robust responses” against influenza A and B, as well as against SARS-CoV-2. Novavax expects clinical studies of their combined vaccine to start by the end of this year.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another vaccine candidate developed by the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fpan-coronavirus-vaccine-variants-future-pandemics-2021-5\" target=\"_blank\">Duke Human Vaccine Institute\u003C\u002Fa> not only protects against SARS-CoV-2 but also covers several coronaviruses in the SARS family. When tested on rhesus monkeys, this pan-coronavirus vaccine protected the mammals from the novel coronavirus and its most concerning variants; as well as against the SARS virus behind the 2003 outbreak. Interestingly, their vaccine could also protect the monkeys against other coronaviruses circulating in bats but that haven’t mutated to infect humans (yet?).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, to properly assess the protection that the vaccine confers to humans requires more testing. But it could potentially protect against new SARS-related viruses originating from bats; even before we detect them making the jump to humans. The good news is that there’s not only one pan-coronavirus in the works but \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businessinsider.com\u002Fpan-coronavirus-vaccine-variants-future-pandemics-2021-5\" target=\"_blank\">over twenty\u003C\u002Fa> such projects.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Next-generation vaccines\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The future of COVID-19 vaccines do not only mean more options but also different modes of administration and storage. Currently, the vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna require low temperatures for storage. This can prove challenging to transport and even store by healthcare facilities. With its direct action on the respiratory tract, it could more potently reduce the risk of virus transmission by those vaccinated by it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another pharma company, Vaxart, is working on a \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fnext-generation-of-covid-19-vaccines-could-be-pill-or-spray-11620034381\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19 vaccine\u003C\u002Fa> that comes in the form of an ingestible pill. An early-stage study showed that it elicited immune responses against SARS-CoV-2.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Beyond prevention is treatment\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But wait, there’s more! Vaccination is indeed important to prevent viral infection and spread; but those already infected and suffering from debilitating symptoms also require prompt treatment. But as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.abc.net.au\u002Fnews\u002F2021-05-17\u002Fqueensland-coronavirus-antiviral-treatment-covid-19\u002F100144370\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Fauci noted\u003C\u002Fa>, even if we now have vaccines against COVID-19, direct  therapeutics are rather lacking. For now, we’ve mostly been relying on supportive measures but this could change with progress in sight.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A team of Australian and U.S. researchers have worked on an antiviral therapy that eliminated \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.abc.net.au\u002Fnews\u002F2021-05-17\u002Fqueensland-coronavirus-antiviral-treatment-covid-19\u002F100144370\" target=\"_blank\">99.9% of viral load\u003C\u002Fa> in infected mice. “\u003Cem>It allows us to treat those people who are suffering from the virus who are very sick, or those who may perhaps be in danger of being exposed to the virus, such as those in hotel quarantine,\u003C\u002Fem>” lead researcher, Professor Nigel McMillan \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.abc.net.au\u002Fnews\u002F2021-05-17\u002Fqueensland-coronavirus-antiviral-treatment-covid-19\u002F100144370\" target=\"_blank\">explained\u003C\u002Fa>. “\u003Cem>They’d be assured they won’t suffer from the disease itself.\u003C\u002Fem>“\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pfizer as well is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmontrealgazette.com\u002Fnews\u002Fworld\u002Fpfizer-is-testing-a-pill-that-if-successful-could-become-first-ever-home-cure-for-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\">testing a potential therapy\u003C\u002Fa> as an oral formulation. Their home cure solution aims to stop the virus’ replication in our respiratory tract. For you must know that there were \u003Cspan style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u003Cstrong>no corners cut\u003C\u002Fstrong> \u003C\u002Fspan>in the clinical trials and approval processes. Which countries can open up for tourism and business faster than the others. And despite the fact that vaccine distribution is indeed about money and connections (although \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F05\u002Fasia\u002Fpalau-covid-vaccine-intl-hnk\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">not in every case\u003C\u002Fa>), the governing bodies of healthcare all try to ensure the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.voanews.com\u002Fcovid-19-pandemic\u002Fwho-equitable-global-distribution-2-billion-covid-19-vaccine-doses-begin-2021\" target=\"_blank\">ethical distribution\u003C\u002Fa> of doses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on the supply chain improvements of the companies that have an approved vaccine. It seems we will have dozens of more vaccines in months – we wrote an article about \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftracking-covid-19-vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\">where to track them\u003C\u002Fa>. With the use of vaccines, we were able to avoid previously deadly illnesses, and live a longer and healthier life. Unfortunately, misinformation tends to spread more quickly than scientific papers; and as a result, outbreaks of illnesses that once have been eradicated still happen time to time.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is where communication gets into the picture. If misinformation is spreading and the people don’t get good enough answers from their government or medical association, they will not believe science – and they won’t get vaccinated. And if you have a look at the table below you’ll see which governments have done a good job so far.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ciframe src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fourworldindata.org\u002Fgrapher\u002Fcovid-vaccination-doses-per-capita?tab=chart&stackMode=absolute&time=latest&region=World\" loading=\"lazy\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 600px; border: 0px none;\">\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Having doubts ≠ stupidity\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Having doubts about new things, especially when it comes to one’s health is understandable. It’s easy to be afraid of the unknown (this is what I also say in my keynotes about artificial intelligence). But this time, we don’t have much time to be afraid. Unless we want COVID to stay with us a little longer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you worry about how the new type of mRNA vaccines work, read about them in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicalnewstoday.com\u002Farticles\u002Fhow-do-mrna-vaccines-work#What-is-different-about-mRNA-vaccines?\" target=\"_blank\">reliable resources\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you worry about the long-term consequences (which no data indicate for now after having tested the vaccine on tens of thousands of people and vaccinating already millions), you might want to wait out. But then we’ll be in lockdown for years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Lockdown for 3-5 years\u003C\u002Fstrong>?!\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I repeat: no data indicate that the vaccines will have long-term medical complications. To see in practice if that’s true, you should wait 3-5 years. During this time COVID will be with us night and day, as people will wait it out and not get vaccinated. Over time you are likely to get COVID anyway sooner or later; and that is a Russian roulette whether it just goes through you without symptoms or you get seriously ill, no matter how fit or healthy you now are. Studies that were published in international, high-level, peer-reviewed journals to make sure that other, relevant researchers could also validate the results. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The pledge we make is that we will get vaccinated with any vaccine that is approved by the FDA, WHO or the EMEA as soon as possible.
