They might have chosen somewhat different tactics, like Google investing heavily in AI with DeepMind and Verily, or Microsoft focusing on the EMR and cloud solutions, one way or another, billions of tech dollars have flown into these ventures. 2022, however, presented a new chapter: a number of major non-healthcare players decided to step in as primary care providers. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It started with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Famazon-acquire-primary-care-company-one-medical-39b\">Amazon acquiring primary care provider One Medical for $3.9 billion\u003C\u002Fa> reported in late July – apparently rendering the Amazon Care model obsolete. And the company was set to go on further and eyed another large target, Signify Health – although was eventually bid out by CVS, which \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fbrucejapsen\u002F2022\u002F09\u002F05\u002Fcvs-health-bests-amazon-rivals-for-signify-health-with-8-billion-bid\u002F?sh=695bb0f91cbd\">announced to buy Signify Health for $8 billion\u003C\u002Fa>, beating Amazon in the process. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The news was still hot when ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.vice.com\u002Fen\u002Farticle\u002Fpkgadm\u002Ftiktoks-parent-company-bought-a-bunch-of-hospitals-for-dollar15b\">coughed up some $1.5 billion\u003C\u002Fa> for China’s largest private hospital chain, Amcare Healthcare. Could tech giants just take over healthcare? The TL;DR answer is no, for sure not entirely. But they will profoundly change the landscape.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Here is a list of relevant factors you need to consider when thinking about what will happen in the next decade. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What trends allow these companies to enter healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Healthcare is becoming increasingly tech-focused. All stakeholders from medical professionals to patients use an ever-growing number of devices and solutions which rely on technologies that are delivered by major tech companies. This offers an obvious entry point for the tech firms to a formerly uncharted, albeit lucrative sector. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>What forces are against the trend? \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Healthcare is the highest-stake game of all: mistakes directly cost lives. Thus, sector regulations are the strictest possible in all facets of the spectrum. This is an environment tech companies are not used to. The rigour of the regulatory framework allows for significantly tighter room to manoeuvre around business issues. And testing of products and solutions is also not comparable to any other sector: you can’t play with people’s lives. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Thus, many subsegments have administrative entry barriers that require special licenses. For example, you can’t just start a clinical trial on humans if you have a good idea. Medicine has many such barriers, which limit what “outsiders” can do.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Can they provide primary care?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Apparently, this is a target. Several factors are in their favour: \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>They have proven their abilities to develop technologies serving healthcare purposes\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>They are able to adapt to the regulatory framework, especially if they cooperate with existing major healthcare players\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Customers are likely to vote confidence for their healthcare solutions as these companies have already earned their trust in other segments\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Diagnostics seems to be one major low-hanging fruit: it is a bottleneck in all healthcare systems, large parts of populations have no- or limited access to quality services, there is a lot of money to be made by utilising this, and it is a segment that can be easiest served by high-tech solutions\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How will the healthcare offering of tech giants merge with standard medicine? \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is possible that there will be a shift in providing diagnostics and therapies – tech companies taking a big chunk of the former – often with AI solutions, and traditional healthcare doing the latter. Tech companies entering the sector will lower the threshold for accessible diagnostics. While many can’t afford to spend $150-200 on a dermatologist consultation to check a new birthmark, they may spend a few dollars in an app to have it checked – and thus have a better chance to catch a malignant lesion in time. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These digital health offerings at the moment may be more often used by those who don’t necessarily need them, but such services will eventually become mainstream. Just as running water or electricity in your house were toys of the privileged first, they became available for pretty much everyone.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Will healthcare look at tech companies as partners or as competitors?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This is a major question, and I very much hope we’ll go the partnership route – for the best interest of all of us. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Regulating tech companies providing healthcare services will be a tricky business, lots of eyes are on FDA and the like. Looking at the company’s profile, it is not surprising that it’s aiming for the online pharmacy market.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In 2023 Amazon also entered the generative AI realm by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcaredive.com\u002Fnews\u002Famazon-generative-ai-clinical-documentation-healthscribe\u002F688996\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">launching genAI-based clinical documentation services\u003C\u002Fa>. The Amazon Web Services tool, called HealthScribe, allows providers to build clinical applications that use speech recognition and generative AI to create transcripts of patient visits. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Then it can identify key details and create summaries that can be entered into an electronic health record. According to Amazon, the tool was being previewed for two specialties: general medicine and orthopedics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, remote pharmaceutical services aren’t the only remote component of health that Amazon is looking into. It is evident that it wants to become the “real deal” in the medical community, and it certainly has some outstanding qualities to leverage on. For example, no one can be on par with Amazon’s marketing machine, sales force, and supply chain, while the sheer number of employees – more than 1.5 million people – might make rivals apprehensive of their own chances on the market. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, the convergence of Amazon’s vast data streams across sectors, including healthcare, poses significant challenges concerning patient privacy and data security, and it illustrates the old philosophical debate about the limits of corporate reach into our personal domains.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2nd place: Microsoft – silently doing Microsoft things\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With a HIT index score of 14 points, Microsoft ranks 2nd on our list.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of all participants on the list, Microsoft is probably the second least visible after only NVIDIA. However, this silence should not be mistaken for insignificance when we think about the tech future of healthcare. Microsoft has a massive advantage: a huge user base in hospitals and health practices all around the world. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In September 2020, it launched Cloud for Healthcare, a new, healthcare-centric cloud. It integrates the company’s existing services like Microsoft Teams, Azure IoT and its Healthcare Bot. Building on its traditional strength, Microsoft Cloud for Healthcare \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.microsoft.com\u002Fmea\u002Findustry\u002Fhealth\u002Fmicrosoft-cloud-for-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">started offering a $95-a-month package\u003C\u002Fa> that can help smaller practices manage health data at scale.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April 2021, Microsoft acquired AI-powered speech-technology company, Nuance. The company’s software can listen and transcribe doctor-patient conversations into organized medical notes. And of course, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fblogs.microsoft.com\u002Fblog\u002F2023\u002F08\u002F22\u002Fmicrosoft-and-epic-expand-ai-collaboration-to-accelerate-generative-ais-impact-in-healthcare-addressing-the-industrys-most-pressing-needs\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">recent announcements\u003C\u002Fa> come from the realm of generative AI. Like the cooperation with Epic, which also incorporates the use of Nuances DAX system. These new AI copilot capabilities aim to support healthcare professionals in areas like note summarization, ambient clinical documentation, improving administrative efficiency, or using real-time data to support diagnostics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Health systems using Epic’s EHR system will be able to run generative AI solutions through Microsoft’s OpenAI Azure Service. This got even clearer when, upon introducing \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fabc.xyz\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Alphabet\u003C\u002Fa>, Larry Page said that they do not intend to become a conventional company. Well, they aren’t indeed. Looking at their actions in healthcare, this is certainly true. But they really do know what people want to know more about. At a time when \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Ftechnology\u002F2019\u002F03\u002F10\u002Fgoogle-sifting-one-billion-health-questions-day\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">7% of Google searches are health-related\u003C\u002Fa> (that’s about a billion a day or 70,000 questions per minute!), the tech giant knows what to do. But all-in-all, in spite of the complex health regulations and slow cultural transformation that are going on in the field, it is sure that Google & Co. could become a significant player in the future of healthcare.
