Analysing these recent developments can give us a better idea regarding where they are focusing the efforts, and how it might shape the future path of healthcare. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>But equally, if not more, strong players in this field are pharmaceutical giants, as their resources and influence can significantly shape or alter the course of this path.\u003C\u002Fstrong> As such, we are kickstarting a new series of articles focusing on the digital health efforts of 14 global pharma companies. While those heavyweights are involved in a plethora of healthcare-related projects from vaccine development to clinical trials, we will specifically focus on digital health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the first article to the series, we will explore developments coming from pharma giants Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, Bayer and Novartis. Let’s take a closer look!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Johnson & Johnson: consumer-facing\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has been involved in the healthcare industry for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Ftech\u002Fwhy-johnson-johnson-investing-a-telehealth-startup\" target=\"_blank\">over a century\u003C\u002Fa>, these days the brand is most likely associated with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jnj.com\u002Fjohnson-johnson-covid-19-vaccine-authorized-by-u-s-fda-for-emergency-usefirst-single-shot-vaccine-in-fight-against-global-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\">the single-shot COVID-19 vaccine\u003C\u002Fa>. But its pandemic efforts extend beyond the vaccine as well. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In early 2020, the company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.prnewswire.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Fprisma-health-collaborates-with-ethicon-inc-part-of-the-johnson--johnson-medical-devices-companies-to-manufacture-and-distribute-the-vesper-ventilator-expansion-splitter-device-that-is-authorized-for-emergency-use-only-during-301035945.html\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with Prisma Health\u003C\u002Fa> for the manufacturing and distribution of the VESper Ventilator Expansion Splitter, a ventilator expansion device. A single ventilator fitted with it can provide ventilatory support for two rescuable patients until individual ventilators are available.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>J&J also explored other digital health technologies that proved to be valuable during the crisis. It \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jnj.com\u002Finnovation\u002F4-ways-johnson-johnson-advanced-healthcare-amid-the-pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">collaborated with Koa Health\u003C\u002Fa> to research the use of digital cognitive behavioral therapy for treatment-resistant major depressive disorder. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another pandemic-ready technology that the pharmaceutical giant showed interest in is telemedicine. In Q3 2020, the company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Ftech\u002Fwhy-johnson-johnson-investing-a-telehealth-startup\" target=\"_blank\">announced that it is investing\u003C\u002Fa> in direct-to-consumer telehealth company Thirty Madison. The collaboration involves a study using the Apple Watch to determine whether the device can detect atrial fibrillation earlier so as to reduce the risk of developing stroke and improve health outcomes. Paul Burton, J&J’s vice president of medical affairs, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2020\u002F02\u002F25\u002Fapple-johnson-johnson-heart-study-is-a-big-deal-for-digital-health.html\" target=\"_blank\">even told CNBC\u003C\u002Fa> that this study “\u003Cem>represents the largest randomized trial in the history of cardiovascular disease\u003C\u002Fem>.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>J&J also made moves in the clinical sphere with its surgical robotic platform \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.massdevice.com\u002Fbreaking-johnson-johnson-finally-unveils-its-new-robot-assisted-surgery-system\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">announced last November\u003C\u002Fa>. Designed with six arms and integrated into the operating table, this new system aims to provide better control and flexibility to surgeons.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Pfizer: eyeing digital therapeutics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pfizer is another pharma giant whose name is closely attached to a COVID-19 vaccine; but like its competitor J&J, it has also been venturing into the field of digital health. More specifically, it seems to have grown some interests in the emerging \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-are-digital-therapeutics\" target=\"_blank\">digital therapeutics (DTx) solutions\u003C\u002Fa>. In mid-2020, the company, in collaboration with SidekickHealth, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pharmatimes.com\u002Fnews\u002Fpfizer_links_with_sidekickhealth_for_digital_health_solution_1343312\" target=\"_blank\">launched a new digital therapeutics platform\u003C\u002Fa>. It aims to help patients with ailments like inflammatory bowel disease and arthritis gain more control over managing their condition and improve their wellbeing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pfizer announced another similar collaboration in April 2021 \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffinance.yahoo.com\u002Fnews\u002Fpfizer-collaborates-doctoroncall-improve-health-033200173.html\" target=\"_blank\">with DoctorOnCall\u003C\u002Fa> in Malaysia. The lab aims to support startups working on A.I.-based tools for personalised treatments.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Bayer: partnerships and investments\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>German pharma company Bayer is no stranger to digital health. In 2018, it partnered with appliedVR and Samsung Health to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-pain-reduction-kit-against-chronic-pain\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">develop digital pain reduction kits\u003C\u002Fa> using virtual reality technology. The focus will be on using artificial intelligence in drug discovery in the fields of cardiology and oncology. Later that year, the pharma giant \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbayer-looks-digital-partnerships-expand-efforts-cardiometabolic-care-oncology-and-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">launched its G4A Digital Health Partnership Program\u003C\u002Fa>. Through the latter, it will support both early-stage and experienced companies to develop digital health tools.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prior to this initiative, Bayer also invested in other digital health startups. For instance, in August 2020, they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fbayers-equity-investment-development-commitments-bring-nearly-100m-one-drop\" target=\"_blank\">invested in One Drop\u003C\u002Fa>, the maker of a data-driven blood glucose monitor system. With this new round of funding, this startup will expand its expertise in other areas like cardiology, oncology and women’s health. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In June 2021, the German company \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2021\u002F06\u002Fbayers-investment-arm-leads-digital-health-startups-90m-round\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">invested in yet another digital health startup\u003C\u002Fa>: Ada Health. The latter is known for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-big-symptom-checker-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">its A.I.-based symptom checker\u003C\u002Fa>. Through this investment, the two companies also plan a broader strategic partnership. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Novartis: juggling between projects and failures\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Embracing digital and data is a top priority for Novartis,” the company’s chief medical officer John Tsai \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fhow-novartis-embracing-digital-and-data-revolution\">once said\u003C\u002Fa>. The Swiss pharma giant has been walking that talk in recent years; even after its ill-fated partnership with Google to develop blood glucose level-sensing contact lenses that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-diabetes-management-8-reasons-why-we-face-extraordinary-times\">didn’t amount to a viable product\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In late 2019, it teamed up with another Big Tech company, Microsoft, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnorth-america\u002Fnovartis-taps-microsoft-new-ai-initiative-drug-discovery-development\">on an initiative\u003C\u002Fa> to use A.I. for drug discovery and development. More recently, the Swiss pharma giant partnered with a number of digital health startups. Last November, they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnovartis-teams-smartpatient-new-tool-patients-wet-macular-degeneration\">teamed up with smartpatient and the MyTherapy app\u003C\u002Fa> for a new feature to provide personalised educational material for wet macular degeneration patients and their caregivers.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fkaiku-health-joins-forces-novartis-melanoma-monitoring-and-support\">partnered with Kaiku Health\u003C\u002Fa> on a tool to assist in the remote monitoring and support network of melanoma patients. The following month, in May, it announced \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fada-health-partners-novartis-work-diagnosis-immunological-diseases\">a collaboration with Ada Health\u003C\u002Fa> to help improve the diagnosis for patients with immunological diseases and rare conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Novartis not only partnered with startups but also acquired one. In 2020, they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnovartis-acquires-digital-therapeutic-using-video-games-3d-glasses-treat-lazy-eye\">acquired Amblyotech\u003C\u002Fa>, which develops a solution to treat amblyopia, or “lazy eye”, by combining a gaming software and 3D glasses. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Like Pfizer, Novartis also expressed interest in DTx, but not with such a promising outlook. The pharma giant \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnovartis-trial-shows-no-benefits-pears-schizophrenia-app-ceo-cites-trial-irregularities\">published results of its clinical trial\u003C\u002Fa> with Pear Therapeutics’ new digital therapeutic for schizophrenia in January. For instance, one might think that ‘digital therapeutics’ and ‘digital pills’ are interchangeable terms; but they are in fact totally different digital health tools.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>While we \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-present-and-future-of-digital-pills\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">discussed digital pills in depth\u003C\u002Fa> last year, we have yet to talk about digital therapeutics. This demarcates them from \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-present-and-future-of-digital-pills\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">digital pills\u003C\u002Fa>, which are themselves physical, ingestible medications (i.e. hardware) with embedded electronic circuits.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, while DTx are software-based, they are subject to the same regulatory oversight that traditional medicines undergo. This ensures that the product is safe to use, effective as well as has clinical impact. They can also be prescribed independently or in concert with other medications or treatments in order to optimise patient outcomes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The edge of such clinically proven software is manifold. Since DTx are accessible via devices like a smartphone or tablet, they can expand access to care in underserved areas. Moreover, such a mode of care delivery, which can easily be adopted at home, forgoes any stigma tied to traditional therapies. But as with traditional medicines, the end goal of DTx is for the treatment, management or prevention of medical conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Finding digital therapeutics\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Digital therapeutics are not at a conceptual stage but are well within the production and delivery stages. In fact, DTx targeting chronic medical and mental conditions have been developed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psychiatrictimes.com\u002Fview\u002Ffrom-theory-to-real-world-practice-clinical-integration-of-digital-therapeutics\" target=\"_blank\">over the past 15 to 20 years\u003C\u002Fa>. The Digital Therapeutics Alliance even has \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Funderstanding-dtx\u002Fproduct-library\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">a product library of DTx\u003C\u002Fa>. This list can prove to be particularly important as it helps differentiate DTx that physicians can actually prescribe from unregulated apps that overpopulate online app stores.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To help separate the wheat from the chaff, the Digital Therapeutics Alliance has put forth \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F01\u002FDTA_DTx-Definition-and-Core-Principles.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">a list of ten core principles\u003C\u002Fa> for DTx. It recommends patients personalised insulin doses as well as acts as a coach in managing their diabetes. A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Fproductinsulia\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">randomised trial conducted in France\u003C\u002Fa> showed that a precursor to the software helped improve glucose control as compared with standard care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another example of DTx is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Fkaiku\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Kaiku Health\u003C\u002Fa>. The app supports cancer patients by allowing them to report potential symptoms that they might encounter; subsequently, it shares self-care instructions with them. Through Kaiku Health, patients can also message their care team. Studies \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdtxalliance.org\u002Fkaiku\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">have shown that\u003C\u002Fa> such forms of digital monitoring lead to good patient adherence and satisfaction, as well as save time by reducing in-person visits or even phone consultations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Contemplating digital concerns\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, given how DTx are wholly digital options, they carry with them \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-privacy-in-the-digital-health-era-the-medical-futurists-guide\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the plethora of relevant privacy and security issues\u003C\u002Fa>. These technologies will increasingly manipulate sensitive data and will become prey to malicious third parties. While their short-term use \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psychiatrictimes.com\u002Fview\u002Ffrom-theory-to-real-world-practice-clinical-integration-of-digital-therapeutics\" target=\"_blank\">seems to be a promising option\u003C\u002Fa> in managing chronic conditions, adherence regarding their longer-term use has yet to be explored.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such pertinent issues relating to DTx have to be appropriately addressed as they become viable alternatives for patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Will you be prescribed digital therapeutics?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These definitions, examples and relevant concerns give a clearer picture of what digital therapeutics are. Essentially, they represent a paradigm shift in how we think of medical care delivery. While we still think that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital health is a cultural transformation\u003C\u002Fa> initiated but not driven by advanced technologies, DTx will have an enormous impact on how we deliver care and practice medicine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Sure they might not currently be as widespread options as traditional therapies; but researchers already \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psychiatrictimes.com\u002Fview\u002Fthe-expanding-role-of-digital-therapeutics-in-mental-health\" target=\"_blank\">expect them to increasingly have an important role\u003C\u002Fa> to play in mental health management. And we can also expect this role to extend in other medical fields as well.
