And to have a better picture of where those interests lie, it is worth taking a look at what moves pharma giants are making in this sphere. Like its counterparts \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbig-pharma-part-one\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pfizer\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbig-pharma-part-2\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Bristol Myers Squibb\u003C\u002Fa>, BI has developed a liking for \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-are-digital-therapeutics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">digital therapeutics (DTx)\u003C\u002Fa>. In September 2020, the pharma company signed \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fboehringer-ingelheim-click-therapeutics-ink-500m-digital-therapeutics-development\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a $500 million deal with Click Therapeutics\u003C\u002Fa> for the development of a DTx solution for patients with schizophrenia. The software will help patients in adjusting their behaviour by leveraging cognitive and neurobehavioral mechanisms.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The following month, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpharmaphorum.com\u002Fnews\u002Fboehringer-yale-trial-digital-tech-in-heart-failure\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">partnered with Yale University\u003C\u002Fa> on a new trial involving a digital health technology. The latter, a smart bathroom scale, integrates cardiac monitoring and a companion app to help cardiac patients better manage their condition and improve their prospects.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And this September, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpharmaphorum.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcoalition-formed-to-represent-patient-interests-in-digital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">sponsored a new coalition\u003C\u002Fa>, the Patient Coalition for AI, Data and Digital Tech in Health. It aims to ensure that patients can access digital health services equitably.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Takeda: pushing for digital health innovation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Considering Japanese multinational pharmaceutical company Takeda’s recent moves, the big fish seems to incentivise innovative projects that can improve the healthcare ecosystem.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This March, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.shine.cn\u002Fbiz\u002Fcompany\u002F2103226334\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">launched TakedaSpark\u003C\u002Fa>, an incubation platform, in Shanghai. Through TakedaSpark, Takeda aims to boost digital health innovation through new projects and partnerships.\u003Cem> &#8220;We hope to use flexible, innovative and high-quality products to provide better treatments for patients,&#8221;\u003C\u002Fem> \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.shine.cn\u002Fbiz\u002Fcompany\u002F2103226334\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">said Sean Shan\u003C\u002Fa>, president of Takeda China. \u003Cem>&#8220;Digitalisation will be an empowering tool to expedite our overall efficiency, and it&#8217;s also crucial for how we connect with various stakeholders and collaborators.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In line with such efforts, Takeda also \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Froundup-orcha-calls-developers-create-apps-long-covid-airflow-simulation-technology\" target=\"_blank\">held its Digital Health Innovation Challenge\u003C\u002Fa> earlier this year. Winners of the challenge are able to partner with the pharma company, and also benefit from funding to help commercialise their projects. One of this year’s winners, IDUN Technologies, focuses on sleep disorders. But \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbig-pharma-part-one\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">like the former companies\u003C\u002Fa>, AstraZeneca is also eyeing digital health opportunities closely.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To that end, the pharma company has collaborated with several players in the industry lately. Last December, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fastrazeneca-partners-qureai-early-stage-diagnoses-lung-cancer\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with Quire.ai\u003C\u002Fa>, an A.I. solution provider. Through this collaboration, AstraZeneca will focus on applying A.I. solutions in developing markets to detect lung cancer at an early stage, and hence reduce associated mortality rates.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This April, AstraZeneca \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2021\u002F04\u002Fastrazeneca-lands-first-big-partner-for-digital-health-platform\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">announced a collaboration\u003C\u002Fa> with Massachusetts General Hospital. The latter will employ the drugmaker’s digital health platform for heart failure and asthma management in a real-world setting. In the same month, AstraZeneca \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnvidia-partners-astrazeneca-and-university-florida-ai-powered-drug-discovery\" target=\"_blank\">partnered with\u003C\u002Fa> NVIDIA and the University of Florida for a new drug-discovery project. The latter will use the new MegaMoIBART model that leverages NVIDIA’s A.I. drug discovery platform and a new kind of technology called transformer neural networks. According to Kimberly Powell, VP of healthcare at NVIDIA, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fnvidia-partners-astrazeneca-and-university-florida-ai-powered-drug-discovery\" target=\"_blank\">transformer neural networks could help\u003C\u002Fa> accelerate research and speed up drug discovery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AstraZeneca also announced another partnership in August \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Frenalytix-ai-and-astrazeneca-team-improve-chronic-kidney-disease-outcomes\" target=\"_blank\">with Renalytix AI\u003C\u002Fa>, an A.I.-enabled in vitro diagnostics company. With the latter’s KidneyIntelX platform, the team’s researchers will assign a risk score to chronic kidney disease patients based on their medical records. In August 2020, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fastrazeneca-taps-eko-heart-screening-initiative\" target=\"_blank\">teamed up with Eko\u003C\u002Fa> to use the latter’s digital health tools in clinical trials. Eko is itself known for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fbridge-tradition-innovation-eko-core-digital-stethoscope-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">developing smart digital stethoscopes\u003C\u002Fa>. AstraZeneca announced \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fastrazeneca-taps-alivecor-kidney-focused-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\">another similar partnership with AliveCor\u003C\u002Fa> this February. With the latter’s A.I.-enabled personal ECG devices and algorithms, the team will study new methods, non-invasive methods to manage cardiac and renal issues.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Amgen: small steps\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For American multinational biopharmaceutical company Amgen, collaborations are also key to its digital health ventures. While it has not been as aggressive in this regard as its competitors, in April, Amgen announced two new digital health collaborations.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It partnered \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fliva-healthcare-and-amgen-partner-improve-access-cardiac-rehabilitation\" target=\"_blank\">with Liva Healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>, a digital health coaching company, to develop a tele-rehabilitation solution for cardiac patients. From patient data collected remotely through digital technologies, they will study the feasibility of improving heart failure treatment with better and personalised guidelines.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Roche: leveraging its digital health acquisition\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Swiss heavyweight Roche was explicit about its interest in digital health solutions \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-mergers-and-acquisitions-2018\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relatively early on\u003C\u002Fa>. In 2017, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.roche.com\u002Fmedia\u002Freleases\u002Fmed-cor-2017-06-30.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">acquired diabetes management start-up mySugr\u003C\u002Fa>, and integrated the app to Roche’s own devices. It maintained its interest in investigating digital health tools in diabetes management in subsequent years and leveraged this key acquisition.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In April 2021, Roche \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Froches-new-mysugar-feature-lets-users-control-their-insulin-pump-virtually\" target=\"_blank\">integrated mySugr&#8217;s Logbook\u003C\u002Fa> with Nordisk&#8217;s connected insulin pens, providing patients with more insights into managing their condition. In May, it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Froches-new-mysugar-feature-lets-users-control-their-insulin-pump-virtually\" target=\"_blank\">added the new Pump Control module\u003C\u002Fa> to the mySugr app. It allows users to deliver a standard bolus remotely with their Accu-Chek Insight insulin pump. The latter device was also \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Froche-inks-deal-diabeloop-integrate-automated-insulin-delivery\" target=\"_blank\">able to integrate with the Diabeloop monitoring system\u003C\u002Fa> following a new partnership by Roche in March. As we wrote in our related article, in 2017, when Amazon received drug distribution licenses in over 10 U.S. states, the news sent traditional players in the pharmaceutical market into a frenzy. Amazon’s pharm plans further expanded when it bought startup online pharmacy PillPack for nearly $1 billion in 2018, ultimately selling over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, and its own line of OTC drugs. In the first quarter of 2020, that accounted for a substantial 47.9% share of the market. The company has been heavily leveraging the popularity of its smartwatch for its healthcare plans.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Through Apple Watch, the company has built an excellent pathway to electronic health records, too. Users can share their health data collected by the Health app directly to EMRs, like Cerner, which is already supporting this feature. The search giant has repeatedly successfully transferred its in-depth knowledge of algorithms in the field of medicine, particularly since it acquired DeepMind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>After a successful pilot in supporting cancer research, Google put its A.I. and its cloud computing expertise to use in partnerships. May 2021 HCA Healthcare and Alphabet’s Google Cloud announced a collaboration to develop algorithms to mine insights in patient records from the provider to improve efficiency and patient outcomes; and also this year the giant introduced its dermatology app supporting skin cancer monitoring and diagnosis.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google had some missteps along the way, too, from Google Glass to launching-relaunching, now shutting down again its Google Health branch. By delivering its computing know-how and the fact that most medical professionals are familiar with the way Microsoft’s computers are built and operate, the tech giant only needs to keep being good at what it already knows.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Last October, Microsoft launched Cloud for Healthcare, a new, healthcare-centric cloud. It integrates the company’s existing services like Microsoft Teams, Azure IoT and its Healthcare Bot. These tools aim to assist with collaboration among staff and carry out telemedicine consultations. In April 2021 Microsoft acquired A.I.-powered speech-technology company, Nuance. But in recent years, its glory in innovation has faded. The company tried to build a stronghold in artificial intelligence with Watson, but the program is currently scrapped, as “\u003Cem>physicians were hesitant to adopt artificial intelligence.\u003C\u002Fem>” So after having spent years developing the branch and having invested considerable resources into it, IBM abandoning these efforts altogether comes as a surprise.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In quantum computing, IBM took the lead but is in a tight race with other tech giants like Google. IBM is also trying to stay on board with being at the forefront of the use of blockchain in a medical setting, co-operating for example with Moderna, and having enterprise-level customers like the State of New York for a blockchain-secured health certificate app.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What IBM is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Trying to rebrand IBM Watson as a healthcare A.I.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>Seeing the future in quantum computing\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>IBM seems to be keeping a straightforward path with the eyes on the prize. The company does not attempt to enter fields it lacks the knowledge on, which I consider a good (and financially stable) thing. Once again, I don’t expect to have IBM hospitals or clinics, but healthcare institutions, using all IBM has to offer in federated learning, blockchain and quantum computing. The processor unit manufacturer launched its A.I. platform, Clara in 2018, designed to augment medical imaging and genomics. It followed up a year later with a toolkit for radiologists, Clara A.I., to help with the classification of images. In 2019, the tech giant also started to explore federated learning in healthcare, the privacy-focused A.I. training method.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>NVIDIA, too, thought speech recognition technology would grow in importance in the future. Their software can help transcribe and better organise information from telemedicine visits. But probably their most important added value in healthcare will be the Cambridge-1 supercomputer the company is building in the UK. The UK’s most powerful supercomputer will aid in A.I. research in healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What NVIDIA is betting on\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>Using its supercomputers and chips to improve drug design, genomics research and chatbots, among others\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>What I expect\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>NVIDIA seems incredibly focused in its approach towards healthcare. The company uses its strengths in data, machine learning and hardware manufacturing, and builds these all into its vision for healthcare, which is efficient, fast and entirely high-tech. Honestly, I can share their enthusiasm. Their weight, level of involvement, size of investment and even their approach vary, but they all make waves in healthcare. Given their background, they all focus on the technological side of medicine, and here’s the only bit I’m missing from their side: patient centricity.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>But just as healthcare is complex and requires as much technology as empathy and care, I’m sure patient focus and even involvement will inevitably come.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>For now, I am only sure that we’ll hear more about these companies in healthcare. As news of their endeavours is coming out almost every day, their steps will not go unnoticed.
