The first batch of companies, Johnson &amp; Johnson, Pfizer, Bayer and Novartis, seem to have some interest in remote healthcare solutions and DTx.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In this second article, we will explore which trends pharma giants Merck, GlaxoSmithKline, AbbVie, Sanofi and Bristol Myers Squibb are eyeing.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Merck: big tech-friendly\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A big pharma company itself, Germany’s Merck hasn’t shied from teaming up with big tech companies in recent years as it aims to make a lasting footprint in the digital health sector. In 2019, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpharmaphorum.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmerck-kgaa-signs-china-digital-health-deal-with-tencent\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Merck teamed up with China’s Tencent\u003C\u002Fa> on digital healthcare services in the country. Their initial focus was on boosting disease awareness and the accessibility of health services through digital means.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More recently in 2021, the pharma company announced that it would \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.philips.com\u002Fa-w\u002Fabout\u002Fnews\u002Farchive\u002Fstandard\u002Fnews\u002Fpress\u002F2021\u002F20210114-philips-and-merck-partner-to-advance-personalized-fertility-treatment.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">work with tech giant Philips\u003C\u002Fa> on digital tools for personalised fertility treatment. They aim to increase the chances of conception with tools like A.I.-enabled ultrasound and advanced informatics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Merck not only collaborated with tech giants but also with companies working on digital health solutions of their own. Last November, it announced \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fasia\u002Fholmusk-merck-partner-improve-treatment-outcomes-prediabetes-diabetes-patients-apac\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new project with healthcare technology company Holmusk\u003C\u002Fa> to support the treatment pathway of prediabetes and diabetes patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With Holmusk’s GlycoLeap platform, they aim to improve patients&#8217; blood glucose control and weight loss goals. Merck announced another similar collaboration in June \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercehealthcare.com\u002Fdigital-health\u002Fmerck-taps-evidation-to-use-apps-wearables-to-detect-early-stages-alzheimer-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with health data analytics company Evidation Health\u003C\u002Fa>. Back in 2018, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fcontent\u002F23andme-lands-300m-investment-gsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">invested $300 million\u003C\u002Fa> in direct-to-consumer genetic testing company 23andMe so as to leverage the startup’s seizable DNA database, but not without \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2021\u002Ffeb\u002F09\u002F23andme-dna-privacy-richard-branson-genetics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">raising privacy concerns\u003C\u002Fa>. Its more recent partnerships have been less controversial though and more geared towards healthcare A.I. endeavours.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In June, GSK and diagnostic and digital technologies developer Progentec \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicaldevice-network.com\u002Fnews\u002Fprogentec-gsk-lupus-tool\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced that they would collaborate\u003C\u002Fa> on researching new management tools for systemic lupus erythematosus; potentially with the integration of wearables, A.I. software and lupus-specific lab tests. Its other partnership formed in September \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fkings-college-london-and-gsk-collaborate-new-ai-led-cancer-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with King&#8217;s College London\u003C\u002Fa> to leverage A.I. to gain genetic insights into cancer treatment response.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another interesting project in the pipeline for GSK was announced in June. Along with Siemens and IT firm Atos, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercepharma.com\u002Fmanufacturing\u002Fafter-triumphant-vaccine-pilot-glaxosmithkline-says-sky-limit-for-digital-twins\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GSK initiated a digital twin project\u003C\u002Fa> on the manufacturing process of one of GSK&#8217;s vaccine adjuvant particles. In the same year, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mc10inc.com\u002Fpress-media\u002Fmc10-inc.-and-abbvie-collaboration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">teamed up with MC10\u003C\u002Fa> for clinical trials involving the use of the latter&#8217;s wearable health sensors with multiple sclerosis patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, well before such projects, more specifically since 2014, AbbVie has been in close collaboration with Google-backed Calico, which itself works on \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Flongevity-is-the-future-if-we-tackle-digital-health-first\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">longevity\u003C\u002Fa> and combating diseases of aging. Their partnership advanced three neurodegeneration and cancer targets into the clinic; as well as led to the development of over 20 early-stage programs. In March 2020, it teamed up with symptom checker developer Babylon to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Femea\u002Fsanofi-announces-three-month-babylon-pilot-assist-people-digestive-health-issues\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assist patients with digestive health conditions\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In September 2020, Sanofi entered another partnership with Taiwan-based digital health startup Health2Sync. In late 2019, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffitbit-bristol-myers-squibb-pfizer-collaborate-connection-cardiac-care-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">started working with Pfizer and Fitbit\u003C\u002Fa> on educational content to help Fitbit users identify their risk of atrial fibrillation.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some months later, in March 2020, BMS initiated \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.fiercebiotech.com\u002Fmedtech\u002Fbristol-myers-squibb-taps-voluntis-to-build-a-digital-cancer-companion-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new digital health partnership with Voluntis\u003C\u002Fa>, a Paris-based digital therapeutics developer. They aim to develop a smartphone app for cancer patients for remote monitoring and management of symptoms. The app’s algorithm will also supplement personalised recommendations for managing symptoms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>BMS also took some promising steps to promote patient advocacy in 2020. In June of that year, the pharma company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpharmaphorum.com\u002Fviews-analysis-digital\u002Fbms-launches-digital-advocacy-exchange-for-patient-groups-affected-by-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paired with digital health firm GRYT Health\u003C\u002Fa> for the ‘Advocacy Exchange’ virtual platform. The latter’s goal is to promote collaboration among patient advocacy organisations, policymakers and healthcare practitioners to support patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This second batch of big pharma companies that we looked at seem keen to extend their footprints in the digital health scene through multiple collaborations. This is not surprising given \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F5-things-we-learnt-about-investments-in-digital-health-new-e-book\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the financial incentives\u003C\u002Fa> that the field promises. But it is also encouraging to see some like BMS take steps towards promoting patient advocacy, which is itself a major component of the cultural transformation for effective digital health strategies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the next installment to this series of articles, we will explore the digital health developments coming from our final list of pharma companies.
