They could\nexperience great difficulties in social situations, have anxieties, fears,\nphobias, or sensory sensitivities. On the other hand, they could be on good\nterms with technologies: social stories apps can navigate them in difficult\nsituations, virtual and augmented reality can offer a safe space for them to\nexercise, and artificial intelligence helps in early detection. We scoured the\nground carefully and hereby present you the intersections of autism and digital\nhealth. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Raymond\nBabbitt’s heritage and the chronicles of autism\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“He’s\nartistic?” Charlie replies, “No, he’s autistic.” The nurse says, “I’m not\nfamiliar with that, what is the exact nature of the problem?” This is one of\nthe most heart-rending lines of ignorance from \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fcommentisfree\u002F2018\u002Fdec\u002F17\u002Frain-man-myth-autistic-people-dustin-hoffman-savant\">Rain\nMan, the iconic Hollywood movie from 1988, which put autism on the radar\u003C\u002Fa>\nof wide audiences. Until then, it was only concerned parents and specialized\nphysicians who knew about conditions connected to autistic behaviors and\nattended to it. While the portrayal of Raymond Babbitt has not been superseded in\npopularity by any other movie about autism ever since, there are significantly\nmore people catering to the special needs of individuals with autism. In recent\nyears, awareness about the conditions has grown, for example, in 2007, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.un.org\u002Fen\u002Fevents\u002Fautismday\u002F\">United Nations designated\n2 April as World Autism Awareness Day\u003C\u002Fa>, and the number of\norganizations and communities has multiplied. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nevertheless, looking at the statistics, that’s reasonable, and looking at the difficulties autistic children, adults, or their families face, even too little. \u003Cstrong>Globally, it is estimated that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.who.int\u002Fnews-room\u002Ffact-sheets\u002Fdetail\u002Fautism-spectrum-disorders\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 160 children has an autism spectrum disorder\u003C\u002Fa>, and according to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.autismspeaks.org\u002Fwhat-autism\">estimated 1 in 59 children in the United States\u003C\u002Fa> today. Behavior, communication, sociability, interaction with others are affected, however \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.autismspeaks.org\u002Fwhat-autism\">with every person to a different degree\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Some need significant support in their daily lives, while others can live quite independently. Parents of\nautistic children are in a particularly tough position as – especially in the\nfirst period after the diagnosis – they might not understand the reactions of\ntheir children or the triggers to their behavior, not to speak about having to\nhandle the reception of their kids in a wider social environment. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>While individuals on the autism spectrum might have huge problems with people and social situations, digital technologies have the potential to become their helpers\u003C\u002Fstrong>. So much so that the University of Edinburgh realized there’s a need for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fdart.ed.ac.uk\u002Fapp-evidence\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">suggestions\u003C\u002Fa> of what to look out for when judging the evidence base of a digital solution, and the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.autism.org.uk\u002F\">National Autistic Society (NAS)\u003C\u002Fa> in the UK also provides a useful guide for parents on the responsible use of technology for their children with autism. In addition, a handy online platform, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bridgingapps.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">BridgingApps\u003C\u002Fa> consolidates \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsearch.bridgingapps.org\u002Flists\u002Fe1451e26-b93e-487e-bbdf-08b069de73d2\" target=\"_blank\">nearly 100 apps\u003C\u002Fa> to choose from.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And how could apps make a difference for children and adults with autism? \u003Cstrong>One of their most useful features is that they offer a controlled and re-creatable environment for preparing for social situations. Through exercising simple life events and understanding what to expect in that particular situation and why, they can develop greater social awareness and stay safe\u003C\u002Fstrong>. There’s a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.friendshipcircle.org\u002Fblog\u002F2013\u002F02\u002F11\u002F12-computer-programs-websites-and-apps-for-making-social-stories\u002F\">swarm of such apps\u003C\u002Fa>, for instance, the social story app developed by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Ftouchautism.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">TouchAutism\u003C\u002Fa> provides a platform for parents, educators and caregivers to create personalized social stories and visual schedules to help them communicate with their children and prepare them for social situations. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In addition, apps could also become a contact point for further help. Solutions like the Brain in Hand app provides timely, personalized support to help people with autism remember activities, reduce anxiety, and feel supported. For example, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fearly-study-shows-google-glass-future-promise-treating-adhd-symptoms-autism-patients\">attention-deficit\u002Fhyperactivity\ndisorder (ADHD) symptoms in autism patients significantly decreased\u003C\u002Fa>\nafter just a short-period interaction with \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.brain-power.com\u002F\">Empowered Brain\u003C\u002Fa>,\na Google Glass-powered educational augmented reality tool, outcome of a\nclinical research trial published in JMIR Mental Health, showed. \u003Cstrong>In spite of being in an initial phase, the\nstudy shows AR’s future promise in positively impacting the lives of people\nwith autism.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>For autism patients, paying attention to social happenings could be burdening\u003C\u002Fstrong>. As a response, the team of Empowered Brain developed the Face2Face module to help direct attention. Cartoon characters will sit on people’s heads and arrows will guide the eyes to the point where the focus should be placed at a particular moment. In another game called Emotion Charades developed in partnership with \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.affectiva.com\u002F\">Affectiva\u003C\u002Fa>, an emotional artificial intelligence company, the users can identify the emotions of other persons. For example, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.thirdeye.tv\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">Third Eye NeuroTech’s\u003C\u002Fa> Blue Room immersive virtual reality (VR) technology developed by specialists at Newcastle University in the UK in tandem with the Durham-based tech firm \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fcontent\u002Fthird-eye-neurotech-and-newcastle-university-break-fresh-ground-people-autism\">allows the creation of a personalized 360-degree big-screen virtual environment around a specific fear\u003C\u002Fa> or scenarios that might debilitate the person with autism in real life. Researchers found that when eight participants were given four 20-minute sessions, five of them reported improvements in relation to their phobia six months later.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In another study from the University of California, San Francisco \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fjournals.plos.org\u002Fplosone\u002Farticle?id=10.1371\u002Fjournal.pone.0172616#abstract0\">published in PLOS One\u003C\u002Fa> shows that, in a clinical setting, games that have been developed to function as a medical device may be beneficial to children with certain cognitive impairments. The game called Project Evo developed by \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.akiliinteractive.com\u002F\">Akili Interactive Labs\u003C\u002Fa> is comprised of three tasks: perceptual discrimination, visuomotor tracking, and multitasking ability. Each task is performed simultaneously during the game, and Project Evo uses adaptive algorithms to assess differences in cognitive ability. Researchers have shown that children with Sensory Processing Disorder and ADHD improved with the help of the game. Now, Akili’s platform is used among others in a clinical trial in relation to this game and autism. This tool claims to be approximately\n89 percent accurate at predicting autism.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In\nanother example for \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fcontent\u002Fhealth-technology-company-righteye-gets-rights-digital-eye-tracking-tests-autism-parkinsons\">the\ncollaboration of big data and software for autism diagnostics\u003C\u002Fa>,\nMaryland-based \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.righteye.com\u002Fabout-us\u002Four-story\">RightEye\u003C\u002Fa> has developed a\ncloud-based eye-tracking technology system and software that aids physicians in\nquickly identifying early stages of autism in children 12 to 40 months old. The\neye tracker is attached to the bottom of a large gaming screen, which reads eye\nmovements so the software can interpret the reactions and generate an instant\nelectronic report that is sent to the physician. The innovation enables doctors\nto diagnose autism as early as possible, which helps both physicians and\nparents support autistic children more successfully.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The joint efforts in genetics and big data for autism research are also worth considering\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Autism Speaks announced in December 2014 that it will join with Google to form a groundbreaking genetics research program called \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.autismspeaks.org\u002Fscience\u002Fscience-news\u002Fautism-speaks-launches-mssng-groundbreaking-genome-sequencing-program\">MSSNG\u003C\u002Fa> (pronounced MISSING). The name emphasizes how little scientists know about the causes of autism. They could say that children and adults with autism represent a niche market without significant growth potential. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, that kind of attitude should never determine healthcare investment decisions, and we urge investors to support the development of technologies performing well in experimental cases. We also urge our followers to share technologies that could meaningfully support living with autism, as with publicity grows the chance for innovative solutions getting funded. We hope that the future will bring more and more technologies that could make the lives of people with autism disorders better and more enjoyable. That means running around for 60 minutes or washing the dishes for mom. If I do that, I can get some coins, and if I collect enough, I can watch one more episode from SpongeBob Squarepants. I like classics. My mom says if I use the Vivofit and eat vegetables, I will be healthy when I grow up. She has an age-old \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmisfit.com\u002F\">Misfit\u003C\u002Fa>, and she also counts her steps, but her tracker is black and boring. Because Christy can smile and she remembers my name and always greets me when I come from school, so I’m not alone even if my mom and dad have to work until late. Sometimes she also helps me do the dishes that I don’t like to do, but I need for collecting my virtual coins.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At the hospital, my dad has a Pepper as a receptionist. I really like Pepper, too, because he can also smile and tell me where I can find the next chocolate bar machine. My dad said that at first they were \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-36528253\">introduced in two Belgian hospitals as receptionists\u003C\u002Fa> decades ago. But once I saw an older man speaking very angrily with Pepper, and he even wanted to hit him because he wanted to get so badly to the doctor. I tried to defend Pepper and told the man that “Mister, you cannot say such things because you will hurt Pepper,” but he said to me that it’s just a robot. That made me really sad. They exist in another reality. But it’s not weird at all, we have something similar at school, too. My favorite teacher, Ms. Molly, always makes us use the goggles and that’s how she teaches history. The other day, she showed us the castle of King Arthur! That was something!
