Relieved that her workout will not trigger her asthma symptoms, she begins tracking it on her smartwatch.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Following the 40 minute run, Rita checks her \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.aafa.org\u002Fasthma\u002Fasthma-diagnosis\u002Flung-function-tests\u002Fpeak-flow-meters.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">peak flow reading\u003C\u002Fa> – or how well she exhales – with her smart, handheld peak flow monitor. This enables her to determine whether her workout caused any narrowing of her airways, which could lead to an asthma flare-up well before symptoms show. It is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fpii\u002FS0954611112003587\" target=\"_blank\">well-documented\u003C\u002Fa> that asthmatic patients experience difficulties adhering to proper inhaler techniques. Researchers found that among this patient group, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpatient.info\u002Fnews-and-features\u002Fcommon-asthma-inhaler-mistakes-to-avoid\" target=\"_blank\">nearly half\u003C\u002Fa> use their inhalers incorrectly. The Asthma UK organisation for its part reports that the inhaler technique of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpatient.info\u002Fnews-and-features\u002Fcommon-asthma-inhaler-mistakes-to-avoid\" target=\"_blank\">around 1 in 5 patients\u003C\u002Fa> hasn’t been checked by a GP or an asthma nurse in the last year.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such inadequate use of their inhaler leads to poor disease control as well as increased associated healthcare costs. If we consider that asthma affects \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cdc.gov\u002Fasthma\u002Fmost_recent_data.htm\" target=\"_blank\">over 25 million people\u003C\u002Fa> in the U.S. and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.digitalhealth.net\u002F2020\u002F10\u002Fnew-3m-fund-for-innovative-technology-to-improve-asthma-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">5.4 million people\u003C\u002Fa> in the U.K., where the condition also leads to some 70,000 hospital admissions and 1100 deaths, we can better understand the importance of proper preventive measures.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To control asthma, one needs data and quantifiable feedback about how they are doing; and this is possible through technologies patients can use. As such, asthma is well-suited for a digital health overhaul and here we’ll see how this is the case.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>No room for breathing: a field tight on digital health innovation\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As a field that deals with respiratory difficulties, research and innovation relevant to asthma similarly suffer from sufficient breathing room. The Asthma UK organisation \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.asthma.org.uk\u002Fadvice\u002Finhalers-medicines-treatments\u002Finhalers-and-spacers\u002Freliever\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reports that\u003C\u002Fa> in the U.K. only 2% of all medical research funding is channelled into studying respiratory diseases like asthma. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In its 2016 Connected Asthma report, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.digitalhealth.net\u002F2020\u002F10\u002Fnew-3m-fund-for-innovative-technology-to-improve-asthma-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the organisation further highlighted\u003C\u002Fa> the advantages that technologies like smart inhalers, health apps and remote monitoring could bring to address asthma attacks and associated symptoms. They link poorly controlled asthma to lower general health-related quality of life, as it affects various aspects from daily activities to sleep quality. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As such, properly controlling the condition can drastically improve patients’ lives. A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healtheuropa.eu\u002Fsmart-inhaler-could-improve-asthma-management\u002F105978\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">recent one\u003C\u002Fa> conducted by Northwestern University provided asthmatic patients with smart inhalers to use. The latter feature a Bluetooth sensor add-on that detects when patients use their medication and thereby share the data with physicians. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The researchers found that such smart inhalers can help improve medication adherence; as well as better assist asthmatic children in managing their condition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Inspirational tech\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Smart inhalers like the one in the study or as depicted in Rita’s case do exist commercially like the FDA-approved \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.hailie.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Hallie sensor\u003C\u002Fa>. It fits a range of existing inhalers and monitors the user’s medication use. It also allows them to share the data with their doctor. A similar alternative is the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.propellerhealth.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Propeller sensor\u003C\u002Fa>. However, there are only a few of such options available for now. However, more are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.asthma.org.uk\u002Fadvice\u002Finhalers-medicines-treatments\u002Finhalers-and-spacers\u002Fsmart-inhalers\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">under tests in clinical trials\u003C\u002Fa>, and have given promising results like the one from the recent study, we could soon see more on the market. Even those suffering from asthma are showing interest in such options. Asthma UK’s own research found that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.asthma.org.uk\u002Fadvice\u002Finhalers-medicines-treatments\u002Finhalers-and-spacers\u002Fsmart-inhalers\u002F\">around 9 in 10 asthmatic patients\u003C\u002Fa> would think of adopting a smart inhaler if the NHS made them available.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another solution depicted in the introduction, Rita’s handheld smart peak flow monitor, is also an option right now. We reviewed two such devices before, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fasthma-pocket-tech-in-the-fighting-ring\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the Smart PeakFlow and the AioCare\u003C\u002Fa>. A number of these \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pulmonologyadvisor.com\u002Fadvisor-channels\u002Fasthma-advisor-channel\u002F5-must-have-apps-for-patients-with-asthma\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">are available\u003C\u002Fa> like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fplay.google.com\u002Fstore\u002Fapps\u002Fdetails?id=com.mobilebreeze.AsthmaMD&hl=en_US&gl=US\" target=\"_blank\">AsthmaMD\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fapps.apple.com\u002Fus\u002Fapp\u002Fasthmatrack\u002Fid412530732\" target=\"_blank\">asthmaTrack\u003C\u002Fa> that enable users to log details about their asthma activity, triggers and medication use, which they can then share with their physician. Others like \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailybreathforecast.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">DailyBreath\u003C\u002Fa> take into consideration how weather and environmental conditions can influence the user’s condition, and thereby recommend preventive actions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the future, those with asthma can expect to have dedicated wearables as an option as well. The \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareoriginals.com\u002Fpersonal\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">ADAMM smart patch\u003C\u002Fa> is one such wearable that monitors symptoms like cough, respiration rate and presence of wheeze. Whenever these deviate from the individual norm, the wearable vibrates to indicate the user of the deviation; and it even sends a text notification to a designated person. The device is said to be “coming soon”, but we can see its potential for adoption.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Until recently, asthma care was rather lacking in digital health options. But with such options on the horizon, this trend seems to be on track to change for the better. It measures peak flow, which essentially indicates how fast you are able to exhale, and based on the score, it \u003Cstrong>can be indicative of asthma\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Priced at €49, \u003Cstrong>it can be used by both patients and clinicians anywhere with a compatible phone\u003C\u002Fstrong>. No need for waiting times at the doctor’s office or to travel to the nearest pulmonology center. It has \u003Cstrong>even been adopted for clinical research\u003C\u002Fstrong> by some universities and companies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Coming from Poland, we have AioCare. \u003Cstrong>Rather than settling for being a single sensor, this device aims to be the Swiss Army knife for respiratory conditions\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Not only does it measure peak flow like Smart Peakflow, but it also comes with a heart rate sensor and a mini spirometer. The AioCare \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Faiocare.com\u002Fic-granted\u002F\">was recently granted the IC Certificate\u003C\u002Fa>, meeting all safety requirements of ISED (Canada), and is a class IIa medical device (MDD), certified by the notified body, TUV Nord. This small, cylindrical, almost cute device plugs in through your phone’s headphone jack (obviously not for you, phone owners without this once-beloved relic) and\u003Cstrong> it is just a plug-and-play affair once you have downloaded the companion app\u003C\u002Fstrong> and set up your profile.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If your headphone jack is at the bottom of your device, you will have to enable screen rotation so that the Smart Peak Flow faces up because the device \u003Cstrong>requires light exposure in order to function\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003Cstrong>This is the only inconvenience that I found while using the gadget, but it can easily be overcome \u003C\u002Fstrong>as explained above.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The companion app is also very well designed, allowing you to set reminders to use the device at specific times every day, and it\u003Cstrong> even packs some gamifying twists to take care of your health.\u003C\u002Fstrong> For example, it has a comparison chart, your personal best reading, and even achievement badges to keep you motivated.\u003Cstrong> As a gamer myself, I commend this incentive to make a traditionally boring medical check more fun and engaging\u003C\u002Fstrong>. This cylindrical-shaped device is quite bulky, so it \u003Cstrong>surely won’t win any design awards\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In addition, rather than being pocketable, it is more of a portable device that you can fit in your bag, not in your pocket. But let’s see whether this is a compromise worth it. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AioCare is a device that not only\nmeasures your peak flow but it also functions as a small spirometer, checking\nyour lung functions and providing detailed values via its app. It also measures\nyour heart rate through its embedded sensor, akin to the ones you will find on\nsmartwatches. While feature-rich in theory, in practice the AioCare requires\nsome… khmm… practice… \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For one, the \u003Cstrong>instructions are not so well-detailed\u003C\u002Fstrong> and taking readings will need some practice to get used to. Another issue is that when using the spirometer, the device has to be held horizontally or else measurements won’t be read properly – again, this \u003Cstrong>takes some practice\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Lastly, the heart rate sensor is quite picky, not taking measurements if you are pressing too hard with your finger while recording a reading.
