One of the latest trends of interest to governments is the immunity passport, or some certified methods to ensure someone has antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in order to move around.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We have already discussed scenarios about \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhen-and-how-will-covid-19-end\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">how and when the pandemic will end\u003C\u002Fa>, but we’ve also analyzed the ways that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Flife-after-covid-19-what-will-change\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">life will drastically change\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Cstrong>One of the major changes we could experience is the introduction of an immunity passport. \u003C\u002Fstrong>This new health document is gaining attention as a means to slowly and safely get things back to “normal”; or what we will consider normal post-COVID-19.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, despite being attractive, experts dispute its efficacy. Others are pointing out that such a document will only highlight inequality issues. Some are even evoking similarities from horrendous historical events.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So what to make out of this so-called immunity passport? Let’s see where the potential next travel document stands as of now, how effective it can be and its digital health aspects.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What is an immunity passport?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This document will certify that someone is immune to SARS-CoV-2, by performing an antibody test and a virus test. The former will check whether the person has had a previous encounter with the virus and their immune system responded accordingly by producing antibodies. The latter will check if there’s any active infection going on, with the virus still present in the person. The person will get an immunity pass if the antibody test is positive (competent immune response) and a negative virus test (no longer carrying the virus).\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Once issued, this document could be a requirement to allow the holder to go back to work, travel or, like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F1838764\u002Fis-it-too-soon-for-immunity-passports\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">a recent Quartz article\u003C\u002Fa> puts it, “participate in society”. UK-based Bizagi released \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.coronapass.org\u002Fhome\" target=\"_blank\">CoronaPass\u003C\u002Fa>, an app that stores the user’s immune status data obtained from a healthcare authority. It presents a QR code that an official can then scan to check the user’s immunity status. This can limit contact with other forms of an immunity certificate like a hard copy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, \u003Cstrong>privacy issues come to mind with apps dealing with such sensitive data\u003C\u002Fstrong>. According to Gustavo Gómez, Bizagi ’s CEO, the company is HIPAA-compliant. They only store \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F1838764\u002Fis-it-too-soon-for-immunity-passports\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the immune status\u003C\u002Fa> of patients in an encrypted database. This data will only be accessible to governments or companies with access to the “requesting” side of the app. But what about other competitors which will sprout if demand arises? This is the approach of Vottun, a company specializing in the certification and traceability of data on the blockchain. The company’s CEO, Rohan Hall, explained that their immunity passport “can be verified at any time using cryptography by any mobile phone that can read a QR code”. They have already started to roll out their solution at the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fes.cointelegraph.com\u002Fnews\u002Fspain-pwc-implements-the-use-of-blockchain-with-a-digital-health-passport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">PwC firm in Spain\u003C\u002Fa>. In the U.S., they’ve had ”early conversations” with the CDC and Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcointelegraph.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcontroversial-blockchain-immunity-passport-could-get-you-back-to-work\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">according to Cointelegraph\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nonetheless, this concept raises further questions. Residents in China are questioning about leaks and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.msn.com\u002Fen-us\u002Fnews\u002Fworld\u002Fchina-is-fighting-the-coronavirus-with-a-digital-qr-code-heres-how-it-works\u002Far-BB12HctC\" target=\"_blank\">how else such data might be used\u003C\u002Fa>. Others are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcointelegraph.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcontroversial-blockchain-immunity-passport-could-get-you-back-to-work\" target=\"_blank\">drawing comparisons\u003C\u002Fa> with the need of an immunity pass to German soldiers demanding papers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Is immunity passport the solution?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are several issues pertaining to the validity of an immunity passport. First off, COVID-19 is caused by a new virus; \u003Cstrong>new virus, new problems\u003C\u002Fstrong>, as you can probably attest yourself. The outbreak has been ongoing for a couple of months and we don’t have a definite answer about \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.scientificamerican.com\u002Farticle\u002Fwhat-immunity-to-covid-19-really-means\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">how long immunity against the virus lasts\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We could get insights by analyzing other members of the coronavirus family, of which SARS-CoV-2 is a member. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC2851497\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">A study showed\u003C\u002Fa> that immunity against SARS lasts an average of two years. But there \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Farticle\u002Fus-health-coronavirus-southkorea-idUSKCN21V0JQ\" target=\"_blank\">have been reports\u003C\u002Fa> of some recovered patients already testing positive again for COVID-19; although some could be attributed to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqz.com\u002F1837798\u002Fwhy-some-covid-19-patients-might-have-tested-positive-twice\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">testing errors\u003C\u002Fa>. If someone is infected with the virus but their body hasn’t yet developed the antibodies the test checks, then the person will miss their immunity passport chance. Moreover, having antibodies can avert sickness but might not protect from an infection altogether. Again due to the novelty of the contagion, scientists \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fd41586-020-01115-z\" target=\"_blank\">don’t have enough data\u003C\u002Fa> on the body’s immune responses for conclusive answers.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On a purely managerial perspective, an app with one’s immune status will prove to be a herculean task to control. To get a considerable chunk of society to use this software will be challenging. Only big tech companies like Facebook or Google have the resources and established user base to effectively implement it on such short notice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>When tests need testing\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The issue with testing for immunity might very well be the tests themselves. Their accuracy needs to be verified via trials but given the speed of COVID-19’s spread, this has not been possible. \u003Cstrong>This has resulted in unusable tests, \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fapr\u002F11\u002Freveal-cost-of-35m-unusable-covid-19-tests-health-chiefs-told\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u003Cstrong>like the 3.5 million ones\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> that the U.K. government ordered.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Additionally, even if highly accurate tests are developed and tested, we are bound to see cases of false positives (people incorrectly identified as immune) and false negatives (people incorrectly identified as not immune). \u003Cstrong>All it needs for a second outbreak is one infected individual. \u003C\u002Fstrong>“Imagine the psychological state of a person who thought they were in the all clear and has gone back to work in a care home and ended up killing several people,” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.co.uk\u002Farticle\u002Fcoronavirus-immunity-passports\" target=\"_blank\">said Susan Michie\u003C\u002Fa>, a professor of health psychology at University College London, who is also a member of the scientific group advising the U.K. government’s response to Covid-19. A WHO report in late April showed that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fsociety\u002F2020\u002Fapr\u002F20\u002Fstudies-suggest-very-few-have-had-covid-19-without-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">\u003Cstrong>only a small fraction of the population\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong>, as few as 2% or 3%, have the antibodies\u003C\u002Fstrong> to show a past infection with SARS-CoV-2. Only those privileged few will be allowed to go out? What about those who cannot afford to get tested?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“In an effort to return to work, or allow their children back to school, will the promise of an immunity passport make people behave less responsibly, and risk infection, in order to end up with a positive antibody test?” \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.france24.com\u002Fen\u002F20200416-grave-concerns-about-covid-19-immunity-passports\" target=\"_blank\">questioned Claire Standley\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While people are struggling to make the ends meet during a lockdown, if the only way to earn a living is with a pass, \u003Cstrong>some might want to expose themselves to the virus\u003C\u002Fstrong> so as to gain immunity. It could even sprout the need for forged immunity passports and a thriving black market. This will mean travelling to other countries under an immunity passport requirement might require other tests or apps validated by that country. Part of its success is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fcoronavirus-south-koreas-success-in-controlling-disease-is-due-to-its-acceptance-of-surveillance-134068\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"thanks to its aggressive contact tracing (opens in a new tab)\">thanks to its aggressive contact tracing\u003C\u002Fa> which involved tracking bank transactions, CCTV footage and phone use.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The reasoning behind deploying such intrusive techniques is as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fscience.sciencemag.org\u002Fcontent\u002Fearly\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F09\u002Fscience.abb6936\" target=\"_blank\">a recent paper from the University of Oxford\u003C\u002Fa> concluded. It reads that the “viral spread is too fast to be contained by manual contact tracing, but could be controlled if this process was faster, more efficient and happened at scale”. Those issued with one have to connect it to their phone via Bluetooth all the time to ensure that they remain in isolation, which is then verified via GPS data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the U.S., a controversial company Clearview AI, which made a facial recognition data database from social media pictures, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fvalue-ethics-using-phone-data-monitor-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">is pitching its platform\u003C\u002Fa> for the government to track the disease.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We’ve seen the case in South Korea, but more than to track the disease’s spread, it exposed embarrassing \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F06\u002Fmore-scary-than-coronavirus-south-koreas-health-alerts-expose-private-lives\" target=\"_blank\">private information and led to rumor-mongering\u003C\u002Fa>. As other countries adopt such strategies, we will understandably witness increasing complaints about privacy violation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Is this the end of privacy?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the speed of COVID-19’s spread, traditional tracing methods won’t make the cut. As such, it’s understandable that we are asked to compromise between helping reduce transmission and preserving some privacy. They can subsequently see a list of places this particular person visited prior to a positive virus test. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This method identified a man returning from China with his secretary, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F06\u002Fmore-scary-than-coronavirus-south-koreas-health-alerts-expose-private-lives\" target=\"_blank\">leading to speculations\u003C\u002Fa> that they were having an affair and that the secretary underwent plastic surgery. \u003Cstrong>That’s one of the many personal details laid bare and which will continue popping up as long as such tracking measures are in place.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How long will this remain in place?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyreview.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F12\u002F999186\u002Fcovid-19-contact-tracing-surveillance-data-privacy-anonymity\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">recent article from MIT Technology Review\u003C\u002Fa> argues that “much of what we build for this pandemic should have a sunset clause—in particular when it comes to the private, intimate, and community data we might collect.” Ideally, this should hold true. We might never have conclusive answers for these questions, but the good news is that there are alternatives.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What about a privacy-friendly alternative?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Yes, privacy-preserving solutions are in the works.
