It can identify emotions by measuring micro-expressions that are too fast and subtle for a human eye to capture and is used in myriad areas of life from designing more efficient sales techniques to providing better healthcare.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Both of these concepts can potentially introduce a number of problematic ethical and\u002For privacy issues, but for now, we focus on the upside and on what they can deliver.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This is what ambient intelligence can do for us in the healthcare universe\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While ambient intelligence is not a new concept, (it was first set as a goal in the 1990s by \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FEli_Zelkha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eli Zelkha\u003C\u002Fa>), the required technologies only matured enough to provide practical value in recent years. Here come a few examples of what it is\u002Fcan be capable of:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Intensive care unit (ICU) use cases\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ambient intelligence can be used to closely monitor patient mobilisation, and thus help prevent ICU-acquired weaknesses. Sensors and machine learning algorithms can effortlessly keep track of the activities of patients, freeing up time and mental stress for healthcare personnel.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another potential use case is keeping track of proper compliance with hand hygiene protocols, promising better control over hospital infections. AI turning off non-essential alerts in an emergency setting also belongs here: getting rid of all the beeps that don’t require their attention, alarm fatigue of ICU personnel can be successfully reduced &#8211; which in turn generates better patient outcomes for meaningful alerts.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use cases in the operating room\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Ambient intelligence solutions can be used to keep track of surgical count, preventing objects &#8211; sponges, needles, instruments &#8211; from being accidentally retained inside the patients and thus significantly lowering post-operative complications.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These solutions can also be capable of assessing surgical skills, potentially leading to better training and better feedback for practising professionals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use cases in general medical practice\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A system built using deep learning models and various sensors and devices, such as microphones can assist medical professionals with administration, performing tasks similar to a medical scribe. In theory, various sensors and algorithms can be used to keep track of a number of vital signs. They could create a preliminary report of the basics before the patient actually enters the doctor’s surgery.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>An exciting application of ambient intelligence is to use cameras, depth sensors (etc) to measure the gait patterns of patients in a “natural” environment (eg: a room or corridor), without the need of attaching sensors to the patients. Accurate gait analysis could improve the health outcome of patients in many cases, from earlier Parkinson’s detection to the correct assessment of postoperative health in several conditions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use cases in elderly care facilities and at home\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As mentioned above, fall prevention is a prime example of using ambient intelligence in elderly care. With cameras, sensors and algorithms it is possible to accurately and automatically track the movement and activity patterns of patients, easing the mental burden of patients, healthcare professionals and relatives. These systems alert caregivers in case they detect a risk of fall or a fall, prolonged inactivity, or lack of movement in a position that is not “natural”, like a patient sitting on the floor instead of the chair or the bed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Contactless ambient sensors can also be used to assess activities of daily living of an individual &#8211; activities like eating, dressing up or taking a shower. These are critical factors to the independence and well-being of a person, but typically they are not tracked very reliably &#8211; as monitoring mostly relies on self-reports and\u002For infrequent personal checks. If one’s surroundings were to track these automatically, timely intervention could slow the functional decline of individuals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What emotion AI can do for us\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Detecting subtle emotional states and changes can offer valuable meta-information in the healthcare setting.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\u003Cli>Emotion AI can monitor non-verbal cues in a remote healthcare appointment, such as video calls, giving more information to doctors.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>It can help autistic people to interpret others’ feelings, and thus improve their social skills. With emotion AI, they are able to better understand the emotional condition of those with whom they are communicating.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>It can monitor waiting patients for signs of discomfort to determine the ones in need of urgent care.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\n\n\n\u003Cli>Emotion AI can look for facial expressions, speech- and behavioural patterns in dementia patients, accurately predicting their emotional state. It can not only notify caregivers in advance of the situation but can also adjust the patients’ environment accordingly, like selecting the right kind of music.\u003C\u002Fli>\n\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Many aspects of both emotion AI and ambient intelligence will be a regulatory nightmare. Comprehensive regulations will be crucially important &#8211; after all, you don’t want your convenience store filled with sensors which can better determine what you will buy after the right stimuli than you yourself.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On the other hand, as the capabilities of various sensors and devices develop, both concepts will provide a growing number of healthcare applications, easing the burden and burnout of doctors and nurses, increasing patient safety, and offering better screening among others. However, most algorithms are only able to do things exceedingly well if they are trained on massive datasets. AI can only diagnose breast cancer (lung cancer, developing heart conditions, and so on) with sufficient accuracy if it is trained on large amounts of diverse data, to ensure it will lack biases.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Large amounts of diverse health data, however, are not easy to come by. They are sensitive personal info, to name the first obstacle. This, in turn, will result in algorithms that are better trained than ever before, and thus more capable to diagnose, forecast, or flag than ever before.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wearable health sensors in the form of skin patches\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Monitoring more health metrics than we used to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F101-commandments-for-companies-developing-wearable-health-trackers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with digital health devices\u003C\u002Fa> will result in better patient outcomes. The earlier we learn about a patient having atrial fibrillation, the better the chances that the development of serious conditions can be prevented.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And the best way to get more, reliable health data is to make health monitoring easier, more comfortable and more available. To achieve this, making patients the point of care will serve us well. I have seen several great examples in the past year, like the BioBeat \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fa-24-hour-skin-patch-that-monitors-blood-pressure-the-biobeat-review\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">24-hour blood pressure monitor patch\u003C\u002Fa>, which I reviewed, and the rise of wearable glucose monitors that I plan to test.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Blood draw devices in clinical trials\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdiy-blood-draw-could-patients-collect-blood-at-home\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">DIY-style blood drawing devices\u003C\u002Fa> allow patients to safely and conveniently collect liquid or dried blood samples at home, in about 10-15 minutes. While this method will be far from omnipotent for the foreseeable future, it might have its merits. The pandemic highlighted how avoiding contact with a large number of random patients can be a wise idea. Instead of having to visit a health facility multiple times, participants used DIY kits at home and mailed their samples to the lab.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Affordable vein scanners\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Phlebotomy – drawing blood of a patient – has been practised for centuries and is still one of the most commonly used invasive procedures in medicine. Although the process seems simple enough, it actually carries some risks for both patients and health workers. In fact, WHO has a 125-page guideline – summarising the “simple, but important steps” which can make phlebotomy safe.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Drawing blood from a healthy, young, well-hydrated patient is rarely a challenge to a professional. On the other hand, older, dehydrated patients with their sunken or collapsed veins might make even the most experienced phlebotomist sweat a little. I expect to see more and more of these in the coming years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Smart TVs become remote care platforms\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The concept of turning one’s TV into a remote care hub isn’t new. Back in 2012, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC3558392\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">researchers designed\u003C\u002Fa> a remote health assistance system for the elderly to use through a TV set. However, we are exploring this idea now as a major tech company has recently pushed for telehealth through TVs. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fremote-care-through-smart-television\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">In early 2022, electronics giant LG announced\u003C\u002Fa> that its smart TVs will be equipped with the remote health platform Independa.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And in just a few months (late November) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2022\u002F11\u002Flg-amwell-launch-new-healthcare-tv-kit-to-fight-burnout-and-workforce-shortages\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">came a follow-up\u003C\u002Fa>: a product called Carepoint TV Kit 200L, in beta testing now. Again, we are beginning to see how an existing device (almost everyone has a TV after all) is beginning to offer new, health-related benefits.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Emotion AI and Ambient intelligence entering the stage\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmitsloan.mit.edu\u002Fideas-made-to-matter\u002Femotion-ai-explained\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Emotion AI\u003C\u002Fa> is a kind of artificial intelligence that monitors, interprets, mimics and reacts to human emotions. It is also often called artificial emotional intelligence. Its aim is to develop algorithms that are better at reflecting our emotional states.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fnaveenjoshi\u002F2022\u002F01\u002F09\u002Fthe-myriad-applications-of-ambient-intelligence-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ambient intelligence\u003C\u002Fa> is a related concept.
