Major players in the AI space like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2024\u002F12\u002F11\u002Fgoogle-unveils-project-mariner-ai-agents-to-use-the-web-for-you\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Google\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftechcrunch.com\u002F2024\u002F10\u002F22\u002Fanthropics-new-ai-can-control-your-pc\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthropic\u003C\u002Fa> also have their AI agents in this new technological race; and it’s even expected that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.capgemini.com\u002Fus-en\u002Finsights\u002Fresearch-library\u002Fgenerative-ai-in-organizations-2024\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">over 80% of organisations\u003C\u002Fa> will integrate the technology in their midst within the next 3 years.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>So what is the hype behind AI agents? Is it just new technobabble or is it transformative technology? And what to expect from AI agents in healthcare? We address these questions and more in this article.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Are AI Agents simply AI assistants?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In simple terms, an AI agent is a tool that can perform tasks on behalf of humans.\u003C\u002Fstrong> On the surface, AI agents sound similar to AI assistants such as Siri or Google Assistant. However, AI agents rely on more complex algorithms to perform multi-stage tasks autonomously according to the user’s request. It has been trained to “see” and “interact” with on-screen features such as buttons, menus and text fields, and undertake adequate actions based on a user prompt. In healthcare, such an AI agent could run through prescriptions, identify any adverse effects based on the patient’s history, make adequate changes and order the appropriate drugs. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, the vision for true agentic systems lies beyond clicks, scrolls and text input. Current tools like Operator are still in their early stages and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fopenai.com\u002Findex\u002Fintroducing-operator\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can encounter challenges\u003C\u002Fa> with tasks such as creating slideshows or managing calendars. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedcitynews.com\u002F2025\u002F02\u002Ffour-ai-disruptions-in-2025-that-will-reshape-pharma-and-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ultimate aim\u003C\u002Fa> is likely that of truly autonomous and independent AI agents which are interoperable across systems and anticipate user needs. The technology will evolve to adopt more of these roles, and we consider their potential healthcare contributions in the next section.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What can AI Agents bring to healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even if the hype around AI agents has only recently been building up, there are already companies that offer such tools for healthcare purposes. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Innovacer has released \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Finnovaccer.com\u002Fresources\u002Fnews\u002Finnovaccer-launches-agents-of-care-to-transform-healthcare-operations-enhance-care-delivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a suite of AI agents\u003C\u002Fa> aimed at reducing administrative burden. They can automate tasks such as patient appointment booking, referral workflow management and routine patient inquiry support. Another company, Eleos, has developed an AI agent to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Feleos-secures-60m-behavioral-health-ai-agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assist in mental health sessions\u003C\u002Fa>. By running in the background, it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.businesswire.com\u002Fnews\u002Fhome\u002F20250122573635\u002Fen\u002FEleos-Raises-60M-Series-C-to-Transform-Behavioral-Health-with-AI-Agents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">provides proactive insights\u003C\u002Fa> to assist clinicians in analysing their patients and also in identifying documentation errors.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AI company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Famelia.ai\u002Fsolutions\u002Fhealthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Amelia\u003C\u002Fa> provides bespoke AI agents for healthcare that can automate tasks such as scheduling and managing appointments, patient payments and medication refills. They will be able to draw insights \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fdavidchou\u002F2025\u002F01\u002F28\u002Fhow-ai-agents-are-transforming-healthcare-with-efficiency-and-security\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from diverse data sources\u003C\u002Fa> such as past medical records, test results and medical scans. From these, advanced AI agents will further indicate potential diagnoses, recommend specific tests, book the adequate appointment, and suggest treatment pathways while taking into consideration potential allergies and side effects. They could take it one step further by guiding patients along the way with tasks such as medication and appointment reminders.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Will our healthcare experience become agentic soon?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We might be a long way from fully autonomous AI agents in healthcare as described in the previous paragraph. Instead, we are more likely to experience more contained agentic systems focused on automating repetitive, administrative tasks in the near future. These could evolve into \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fcrawl-then-walk-before-you-run-with-ai-agents-experts-recommend\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">multi-agent systems\u003C\u002Fa> where several AI agents interact with each other as they move towards more advanced, “all-in-one” agents. Moreover, deploying such tools in the healthcare space will come with a number of challenges that range from financial hurdles to ethical concerns.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“Implementing AI agents can be costly,” Deloitte’s Jim Rowan \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.zdnet.com\u002Farticle\u002Fcrawl-then-walk-before-you-run-with-ai-agents-experts-recommend\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">told ZDNET\u003C\u002Fa>, and highlighted the need for adequate data infrastructure. “These necessary systems include scalable cloud platforms, advanced data analytics tools, and robust cybersecurity measures.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Furthermore, the recent concerns brought to light by the advent of generative AI also apply to the case of AI agents. For instance, at The Wall Street Journal’s CIO Network Summit, attended by major US information-technology leaders, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fai-agents-are-everywhereand-nowhere-87e38703\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">attendees expressed concerns\u003C\u002Fa> about cybersecurity, data privacy, and the lack of reliability when it comes to AI agents.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>By having AI agents automate healthcare-related processes, clinicians will have to be ensured of the reliability of their output while also maintaining its validity with human supervision. The use of such tools should further adhere to strict data privacy regulations.
