Drug delivery technologies: lasers, skin lotions and pills\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A common way to deliver drugs is via shots, and you’ve likely had this experience at least once. Nowadays, companies and researchers have been working on innovative ways to bypass needles for this process.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One example comes from \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fflowbeams.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FlowBeams\u003C\u002Fa> which is developing non-invasive, needle-free injection technology through a handheld device. It uses a laser to locally heat the liquid, creating a micro-bubble that expands rapidly. Imagine applying your next vaccine as easily as you apply sunscreen; this development could make it a possibility!\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Instead of injections, we might also take pills thanks to developments in the oral drug delivery of injectables. Companies like \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ranitherapeutics.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rani Therapeutics\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.news-medical.net\u002Fnews\u002F20241121\u002FIngestible-capsule-releases-a-burst-of-drugs-directly-into-the-walls-of-the-GI-tract-Inspired-By-The-Jets.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Novo Nordisk\u003C\u002Fa> are developing ingestible capsules that inject drugs inside the digestive tract, eliminating the need for injections.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Blood sampling and diagnostics: tapping into bodily fluids\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Blood collection for diagnostic purposes has almost exclusively relied on needles. But companies are moving away from this approach.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>US-based \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.tassoinc.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tasso\u003C\u002Fa> has a suite of button-like patches for capillary-based blood collection. It works by pressing a button which forms a vacuum and a small blade pricks the skin surface. Blood is then drawn from capillaries with the vacuum’s effect and is collected in a small container. For example, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fqvin.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Q-Pad\u003C\u002Fa> from Qvin collects menstrual blood samples instead of venous blood draws to identify biomarkers for several conditions. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Continuous glucose monitoring is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhere-does-diabetes-technology-stand\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already moving away\u003C\u002Fa> from needles and finger pricks with skin patches like Abbott’s \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.freestyle.abbott\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Freestyle Libre\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dexcom.com\u002Fen-GB\u002Fdexcom-g7-cgm-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dexcom G7\u003C\u002Fa>.
