As blogs became the media and Instagram celebrities the thought leaders, a single post can make up the minds of millions of followers. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In 2021, more misinformation will be available and be discussed in social media and online in general than ever before. In order to keep track of the facts, we must ensure to keep our heads above this water. Originally the concept included people who had the virus but recovered, but as it can get caught more than once, the idea was ditched. Such passports or certificates (QR codes, or whatever form it might take) should allow us to live more normal lives, travel and work. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This idea has been on the discussion table since early Spring, and there already are several uses of the concept: for example, they were \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002Ftravel\u002Farticle\u002Femirates-passengers-blood-test-covid-19\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">using rapid tests\u003C\u002Fa> on Emirates Airlines as early as in April. More recently, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailymail.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002Farticle-9025461\u002FFirst-look-new-NHS-Covid-19-vaccination-identity-card.html\" target=\"_blank\">NHS created a vaccination card\u003C\u002Fa> for those who have already been vaccinated in the UK. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Prognosis:\u003C\u002Fem> \u003Cbr>We can expect to see digital health solutions like applications being used to carry this data; and even more hardcore methods such as including \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcommonpass.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>vaccination data\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong>\u003Cem> in electronic passports\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> and national identity cards.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. \u003Cstrong>Further expansion of telemedicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Case: \u003C\u002Fem>after 2020, 2021 will be about telemedicine becoming mainstream and widespread. Remote care will be the safe norm in more and more countries. It will also reach more rural regions, and we will see video consultations added to care options. Telemedicine will become more widespread in hospitals, GPs’ offices and in specialist clinics.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Prognosis\u003C\u002Fem>: \u003Cbr>We will see a generation getting used to telemedicine as the initial line of primary care – so much so that maybe even the word “telemedicine” will not be used so much as it’ll \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>become part of the new norm\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong> within medical care. It is a clear indicator of the tech giant’s plans for the future. This still stands even though they \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2021\u002F01\u002F04\u002Fhaven-the-amazon-berkshire-jpmorgan-venture-to-disrupt-healthcare-is-disbanding-after-3-years.html\" target=\"_blank\">failed to become\u003C\u002Fa> a healthcare service company – at least they did fail as a member of a joint venture. Through Amazon Care (a service the company currently only provides for its employees) the Tech Giant will still try to position itself as a front-runner in providing healthcare solutions. This is definitely a trend that’ll continue in 2021. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Prognosis: \u003C\u002Fem>\u003Cbr>Somebody sure \u003Cem>must\u003C\u002Fem> save healthcare. If it will be Amazon or another player from among the Tech Giants, we don’t know yet; and we probably won’t see the end of this race in 2021. But as much as we know of why Haven discontinued, maybe Amazon got what it wanted to get out of this pilot and now \u003Cstrong>\u003Cem>goes on transforming healthcare alone\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. \u003Cstrong>Self-Monitoring\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cem>Case:\u003C\u002Fem> self-monitoring devices and sensors have been on the rise since the beginning of the epidemic. Wearables can help in the detection of the virus’ symptoms, either as a form of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnews.northwestern.edu\u002Fstories\u002F2020\u002F04\u002Fmonitoring-covid-19-from-hospital-to-home-first-wearable-device-continuously-tracks-key-symptoms\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">devices\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fpatreon.com\u002Fposts\u002Fcold-technology-44329108\">applications\u003C\u002Fa>. Although it’s a relatively young field, there are already masses of studies and uses for artificial intelligence in healthcare; so much so that in 2020 we wrote numerous articles about its use in medicine, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F7-things-you-can-expect-from-a-i-in-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\">what we can\u003C\u002Fa> and can’t expect of the field, its role in the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcloud-gaming-can-bring-artificial-intelligence-to-the-doctors-office\" target=\"_blank\">expansion of a doctor’s office\u003C\u002Fa> and even had two scientific papers \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41746-020-00333-z\" target=\"_blank\">published in Nature\u003C\u002Fa> on the subject; one of them is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnew-study-the-state-of-artificial-intelligence-based-fda-approved-medical-devices-and-algorithms-an-online-database\" target=\"_blank\">an online database\u003C\u002Fa> of medical devices and algorithms. The introduction of artificial intelligence, robotics, social media, various sensors and wearables in medicine could save millions of lives and reduce costs at the same time. Shouldn’t they ensure the smooth advancement towards the paradigm-shift from offline to digital healthcare?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Well, the question is a little bit more complex. Pharmaceutical companies have decades-long experience in healthcare but most of them are still struggling with adopting new technologies. This is just not their strongest arm. Some new medical companies are good at adopting technology, but have no experience in introducing breakthrough changes into healthcare. There have been failures in the past when technology companies tried to dive into healthcare. For example Google launched its Google Health personal health information centralization service in 2007. Entering information was voluntary, and once registered, Google Health used the information to provide the user with a merged health record, information on conditions, and possible interactions between drugs, conditions, and allergies. However, the service was stalled four years later because – according to the official reasoning – it was not having the broad impact the developers hoped for. Some argued that \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002F11480\u002F10-reasons-why-google-health-failed\">Google Health was unsuccessful for numerous reasons\u003C\u002Fa>: it was not social and fun for users, it did not involve healthcare professionals, it was difficult to use, poorly marketed and for Google it was difficult to partner with insurance companies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FMicrosoft_HealthVault\">Microsoft HealthVault\u003C\u002Fa> has a similar story – the difference is that the platform still operates. Microsoft created it as a web-based personal health record system in October 2007, to store and maintain health and fitness information. You go in there, basically sit in hot steam for the next 10 or 15 minutes, then you go outside – and you jump into or pour onto yourself a lot of ice-cold water so that your whole body will feel it. Users have to place their thumb on the sensor, and only wait for 30-seconds for the analysis to complete. We are still waiting for the big breakthrough and as digital health plays the main role in this transformation, it will more likely come from tech than pharma companies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Moreover, when did Samsung, Amazon, HP, Dell, or Sony decide to disappear from this story?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>So why are tech companies not bringing the disruptive change to healthcare?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Regulation\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Healthcare and pharma is a highly regulated industry where such regulatory and state-agencies like the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) have a big voice.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Evidence-based medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>. The medical community is reluctant to adopt new technologies or solutions as long as there is enough evidence in medical studies. And we all know that research and publishing the results takes time and a lot of efforts.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Risking lives\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Needless to say that in healthcare, companies are „playing” with human lives. It is a risk not many companies can deal with.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Hierarchy\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Due to the current patriarchal system in healthcare, where medical professionals are superior to patients in decision-making (don’t worry, for not long as the patient empowerment revolution is on its way), companies have to deal with different levels of participation. It’s not enough to persuade patients if their caregivers are not on board.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Empowerment.\u003C\u002Fstrong> In healthcare, almost all services and technologies have been accessible in the ivory tower of medicine without giving access to other actors. This creates an additional obstacle for tech companies for rolling out their own products.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Quality of technology\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In healthcare, it is not enough precaution if the device will not blow up in your hands. It needs to be accurate, sensitive, easy-to-use and reliable because medical professionals might base their decisions on the data they provide. Thus, patients need high-quality, reliable and long-lasting products. Stakeholders of healthcare are not used to it and they will appreciate honesty.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Don’t underestimate\u003C\u002Fstrong> the power of evidence-based medicine. If you can prove through peer-reviewed studies that your idea works, the medical community will back you immediately.\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u003Cstrong>Acknowledge\u003C\u002Fstrong> that changing healthcare is taking place through a cultural revolution (how we adopt to new technologies).
