Let’s see how.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The advantages of 5G\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>5G promises high bandwidth, low latency and low power-low cost in healthcare. It will open the gate to a flood of new inventions and the implementation of ideas that have already been in the public consciousness, such as stable augmented reality or truly immersive virtual reality platforms powered by networks.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Hospitals also equip themselves for change. That is at least 10 to 100 times faster than today’s 4G services. The first one refers to both the increase in speed and bandwidth, as well as the ability to connect a lot more devices at once, which is a prerequisite for the Internet of Things (IoT) networks. At the moment, smart sensors, connected devices, and other IoT tools are putting current networks under increasing strain. While 4G supports only 4000 devices per square kilometre, 5G can support up to a million devices. Now, that’s an insanely huge difference.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The second dimension, latency, or in other words, the responsiveness of a given system, will become key for the advancement of remote controlling in many sectors. In a 5G network, that round-trip time will fall to around one millisecond. That will be extremely important in the development of telehealth, especially telesurgeries.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>And finally, the third dimension of 5G is the appearance of customized networks. This one will prove to be truly revolutionary – for providers, at least, not necessarily for the average consumer. This means that instead of customers connecting to the same networks, operators will carve out subnetworks with features tuned to specific requirements. And not in the distant future: \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pcmag.com\u002Farticle\u002F354624\u002Fhow-a-small-city-in-finland-turned-into-a-5g-pioneer\" target=\"_blank\">hospitals in Finland\u003C\u002Fa> have already deployed a range of such solutions for years, from a way to do stroke rehab through VR and smart bandages that track your healing to a way for parents to interact with babies who are stuck in incubators. According to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.anthem.com\u002Fblog\u002Fliving-healthy\u002Ftop-4-trends-in-health-care-technology\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthem\u003C\u002Fa>, 86 percent of doctors say wearables increase patient engagement with their own health. Additionally, these devices are predicted to decrease hospital costs by 16 percent in the next five years. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Both statistics are likely to increase further in the coming years. Although expectations regarding health sensors, wearables, and other connected devices are already high to transmit often real-time data to doctors about the user’s health, networks and\u002For mobile technology cannot show up the performance matching these expectations at the moment. That’s why 5G technology could be a game-changer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Parallel to the advancement of health IoT networks and devices, the possibility to create big data-powered smart algorithms in healthcare will also increase. We emphasised the importance of good design both \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-hospital-design-inside-the-point-of-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">inside\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-healthcare-design-outside-the-point-of-care\u002F\">outside\u003C\u002Fa> the point of care. We imagined that these institutions will become “\u003Cem>health centres for patients for preventing diseases, for acute care patients and for patients who need surgical procedures or large radiology machines\u003C\u002Fem>.” \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The following points about the ideal hospital might sound utopistic or even naive; however, each one has already been implemented in a hospital somewhere in the world, proving it&#8217;s indeed not some dreamy speculation.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The need for speed\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>On The Medical Futurist \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.patreon.com\u002Fthemedicalfuturist\" target=\"_blank\">Patreon channel\u003C\u002Fa>, Kimberly Powell, VP of NVIDIA \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.patreon.com\u002Fposts\u002Fbuilding-smart-37511442\" target=\"_blank\">talked\u003C\u002Fa> about how NVIDIA could build hospitals in a matter of days. As you’ll see, it won’t take a leap into science fiction; instead, these are logical and unambiguous steps, leading to better patient experience, lowering healthcare costs and safe data handling. We have already seen some elements of the following in practice, but not all in one institution. Let’s have a look.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The ideal hospital is…\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. \u003Cstrong>&#8230;paperless\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Yes, it starts here. Patient data stored on paper is as old as medicine itself. Now is the time to get rid of paper entirely. There is no place for paper and handwriting in a well-functioning hospital. (Yes, this is also the end of illegible doctors&#8217; notes.) Eliminating paper-based records is a huge undertaking – but achievable. For example, Bedfordshire Hospital NHS Trust has been successfully working with Xerox on reaching this goal. The hospital uses an electronic document management system for handling patient records, digitising paper records, thereby also adding to patient data security. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“\u003Cem>There was an area within the paediatric service with benching on the side,\u003C\u002Fem>” Josh Chandler, associate director of IT for the Trust explained in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.itpro.co.uk\u002Fbusiness-strategy\u002Fdigital-transformation\u002F358958\u002Fhow-nhs-bedfordshire-is-building-a-paperless\" target=\"_blank\">this article\u003C\u002Fa>. “\u003Cem>It was always completely taken up with patient notes that had been tracked in for that day&#8217;s clinics. That&#8217;s now all completely empty because it&#8217;s all accessible through a computer\u003C\u002Fem>.” The next steps will be data intake and safe remote data management. That is still to come, for this particular hospital, but they set a good example for others. The place of treatment should be the patient’s home; just as well as the place of diagnostics and the place of rehabilitation. What is needed to achieve this is first and foremost good connection. Staff and data should be connected with the hospital and the patients’ homes. If a hospital has 5G with wi-fi in the wards, the data will run faster than people. This will allow faster decision-making and future-readiness. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of the world’s first 5G-enabled hospitals was the Veterans Affairs Department’s healthcare facility in Palo Alto, California. At the launch of the concept, the hospital \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nextgov.com\u002Femerging-tech\u002F2020\u002F02\u002Fveterans-affairs-launches-its-first-5g-enabled-hospital\u002F162949\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">stated\u003C\u002Fa> “\u003Cem>VA providers are presently tapping into virtual reality to treat patients with post-traumatic stress disorder and piloting exoskeleton devices to help vets with spinal cord injuries regain their mobility—both of which could possibly be enhanced through the budding technology.’\u003C\u002Fem> The team primarily used the capacities and the connectivity in medical education. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, with the pandemic, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nextgov.com\u002Femerging-tech\u002F2020\u002F08\u002Fsix-months-vas-5g-enabled-hospital-project\u002F167593\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the team also\u003C\u002Fa> “\u003Cem>recognised that the system also offered an opportunity to bring people who are meant to be social distancing together in a virtual environment and enable them to collectively interact.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let’s Design The Hospital Of The Future! - The Medical Futurist\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FGeYvybkoPLI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. &#8230;designed, not built for a purpose\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Through its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.architectmagazine.com\u002Fproject-gallery\u002Fpatient-room-2020-3166#:~:text=Patient%20Room%202020%20is%20a,patients%2C%20families%2C%20and%20caregivers.&amp;text=The%20prototype%20hospital%20room%20is,Studio%20in%20New%20York%20City.\" target=\"_blank\">Patient Room 2020\u003C\u002Fa> project, non-profit design organisation NXT Health aimed to design the future of hospital rooms. It’s a high-achieving, inspiring project built with designers along with healthcare professionals with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthmanagement.org\u002Fc\u002Fhospital\u002Fissuearticle\u002Fthe-patient-room-2020-next-generation-in-patient-care\" target=\"_blank\">the aim\u003C\u002Fa> to “\u003Cem>both improve patient experience and optimise caregiver performance\u003C\u002Fem>.” It features a streamlined, patient-centered design, deployable bedside work area with embedded technology as well as various safety features. Unfortunately, the project has not (yet) been deployed anywhere, proving that even the best ideas can get stuck at viability.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But indeed, the design of a hospital building should not facilitate the meeting of patients and doctors; it should be planned so that patients and doctors can meet there\u003Cem> in the best conditions.\u003C\u002Fem> We \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-hospital-design-inside-the-point-of-care\" target=\"_blank\">recently wrote\u003C\u002Fa> about the specific hospital design both in- and outside the point of care in our articles. There we explained with our experts how interior spaces and patient rooms should be built; and pointed out four key elements for future (re)designs of medical institutions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. &#8230;would use patient design\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We wrote about it over and over again: the ideal hospital is designed by patients. This is exactly what Professor Stefaan Bergé did. He \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fpeek-into-the-future-of-hospitals\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">redesigned\u003C\u002Fa> his whole department based on the book, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Famzn.to\u002F1w0O3sx\" target=\"_blank\">The Guide to the Future of Medicine\u003C\u002Fa>, covering patients’ suggestions. It turned out that patients wanted the simplest things like more privacy and more information. But as hospital design \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bdcnetwork.com\u002Fblog\u002Fhealthcare-architect-turned-patient-what-i-learned-when-admitted-facility-i-helped-design\" target=\"_blank\">directly affects\u003C\u002Fa> how patients receive care and, ultimately, how they heal, the design of these institutions should also change. It helped us realise how many tasks could be conducted from afar, often with much greater efficiency. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\" target=\"_blank\">Telemedicine\u003C\u002Fa> came and conquered, and will stay with us even with the pandemic gone. The fact that patients don’t actually need to get to the hospital\u002Fclinic, and doctors don’t necessarily need to meet them in person decreases stress and time wasted – but the effectiveness of the consultation remains, at least in most cases. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Remote patient monitoring works well for example at UCLA Health in their post-surgical remote monitoring program. Their \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uclahealth.org\u002Ftelehealth\u002Fremote-patient-monitoring\" target=\"_blank\">Cardiac Telehealth Program\u003C\u002Fa> is for patients who undergo heart surgery. Therein patients receive a cardiac telehealth kit upon leaving the hospital. This telehealth technology can send important health data over the internet to UCLA nursing staff, but patients can also contact their doctors using the tablet provided in the kit.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Hospital design needs to follow this transformation; and even provide doctors with dedicated teleconsultation spaces with appropriate \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.cssspnql.com\u002Fdocs\u002Fdefault-source\u002Fcentre-de-documentation\u002Fdoc_telesante_salle_eng_web.pdf?sfvrsn=2\" target=\"_blank\">design\u003C\u002Fa>, devices, connection, lamps, and an acceptable hospital background for the video. Pretty much like a miniature studio within the hospital. It’s important to have proper patient rooms in the hospital; it should be just as important to have the right venue for remote care because that is the new norm.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>6. &#8230;has places for healthcare personnel to relax\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The well-being of healthcare personnel also got exposed during the pandemic – and hospitals, in general, were falling short. Well-maintained and equipped common rooms and resting spaces should be provided for frontline personnel even outside a pandemic. The pressure for these people both physically and mentally is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">so h\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\u002F\">igh\u003C\u002Fa> that hospitals need to create the opportunity for them to recharge. The ideal hospital should be a wellness centre for patients AND health personnel alike. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A good example here is the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York. Here David Putrino, Ph.D., Co-Director of the Abilities Research Center and Director of Rehabilitation Innovation at the Mount Sinai Health System, has “converted his lab into recharge rooms for front-line healthcare workers.” Along with his team, he created “\u003Cem>multi-sensory experiences that can reduce stress in just 15 minutes\u003C\u002Fem>” – he explained in \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mountsinai.org\u002Fabout\u002Fnewsroom\u002Fpodcasts\u002Froad-resilience\u002Frecharge-room\" target=\"_blank\">this podcast\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\n\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"656\" height=\"496\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2021\u002F04\u002Fptsd.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33943\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Source: https:\u002F\u002Ftwitter.com\u002Fmiss_pilling\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>7. &#8230;should resolve the issue of alarm fatigue\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even today’s institutions are packed with technology, and the hospital of the future will be even more so. All these devices have their own alarm systems. Caregivers can therefore become desensitised to alarm signs from the myriad of devices emitting a cacophony of beeps all day in the clinical setting. There are as many as \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC4206416\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">187 alarms per bed per day\u003C\u002Fa>. 72% to 99% of these are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnurse.org\u002Farticles\u002Falarm-fatigue-statistics-patient-safety\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">false alarms\u003C\u002Fa>, it’s understandable that alarm fatigue came to exist. Healthcare practitioners are easily at risk of disregarding important alerts, which might even be fatal.
