In it, the organisation shares its recommendations for governments on how to “maximise the health benefits of tackling climate change in order to avoid the worst health impacts of the climate crisis.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A recent analysis found that globally, healthcare’s carbon footprint accounts for \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcontent\u002F375\u002Fbmj.n1284\" target=\"_blank\">around 4-5%\u003C\u002Fa> of total global carbon dioxide emissions. These are not insignificant figures and are the reason why the WHO is pushing for a more environmentally-sustainable approach to healthcare. Individual governments \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.england.nhs.uk\u002Fgreenernhs\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002Fsites\u002F51\u002F2020\u002F10\u002Fdelivering-a-net-zero-national-health-service.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">like in the UK\u003C\u002Fa> are also taking steps of their own in this regard.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The carbon footprint spans the whole spectrum of the healthcare landscape from the supply chain of drugs to the commute to hospitals. At The Medical Futurist, we’ve \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-and-the-climate-catastrophe\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">already explored\u003C\u002Fa> how digital health can assist in tackling climate change. Going paperless with digital prescriptions\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The UK’s NHS estimates that each of its Trusts spends \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.england.nhs.uk\u002F2015\u002F09\u002Fcutting-reliance-on-paper\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">between £500,000 and £1million\u003C\u002Fa> annually for paper storage. By going paperless, not only can these expenses be diverted to patient care but can also cut down on paper use. This is what motivated the health authority to adopt its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.england.nhs.uk\u002F2015\u002F09\u002Fcutting-reliance-on-paper\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">paperless strategy\u003C\u002Fa>. Even if it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhy-national-digital-health-transformations-fail\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">missed its target\u003C\u002Fa>, NHS Trusts \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyrecord.com\u002FArticle\u002Fwelcoming-an-end-to-paper-based-healthcare-119232\">are still working\u003C\u002Fa> on going fully paperless. The North Bristol NHS Trust can even cut down on \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyrecord.com\u002FArticle\u002Fwelcoming-an-end-to-paper-based-healthcare-119232\" target=\"_blank\">up to 1,000 medical folders daily\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A stepwise approach might work better for healthcare institutions as they build up to go completely paperless. This \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fdoctor-visits-could-provide-relief-to-uber-and-lyft-11562756401\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can lead to no-shows\u003C\u002Fa> that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fsachinjain\u002F2019\u002F10\u002F06\u002Fmissed-appointments-missed-opportunities-tackling-the-patient-no-show-problem\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">add to the cost \u003C\u002Fa>of the healthcare system. Moreover, having patients take winding routes to reach hospitals adds to their carbon footprint. For instance, patient travel in England \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flanplh\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS2542-5196(20)30271-0\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">accounts for around 10%\u003C\u002Fa> of the health service&#8217;s carbon dioxide emissions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To ensure that patients don’t miss their appointments while limiting travel distance, ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft can pool patients. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uberhealth.com\u002Fgb\u002Fen\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Uber Health\u003C\u002Fa> provides a HIPAA-compliant technology for healthcare organisations to manage and monitor rides for patients and staff to and from hospitals. Other companies and startups like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.circulation.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Circulation\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fkaizenhealth.org\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Kaizen Health\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fit-came-from-outside-5-great-examples-of-technologies-from-outside-of-healthcare\u002F\">Lyft\u003C\u002Fa> offer on-demand non-emergency medical transportation (NEMT) ride-ordering services for patients to reach hospitals in a secure and reliable manner. Already, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2021-02-23\u002Fhow-the-pandemic-is-transforming-hospital-design\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a McKinsey report estimates\u003C\u002Fa> that 25% of outpatient services could be conducted this way in the future. Telemedicine saw \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcovid-19-was-needed-for-telemedicine-to-finally-go-mainstream\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a surge in adoption\u003C\u002Fa> during the pandemic and can increase access to care in low resource areas. Since patients don’t need to physically displace themselves to a healthcare facility with telemedicine, it can help to positively \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bmj.com\u002Fcontent\u002F375\u002Fbmj.n1284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduce cost and carbon emissions\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To further help reduce patients’ carbon footprint with unnecessary visits, healthcare facilities can adopt point-of-care technologies to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-future-of-healthcare-design-outside-the-point-of-care\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">shift care to wherever patients are\u003C\u002Fa>. A smartwatch embedded with an ECG monitor like the Apple Watch can monitor their cardiac activity and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fcan-your-smartwatch-send-you-to-the-hospital\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">notify them\u003C\u002Fa> of suspicious signs. Others could use the FDA-cleared \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbiointellisense.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">BioSticker\u003C\u002Fa> smartpatch to continuously monitor vital signs like respiratory rate, activity levels, sleep status, gait and more. Subsequently, they can send the data to their physician to evaluate their health remotely. With such a level of ownership, patients could leverage its advantage to monetise their data rather than have companies profit off them, as has been traditionally the case.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the novelty of NFTs, their untapped potential in healthcare might not be known, let alone what NFTs are and how they work. This article will walk you through the basics of NFTs, how they can further empower patients in the digital health age, as well as raise concerns pertinent to the technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>What is an NFT?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Crowning it as the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002Fstyle\u002Farticle\u002Fnft-word-of-the-year-collins-scli-intl-gbr\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">Word of the Year for 2021\u003C\u002Fa>, dictionary publisher Collins \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.collinsdictionary.com\u002Fdictionary\u002Fenglish\u002Fnft\" target=\"_blank\">defines a non-fungible token\u003C\u002Fa> as &#8220;\u003Cem>a unique digital certificate, registered in a blockchain, that is used to record ownership of an asset such as an artwork or a collectible\u003C\u002Fem>.&#8221; Creating or “mining” NFT transactions leverage blockchain technology, akin to what cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are based on. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In short, the technology relies on a decentralised network of computers employing advanced cryptography to verify the validity of a transaction. We previously explored the relevance of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-the-hell-is-blockchain-what-does-it-mean-for-healthcare-and-pharma\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">blockchain in healthcare and pharma\u003C\u002Fa>, where we highlighted its ability to secure sensitive medical data and curb counterfeit drugs.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"What The Hell Is Blockchain And What Does It Mean For Healthcare And Pharma? - The Medical Futurist\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FE1wcvcta6zw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Similar to how NFTs \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.washingtonpost.com\u002Farts-entertainment\u002F2021\u002F12\u002F18\u002Fnft-art-faq\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">have disrupted the art world\u003C\u002Fa>, they could positively disrupt the digital health landscape by giving patients unprecedented control over their medical information.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As we dive into the digital health era, personal health sensors and apps equip patients with personalised data so that they can become more proactive in managing their health. But what is still mostly the norm is that these sensitive data are governed by the companies providing these services; and they often profit out of it, oblivious to patients. For example, the pregnancy-tracking app Ovia was found to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.washingtonpost.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2019\u002F04\u002F10\u002Ftracking-your-pregnancy-an-app-may-be-more-public-than-you-think\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">sell aggregated data of its users\u003C\u002Fa> to employers. Similarly, 23andMe \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2021-11-04\u002F23andme-to-use-dna-tests-to-make-cancer-drugs\" target=\"_blank\">intends to develop drugs\u003C\u002Fa> based on the genetic database it amassed from customers who used its genetic testing kits, the latter might not even have been made explicitly aware of such potential use of their data.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>It is simply not fair that private companies and institutions make money out of patient data in such a way. If the real paradigm change of digital health &#8211; that of empowering patients &#8211; takes place (and it does), the same should apply to monetising their health data, and NFTs could change the tides in this regard.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>NFT’s potentials in healthcare\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Say you’ve decided to order a direct-to-consumer DNA testing kit in order to have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fnutrigenomics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a nutrition plan tailored to your genetic makeup\u003C\u002Fa> by a private company. You also know that the latter might sell your genetic data to third parties for research purposes. But you settle for the service anyway because it’s the most accurate way to get a personalised diet at a relatively affordable price.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, by selling your genetic data and that of others, the company could be making millions that they will never share with you. You would be able to see&nbsp;where it ends up, and hold those who used it without your permission accountable since you are the sole owner of the data, as certified by the NFT authentication. Moreover, the NFT owner \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F22310188\u002Fnft-explainer-what-is-blockchain-crypto-art-faq\" target=\"_blank\">can enable a feature to earn money\u003C\u002Fa> whenever a transaction occurs with the data.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the aforementioned examples of Ovia and 23andMe, patients whose data are being used by the companies aren’t earning a cent. But with an NFT approach, companies offering digital health services could encourage patients to participate in studies by contributing their data and earning from it. Other third parties interested in utilising the data for research or developing new products could reach out directly to patients on a digital marketplace. The main difference here compared to the traditional approach, is that patients really do have the choice to share their data in a more informed manner.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>With the underlying blockchain technology and an NFT certification, the use of patient data could thus be made more transparent and&nbsp;could equip patients with control over their health records.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>NFT in medicine: the future or fad?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While much about NFT in healthcare is still speculative at this point, there are \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Finsider.fitt.co\u002Fcrypto-meets-healthcare-can-nfts-transform-patient-data-management\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">some startups that are exploring this potential\u003C\u002Fa>. One such company is \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Faimedis.io\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Aimedis\u003C\u002Fa>, which has a medical NFT marketplace where patients can participate in transactions involving their health data. The \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fenjin.io\u002Fshowcase\u002Fhealth-hero\" target=\"_blank\">health monitoring app Go!\u003C\u002Fa>, developed by Enjin and Health Hero, can collect individual activity and wellness data from popular apps like Apple Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit. In doing so, it creates Well-being NFTs, or W-NFTs, imbued with the scarcity of the users’ health data assets. These can even be traded on the open market.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are several potential roadblocks to adopting the technology \u003Cem>en masse \u003C\u002Fem>in the near future, especially in healthcare. As it stands, blockchain technology \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.pm360online.com\u002Fbeyond-trendy-investments-three-applications-of-nfts-in-healthcare-and-pharma-marketing\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">runs quite inefficiently\u003C\u002Fa>, with large amounts of energy required for minor transactions. This is further tied to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2021\u002F3\u002F15\u002F22328203\u002Fnft-cryptoart-ethereum-blockchain-climate-change\" target=\"_blank\">significant greenhouse gas emissions\u003C\u002Fa>, which add to climate change. As such, NFTs might not be outright commercially viable in the near future.
