When setting expectations for the new norm, masks, some social distancing and even a subtle range of vaccines lined up \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-can-we-expect-from-2021-the-covid-perspective\">were being considered\u003C\u002Fa>… But not this. Nearing the end of 2021, we think of the end of the pandemic as a white sail gleams in the distance (and just as we publish this article, news arose of yet another virus mutant called omicron).\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh5>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>In 2021, we could’ve gotten over with the pandemic, period. But, (as it was famously said in the movie Charlie Wilson’s War), we \u003Cem>messed up the endgame\u003C\u002Fem>. Healthcare in particular. It is time to investigate what went wrong and if it could be regained.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1) Trust\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In terms of trust, healthcare had the most horrific year. Fake news. Anti-vaxxers. Conspiracy theories, misinformation, and more – 2021 was probably the worst year of all to experience these, for there was no greater need to trust science than now. No wonder that our most-watched video on YouTube this year was the one on \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fyoutu.be\u002FGza1b3oVhMw\">conspiracy theories – debunked\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Researching the options before medical intervention could be the sign of the informed e-patient – however, the resources people started using in this era of fake (including \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2021\u002F10\u002F26\u002Ftech\u002Ffacebook-covid-vaccine-misinformation\u002Findex.html\">Facebook\u003C\u002Fa> or \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.hsph.harvard.edu\u002Fnews\u002Fhsph-in-the-news\u002Finstagram-vaccine-misinformation\u002F\">Instagram\u003C\u002Fa>, unable to cope with the amount of fake on their pages) are often misleading and only add to the confusion. Regaining trust in science will be the No.1. task in 2022 for governments, institutions and medical professionals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca class=\"img\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F06\u002F181_tmf-01.png\"\u003C\u002Fa>IMAGE\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) Adoption of advanced technology\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One of the most interesting phenomena in 2020-21 was how fast the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhow-covid-19-catalysed-digital-health-trends\u002F\">digital transformation of healthcare\u003C\u002Fa> took place. The rapid and much-needed adoption of digital solutions, from telemedicine to at-home lab tests, from disinfecting robots to the use of A.I. in research, overcame the infrastructural or even operational hurdles that stood before these solutions for a long time. However, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-we-believe-in-the-medical-futurist-mission-statement\">cultural adoption\u003C\u002Fa> is still lagging behind. So what would make every doctor use digital health? \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-would-make-every-doctor-use-digital-health\">We listed the steps in this article.\u003C\u002Fa>&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In our pre-COVID-world, it would have taken a lot of time for physicians and patients to accept that they sometimes have to talk on the phone or via zoom and not always in person. In such a world they would have had time to figure out how to build the same or similar relationship they used to have in person. In the post-covid era, they had to accept the technology element in a matter of weeks – and now still nobody knows how to build those relationships through virtual calls. The global shortage of medical professionals that characterised healthcare even \u003Cem>before\u003C\u002Fem> the pandemic could really \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fphysician-shortages\u002F\">make it a luxury to meet our physicians\u003C\u002Fa>. The seemingly endless battle against the virus furthers this problem, and physician burnout due to COVID-19 is an issue that needs to be taken seriously.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcovid19-sciencetable.ca\u002Fsciencebrief\u002Fburnout-in-hospital-based-healthcare-workers-during-covid-19\u002F\">Studies confirm\u003C\u002Fa> the severity of this predicament. From 30-40% in early 2020, the prevalence of severe burnout grew over 60% for Canadian physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Surgeries, treatments or even chemotherapies are postponed even for vaccinated patients because the intensive care of the unvaccinated places an unnecessary burden on healthcare systems. According \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medscape.com\u002Fviewarticle\u002F960331\">to this analysis\u003C\u002Fa>, one in 7 cancer operations was delayed due to COVID-19 worldwide, even in essential \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F34145514\u002F\">pediatric care\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although the use of digital tools in healthcare can lift some of this burden off the shoulders of hospitals and healthcare personnel, remote care or telemedicine won’t be able to make up for the loss in time in diagnosing patients or receiving treatment.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5) The future\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The pandemic will affect physician applicants worldwide and will have an unimaginable long-term impact on medicine. Already, about 5 million healthcare workers are missing from hospital systems worldwide; and the interlude that already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com\u002Farticles\u002F10.1186\u002Fs12909-020-02462-1\">disrupted medical education\u003C\u002Fa>, and the weight of the profession new applicants already see in healthcare have a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fbmcmededuc.biomedcentral.com\u002Farticles\u002F10.1186\u002Fs12909-021-02770-0\">reverse effect for medical students\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Chr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\u002F>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>However, this will hopefully be a temporary halt. I sincerely hope and believe that with the greater use of digital technologies, the focus of healthcare will return to the best part of medicine: human relationships. And that the company would keep on focusing on health services with a keen interest in serving senior citizens.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Only a few days later, fitness company \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcareitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcrossfit-launch-fully-digital-primary-care-service\">\u003Cstrong>CrossFit declared\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> it would launch a fully digital primary care service in an attempt to provide an \u003Cem>“individualised approach to health\u003C\u002Fem>.”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cul class=\"wp-block-list\">\u003Cli>\u003Cstrong>Tobacco company \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fafter-buying-health-company-vectura-tobacco-giant-philip-morris-will-profit-from-treating-the-illnesses-its-products-create-168564\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cstrong>Philip Morris showed\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> similar interest this summer by buying health firm Ventura claiming they are getting ready to create a “\u003Cem>smoke-free future.\u003C\u002Fem>”&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Have all these companies lost their minds?! Suddenly everyone that produces technology or has empty retail space wants to get into healthcare. It’s obvious that retailers and other industries don’t want to miss out on this lucrative segment of the economy. The global health industry \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpolicyadvice.net\u002Finsurance\u002Finsights\u002Fhealthcare-statistics\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was worth $8.45 trillion\u003C\u002Fa> in 2018. Global healthcare spending could reach over \u003Cstrong>$10 trillion by 2022\u003C\u002Fstrong>. So it is clearly big business. But the thing is – it’s not a business.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Doing healthcare “right” is a complex and challenging task similar to taking off to the sunset on a galloping blind horse through a minefield. Due to regulations, the principles of evidence-based medicine and the huge responsibilities that come with developing healthcare solutions, it is so much more difficult than anyone would previously imagine. These companies (Best Buy, Walmart, CrossFit or, through the Oculus headset, Facebook and the others) wouldn’t just want to get a slice of the healthcare cake, and, say, offer accessibility to at-home lab tests or sell healthcare devices. They want to be a part of the solution. A part of healthcare.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>What’s worrying is how these companies have never had experience with healthcare before. Everybody wants to provide healthcare services as if it was a simple technological matter. But this is very different from Big Tech dedicating billions of dollars to set up their own branch of healthcare-related businesses.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Real-life examples of non-healthcare companies aiming to provide care\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.retaildive.com\u002Fnews\u002Fwalgreens-invests-1b-to-open-hundreds-of-primary-care-clinics\u002F581298\u002F\">Walgreens announced\u003C\u002Fa> in 2020 that it would open over 700 primary care clinics throughout the U.S. in the coming years, cooperating with VillageMD, having in-house doctors in the facilities instead of nurse practitioners.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Pharmacy chain \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.healthcaredive.com\u002Fnews\u002Fcvs-to-open-15k-healthhub-stores-in-next-2-years\u002F556128\u002F\">CVS Health aims to open\u003C\u002Fa> 1,500 HealthHub stores, in an attempt to make healthcare down to the local level; the chain already offers vaccinations and pharmacy-related matters, but also wants to provide primary care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhbr.org\u002F2019\u002F10\u002Fcan-big-box-retailers-provide-local-health-care\">Best Buy also builds\u003C\u002Fa> on its 125,000 employees. This non-clinical workforce would, according to news, provide healthcare and support while the company focuses on remote care solutions. In 2018 \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.indigo9digital.com\u002Fblog\u002Fretailtrendshealthcare\">Best Buy was said\u003C\u002Fa> to have spent over 1 billion USD on healthcare-related acquisitions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As early as this year, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcare.crossfit.com\u002F\">CrossFit Precision Care\u003C\u002Fa> is said to launch in the U.S. (and is said to have a global rollout after the U.S. launch).&nbsp; CrossFit-trained doctors and health coaches will guide patients towards a healthier lifestyle, but at the same time offer primary care solutions through telemedicine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on all these, it is absolutely plausible that a few years from now, sitting in your car, with the push of a button you could ask for medical help;&nbsp;a dispatcher would then ask you to cough in the microphone, analyse your vocal biomarkers and connect you to a telemedicine service where you&#8217;d receive a few diagnostic solutions. Even if you have amazing VR technology. There’s a complex regulatory system in place and a need for experience from qualified experts. You can’t just outsource telemedicine to a call centre at the other end of the world.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But why do companies like Best Buy or Crossfit think they could do so? Because for the man of the 21st century, healthcare looks almost like a purely technological question.
