But would this mean that medical professionals are not needed anymore? But the fear of technology is there, from artificial intelligence taking the place of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fai.nejm.org\u002Fdoi\u002Ffull\u002F10.1056\u002FAIdbp2300192\" target=\"_blank\">doctors in various specialties\u003C\u002Fa>, and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmedical-robots\" target=\"_blank\">robots\u003C\u002Fa> surpassing surgeons’ skills\u003C\u002Fspan> \u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to taking jobs \u003C\u002Fspan>\u003Ca rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Fbernardmarr\u002F2016\u002F04\u002F25\u002Fsurprisingly-these-10-professional-jobs-are-under-threat-from-big-data\u002F#322bade7426b\" target=\"_blank\">\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in pharma\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u003C\u002Fspan>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>According to a quote that has now become a classic, “\u003Cem>AI will be bigger than all other tech revolutions, and robots are likely to replace 50 percent of all jobs in the next decade,\u003C\u002Fem>” as venture capitalist Kai-Fu Lee \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.cnbc.com\u002F2017\u002F04\u002F27\u002Fkai-fu-lee-robots-will-replace-half-of-all-jobs.html\" target=\"_blank\">told CNBC\u003C\u002Fa> a while ago. Although we still have 3 years from the predicted decade, it is unlikely that a change of such magnitude is going to happen in this timeframe.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Silicon Valley investor Vinod Khosla \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.co.uk\u002Farticle\u002Fdoctors-replaced-with-machines\" target=\"_blank\">said\u003C\u002Fa> that \u003Cem>“machines will substitute 80 percent of doctors in the future in a healthcare scene driven by entrepreneurs, not medical professionals\u003C\u002Fem>.” Prof Geoffrey Hinton, the godfather of neural networks, once \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftowardsdatascience.com\u002Fwhy-ai-will-not-replace-radiologists-c7736f2c7d80\" target=\"_blank\">said that\u003C\u002Fa> it’s \u003Cem>“quite obvious that we should stop training radiologists”\u003C\u002Fem> as image perception algorithms are very soon going to be demonstrably better than humans. Radiologists are, he said, “\u003Cem>the coyote already over the edge of the cliff which hasn’t yet looked down.”\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">I don’t think so.\u003C\u002Fh5>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Artificial intelligence-based solutions will eliminate the need for human labour and will replace human resources in medical jobs that people didn’t like anyway. \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-evolution-of-clinical-documentation-from-paper-to-ai\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Administration\u003C\u002Fa>. Or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-is-medical-coding-automation-and-its-potentials-in-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">medical coding\u003C\u002Fa>. And \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Femag.medicalexpo.com\u002Fdisinfection-robots-against-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">disinfecting\u003C\u002Fa> hospital spaces. Offering \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F11\u002F11\u002Ftech\u002Frobots-india-covid-spc-intl\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">telehealth solutions\u003C\u002Fa>. And smart algorithms are also there to supplement professionals’ tasks in many fields, like diagnostics, image analysis and decision support,&nbsp;hospital resource or clinical workflow optimisation, forecasting, drug discovery and precision medicine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Healthcare will need humans in the future\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Don’t get me wrong, AI will be visibly present in healthcare in the next 10-15 years. We already see good examples, like the sepsis watch algorithm that cut sepsis mortality rates \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wsj.com\u002Farticles\u002Fhow-hospitals-are-using-ai-to-save-lives-11649610000\" target=\"_blank\">by nearly 30%\u003C\u002Fa>, or \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.eurekalert.org\u002Fnews-releases\u002F1003963\" target=\"_blank\">skin cancer detection with near-perfect accuracy\u003C\u002Fa> lending a hand to dermatologists, or the algorithm that predicts \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.uni.lu\u002Flcsb-en\u002Fnews\u002Fpredicting-arrhythmia-30-minutes-before-it-happens\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">atrial fibrillation 30 minutes before onset\u003C\u002Fa> allowing time for preemptive intervention.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AI will transform what it means to be a doctor; some tasks will disappear, while others will be added to the work routine. However, there will never be a situation where the embodiment of automation, either a robot or an algorithm, will take the place of a doctor. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Let me tell you five reasons why.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1)\u003C\u002Fstrong> Empathy cannot be replaced\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even if the array of technologies offered brilliant solutions, it would be difficult for them to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Falgorithms-robots-mimic-empathy\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mimic empathy\u003C\u002Fa>. Why? We don’t trust machines in tasks where they are better than humans – like taking \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwould-you-let-a-robot-take-your-blood-sample\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">blood samples\u003C\u002Fa>.&nbsp; We need doctors holding our hands while telling us about a life-changing diagnosis, their guidance through therapy, and their overall support. An algorithm cannot replace that.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2) Physicians have a non-linear working method\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There was \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.housemd-guide.com\u002Fseason1\u002F108poison.php\" target=\"_blank\">an episode\u003C\u002Fa> in House M.D. where the team couldn’t figure out how a young boy could have been poisoned. They considered many options: drugs, food poisoning, pesticide poisoning. For every possible diagnosis, they suggested a different treatment option. Each made the patient worse – until they figured out, by accident, that the boy picked up a phosmet, a type of insecticide from the jeans he bought from a street vendor who kept the trousers in a truck. The boy didn’t wash the pants before wearing them, that’s how his skin could absorb the poison.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>No algorithm could have made such a diagnosis. Data, measurements, and quantitative analytics are crucial parts of a doctor’s work. It will be even more critical in the future. Setting up a diagnosis and treating a patient are not linear processes. Diseases have the same features. Thus, no case is the same; every one of them requires the attention of human physicians. Until the emergence of complex, digital solutions, doctors translated data from simple medical devices into medical decisions. In the future, the task will be the same – they will only use more complicated technologies.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3) Complex digital technologies require competent professionals\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More and more sophisticated digital health solutions will require qualified medical professionals’ competence, no matter whether it’s about robotics or AI.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cmark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-black-color\">The human brain is so complex and able to oversee such a vast scale of knowledge and data that it is merely not worth developing an AI that takes over this job – the human brain does it so well. It is more worthwhile to program those repetitive, data-based tasks, and leave the complex analysis\u002Fdecision to the person. While they will provide the data, interpretation will always remain a human territory.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4) There will always be tasks algorithms and robots can never complete\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Physicians, nurses, and other medical staff members have plenty of cumbersome, monotonous, and repetitive tasks to complete every day. A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpubmed\u002F25626223\" target=\"_blank\">study says\u003C\u002Fa> that in the United States, the average doctor spends 8.7 hours per week on administration. Psychiatrists spent the highest proportion of their working hours on paperwork (20.3%), followed by internists (17.3%) and family\u002Fgeneral practitioners (17.3%). These types of tasks and procedures can be automated – and they should be.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are responsibilities and duties which technologies cannot perform. While AI can sift through millions of pages of documents in seconds, it will never be able to do the Heimlich maneuver. There will always be tasks where humans will be faster, more reliable – or cheaper than technology.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>5) It has never been tech vs human\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The consistent and constant enemy image building should stop once and for all.&nbsp;It has never been technology versus humans since technological innovations always serve the purpose of helping people. Collaboration between humans and technology is the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fknowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\u002Farticle\u002Freimagining-work-age-ai\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">ultimate response\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Farxiv.org\u002Fabs\u002F1606.05718\" target=\"_blank\">A study\u003C\u002Fa> for identifying metastatic breast cancer through deep learning shows something similar. When the deep learning system’s predictions were combined with the human pathologist’s diagnoses, the image classification and the tumor localization score increased significantly. Moreover, the human error rate decreased by 85 percent. The findings show that artificial intelligence and humans are the most potent when they cooperate.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Chess is a great example. It was believed to meet its demise following Garry Kasparov&#8217;s defeat by a supercomputer. However, the opposite has happened. Today, over 600 million people engage in daily chess, and AI has become an indispensable tool for players, enthusiasts, and coaches alike.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>AI has demonstrably enhanced chess by creating a more competitive, popular, and ultimately, more effective environment. AI has transformative potential in healthcare as well, where its adoption promises similar advancements.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Imagine what healthcare could be capable of if the creativity and problem-solving skills of humans were combined with the infinite computing power and cognitive resources of technology. This option is already here.
