Most of us can probably relate to, or at least sympathise with, the anxiety of having to undergo a surgical procedure or the prospect of extended hospital stays.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To address such concerns, researchers have been investigating the assistance of technology to ease the patient journey. This piqued our interest to investigate further and, in this article, we collected some of the most promising digital health approaches for such ends.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Tuning down discomfort during surgeries with noise-cancelling headphones\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You might already own noise-cancelling headphones but they might have uses other than entertainment. Ambient noise pollution in surgical rooms \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.headphonesty.com\u002F2024\u002F09\u002Fanc-headphones-reduce-pain-speed-recovery\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can influence\u003C\u002Fa> patients’ stress level. With noise-cancelling headphones, studies have shown \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fabs\u002Fpii\u002FS1089947223009395\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved physiological parameters\u003C\u002Fa>. In some cases, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.sciencedirect.com\u002Fscience\u002Farticle\u002Fabs\u002Fpii\u002FS0952818023002362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the equipment even reduced\u003C\u002Fa> postoperative opioid consumption; indicating a reduction in postoperative pain.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even in surgeries not involving anaesthesia, noise-cancelling headphones were found to be beneficial. Patients wearing them and listening to music were found to have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC8991527\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">significantly less\u003C\u002Fa> intraoperative anxiety.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Virtual reality in the intensive care unit\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Virtual reality (VR) is a promising technology that has been adopted in \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F5-ways-medical-vr-is-changing-healthcare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various aspects of healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>. However, one use case that has often been overlooked is VR’s use in the intensive care unit (ICU). The technology can “teleport” patients into relaxing environments to help their recovery.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For example, at \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wuft.org\u002Fhealthscience\u002F2019-10-18\u002Fvirtual-reality-dreams-helps-patients-cope-in-icu\" target=\"_blank\">UF Health Shands Hospital in Florida\u003C\u002Fa>, VR headsets and noise-cancelling headphones have been used to virtually transport ICU patients to remote beaches and hillsides. This relatively under-researched side effect can affect \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthcare-in-europe.com\u002Fen\u002Fnews\u002Fvr-glasses-could-ease-trauma-of-waking-up-in-an-icu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">up to 60% of ex-ICU patients\u003C\u002Fa>. Their complaints include anxiety, recurring nightmares, fatigue and cognitive problems.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>To tackle this issue, researchers in The Netherlands \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealthcare-in-europe.com\u002Fen\u002Fnews\u002Fvr-glasses-could-ease-trauma-of-waking-up-in-an-icu.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have employed VR technology\u003C\u002Fa>. With the help of VR headsets, virtual medical staff walk patients through their current environment and how things work in an ICU. This can ease the process of patients waking up in ICU wards and reduce the associated anxiety.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Video games to play through recovery\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Video games or video game concepts have found \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F4-examples-of-merging-gaming-digital-health\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a home in healthcare\u003C\u002Fa>. The concept of gamification has been adopted by health trackers to motivate users in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Cooperative games have been shown to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC3391574\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aid healthcare professionals\u003C\u002Fa> in relieving stress and promoting teamwork&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For paediatric patients, Hopelab \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhopelab.org\u002Fcase-study\u002Fre-mission\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has developed games\u003C\u002Fa> aimed at improving cancer treatment adherence and self-efficacy. Their freely available games mirror real-world chemotherapeutic strategies to help inform patients about the treatments and their functioning. Researchers from Ohio State College of Medicine have \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fjamanetwork.com\u002Fjournals\u002Fjamasurgery\u002Ffullarticle\u002F2772853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">devised a video game-based approach\u003C\u002Fa> to reduce postoperative delirium. The latter refers to the onset of confusion following major surgery that involved anaesthesia.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In a randomised controlled trial for their approach, the researchers had patients over 60 play a game on a tablet for one hour per day before undertaking a scheduled major surgery. The game was designed to stimulate their memory, speed, attention, flexibility and problem solving abilities. Those who gamed regularly were found to have their risk of postoperative delirium \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailymail.co.uk\u002Fsciencetech\u002Farticle-8939167\u002FPlaying-video-games-major-surgery-prevents-delirium-helps-speed-recovery-study-finds.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reduced by over 60%\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. Virtual scenes to facilitate paediatric procedures&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Iatrophobia is the technical term for the fear of doctors or medical procedures. It is especially common among children aged \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ynhh.org\u002Farticles\u002Fafraid-of-doctors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">between 6 months and 4-years-old\u003C\u002Fa>. In addition to being an unpleasant experience to the child and parent, it can make paediatric procedures such as collecting blood or administering vaccinations challenging.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>One way to address this is to \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002F35712230\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relax and distract patients\u003C\u002Fa>. Digital health company \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpillovr.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PilloVR\u003C\u002Fa> has taken the technological route for this endeavour with the help of VR technology. Their solution involves providing paediatric patients VR headsets to view bespoke, immersive content.
