It’s a peculiar mechanic to include in a game but eerily prescient if you consider that the game was years in the making and released last November. Many are \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgbatemp.net\u002Fthreads\u002Fdeath-stranding-pc-version-impression.570219\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">drawing parallels\u003C\u002Fa> to our current situation and the one depicted in \u003Cem>Death Stranding\u003C\u002Fem>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>But cautionary tales of the need to practice social distancing and disinfect aren’t the only way that games overlap with our healthcare landscape. Digital health solutions increasingly incorporate aspects of gaming in subtle or less subtle ways. Join us as we explore 4 of these aspects and what they mean for the future of health. Gamifying health\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>If you have used a recent app, you might be familiar with \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ftop-examples-of-gamification-in-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the concept of gamification\u003C\u002Fa>; even if you haven’t heard of the term before. It refers to incorporating aspects of game playing such as a point\u002Fprogression system, motivational challenges or rewards aimed at boosting user engagement. Popular apps like Duolingo, Waze or even Tinder incorporate such aspects to entice users.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, developers of health apps also made use of gamified features to help users better tend to their health. An excellent example is that of mySugr’s approach for diabetes management. Via its app, the startup reimagined diabetes as a tamagotchi-like monster that can be tamed. The company went on to pair the app with its existing Accu-Chek Guide glucose meter to create the mySugr Bundle; thereby augmenting diabetics’ management of their condition. Insurance companies also favour such an approach, as exemplified by \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mysugr.com\u002Fen\u002Fabout-us\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">the five German insurers that offer the mySugr Bundle\u003C\u002Fa> since 2018.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For a wider audience, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-body-map-of-health-trackers-infographic\u002F\">health trackers\u003C\u002Fa> like Fitbit or the Apple Watch come with gamified features like social components and challenges to motivate users to stick to their workout, compare with their friends and work on improving results. \u003Cstrong>A recent report even found that \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.independent.co.uk\u002Flife-style\u002Fhealth-and-families\u002Fchild-health-app-fitbit-strava-youtube-phone-a9620971.html\" target=\"_blank\">more than 70% of young people\u003C\u002Fa> use such digital wellbeing services\u002Fdevices.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The researchers behind the study are advocating for schools to better educate the younger generation about the use of these services.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Finding treatments by playing video games\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The unique engagement that video games offer has also been leveraged to help researchers in developing vaccines. This is the idea behind \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffold.it\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Foldit\u003C\u002Fa>, an online computer game where players, without any prior biochemistry knowledge, compete to solve puzzles by folding protein structures so that they best fit to a target. In their latest report, researchers at the University of Washington Institute for Protein Design in Seattle tested \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffold.it\u002Fportal\u002Fnode\u002F2009921\" target=\"_blank\">100 anti-inflammatory Foldit designs\u003C\u002Fa> related to the novel coronavirus. However, the designs did not yield promising results. This only means that new puzzles will become available to allow players to find other potential solutions from different angles.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>3. Prescription video game\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As over-the-top as the above heading might sound, it is actually true: \u003Cstrong>video games are now medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>. In June 2020, the FDA made these combinations of words hold true \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theverge.com\u002F2020\u002F6\u002F15\u002F21292267\u002Ffda-adhd-video-game-prescription-endeavor-rx-akl-t01-project-evo\" target=\"_blank\">by approving of\u003C\u002Fa> the first video game to be legally marketed and prescribed as a medicine in the U.S.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Developed by Akili Interactive, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmy.akili.care\u002Fendeavor\u002Fenrollment\">EndeavorRX\u003C\u002Fa> can be prescribed by doctors for children aged 8-12 with ADHD. Published in \u003Cem>The Lancet Digital Health\u003C\u002Fem>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flandig\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS2589-7500%2820%2930017-0\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\">a recent study\u003C\u002Fa> found the game’s potential to “improve objectively measured inattention in paediatric patients with ADHD, while presenting minimal adverse events.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>More than just offering an engaging way for children with ADHD to manage their condition, it offers a drug-free alternative complying with caregiver preferences or concerns about abuse and misuse.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>4. Playing to improve health outcomes\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While the EndeavorRX’s case as an approved medicine is unique (for now), \u003Cstrong>instances of employing games to improve health outcomes are increasing\u003C\u002Fstrong>. From education through stress relief to digital alternatives, games are lending a novel, yet digital, helping hand to patients and clinicians alike.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC3391574\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">systematic review\u003C\u002Fa> published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine found that video game interventions improved 69% of psychological therapy outcomes, 59% of physical therapy outcomes and 46% of clinician skills outcomes. The latter aspect is in line with what \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdoctors-play-board-games-get-better-teamwork\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">we previously suggested\u003C\u002Fa>. Studies \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpediatrics.aappublications.org\u002Fcontent\u002F122\u002F2\u002Fe305\" target=\"_blank\">showed improved behavioural outcomes\u003C\u002Fa> with video game intervention among younger cancer patients, and this is what Re-Mission 2 based itself on to develop its games. Six are already freely-available online, putting the player inside the human body with a range of weapons and powers to combat cancer. The parallels the games draw from real-world chemotherapeutic strategies also help inform users about the treatments and their functioning.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Virtual reality (VR), a technology mostly used to offer gamers immersive environments, also shows great promise for medical purposes. In particular, it is a potent drug-free alternative for pain relief. Earlier this year, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fvirtual-reality-help-women-get-through-childbirth-with-less-pain\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">we interviewed\u003C\u002Fa> researchers investigating the benefits of VR for pain reduction in labour and delivery. They found a statistically significant reduction in pain among women who used VR during labour. Other researchers found that after VR therapy, children with cerebral palsy \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\u002Fpmc\u002Farticles\u002FPMC6935730\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">experienced a significant improvement\u003C\u002Fa> in their mobility. The authors further called for adding this method to conventional rehabilitation techniques so as to improve outcomes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Game Over\u003C\u002Fstrong>…\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even if you aren’t among the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statista.com\u002Fstatistics\u002F293304\u002Fnumber-video-gamers\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">estimated 2.7 billion gamers\u003C\u002Fa> across the globe, you are probably familiar with the phenomenon. The interactive media has been entertaining people across all age groups for decades. However, you might also be familiar with the negative portrayal of video games. While in the past our mothers would tell us to stop playing as it will damage our eyesight, nowadays \u003Cstrong>the medium is being blamed for being a cause of violent and aggressive behaviour among its adopters\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Last year, the President of the United States even \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nbcnews.com\u002Fpolitics\u002Fdonald-trump\u002Ffact-check-trump-suggests-video-games-blame-mass-shootings-n1039411\" target=\"_blank\">suggested that\u003C\u002Fa> video games are to blame for mass shootings.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another criticised aspect of games is the length. Playtimes vary from a couple of minutes to several dozens of hours. Some of the most popular games are quite time-consuming. For instance, \u003Cem>The Witcher III \u003C\u002Fem>can take \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhowlongtobeat.com\u002Fgame?id=10270\" target=\"_blank\">up to 100 hours to beat\u003C\u002Fa>. This can be a real issue for a significant minority whose behavioural and social abilities will be impaired. Proper therapy and followup will be required for those affected. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>… Or Game On?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, for 90% of gamers, no harmful effects or negative long-term consequences can be found. McDaniel, a very optimistic doctor of his era, for the year 1999. His predictions included a 150 year life span, a cancer vaccine, and the complete eradication of infectious disease. The book is a thought experiment about how society would be different if it were genderless. Gattaca, a science-fiction drama starring Ethan Hawke, also paints a rather dark picture about the possible outcomes of genomics. One of the greatest fears of mankind is that AI will become so sophisticated that it will work better than the human brain and after a while it will aim to take control over our lives and people lose their ability to think freely. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Ftechnology-30290540\">Stephen Hawking even said that the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Stanley Kubrick’s iconic science fiction movie 2001: A Space Odyssey based on Arthur C. Clarke’s book touches upon these feelings. It aims to cover the whole history of mankind – from prehistoric, barbaric times until the final race between men and machine. According to its story, some time in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon’s surface, where yet another monolith was found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers and human to reach the monolith placers. The omnipotent gaze of the Big Brother who supervises and controls everything – and punishes the ones who do not behave as expected. George Orwell’s famous dystopia, 1984 is one of the most brilliant books ever written about the topic or generally, for that matter. According to the story, a special police unit is able to arrest murderers before they commit their crimes. And what if the officer from that special unit is accused of a future murder? Does he have a free will to change the course of events and his own fate? Lately, robots not only feature in movies as episode-characters but started to gain more significant roles – as a reaction to happenings in real life.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Frobotics-healthcare\u002F\">certain robot companions\u003C\u002Fa> who can serve as a social partner in order to alleviate loneliness or treat mental health issues. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.jibo.com\u002F\">Jibo\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.ald.softbankrobotics.com\u002Fen\u002Fcool-robots\u002Fpepper\">Pepper\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.parorobots.com\u002F\">Paro\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.bluefrogrobotics.com\u002Fen\u002Fhome\u002F\">Buddy\u003C\u002Fa> are all existing examples. Some of them even have touch sensors, cameras and microphones, thus their owners can get into discussions with them, ask them to find a great concert for that night or just remind them about their medications.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Such robot companions might offer a solution in an aging society, where it is going to be more and more important and challenging to take care of the elderly. \u003Cem>Robot & Frank\u003C\u002Fem> (2012) touches upon the issue with great sensitivity. It focuses on a robot with artificial intelligence that can do this job in almost a human way. The estrangement part is where the author tries to extrapolate and think ahead which creates the feeling of alienation in the reader. This is a wonderful way of thinking about the future while keeping current possibilities in mind.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Science fiction is amazing and we need to digest not only those pieces that feature paradises and utopias, but also those describing a dystopic world. Sci-fi is not only for geeks and nerds.
