These measure the basic functions of one’s body, helping clinicians assess the general health and recovery progress of patients.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Recently, a new trend has emerged where artificial intelligence (AI)-based apps are detecting vital signs as well as possible illness indicators from patients’ faces alone. While this technology is only starting to become more prevalent, this trend might point to a future where one’s face serves as a vital sign indicator of its own.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In anticipation of such a scenario unfolding, we take a look at what the technology can currently do based on three recent examples, and the implications for future medical practice.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>1. Determining patients’ prognosis\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Due to individual variations in genetics and lifestyle choices, each person ages at a different rate. This is why someone’s looks might not correspond to their chronological age, and this \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flandig\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS2589-7500(25)00042-1\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">is a factor\u003C\u002Fa> in medical assessments as well. A patient’s appearance when they enter a doctor’s office impacts clinical decision-making, such as the risk-benefit ratio of certain procedures and the patient’s prognosis (the course of their medical condition). However, this visual assessment can be impaired by individual biases, thereby impacting objective care decisions.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>New findings from \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.thelancet.com\u002Fjournals\u002Flandig\u002Farticle\u002FPIIS2589-7500(25)00042-1\u002Ffulltext\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a Mass General Brigham study\u003C\u002Fa> indicate that AI technology could help in the process. Researchers at the institute developed FaceAges, an AI-based app \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psychologytoday.com\u002Fus\u002Fblog\u002Fthe-digital-self\u002F202505\u002Fface-value-when-your-appearance-becomes-a-vital-sign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">trained on nearly 59,000 images\u003C\u002Fa> of healthy individuals. Combining FaceAges with clinicians’ assessments even \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.psychologytoday.com\u002Fus\u002Fblog\u002Fthe-digital-self\u002F202505\u002Fface-value-when-your-appearance-becomes-a-vital-sign\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">improved the latter’s accuracy\u003C\u002Fa> at forecasting six-month survival.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>“We can use artificial intelligence (AI) to estimate a person’s biological age from face pictures, and our study shows that information can be clinically meaningful,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fneurosciencenews.com\u002Fai-face-aging-cancer-28876\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said the study’s corresponding author\u003C\u002Fa> Hugo Aerts, PhD, director of the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine (AIM) program at Mass General Brigham. “This work demonstrates that a photo like a simple selfie contains important information that could help to inform clinical decision-making and care plans for patients and clinicians.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Despite its promise, FaceAges \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fneurosciencenews.com\u002Fai-face-aging-cancer-28876\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">isn’t yet ready\u003C\u002Fa> for use in a real-world clinical setting as it requires further testing.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2. Contactless vital signs monitor\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Taking vital signs measurements usually involves a dedicated instrument such as a thermometer or blood pressure cuff that comes into contact with the patient’s body. This can be a cause for discomfort and limited access to crucial information.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>PanopticAI offers a solution that does not require specialised instrument or contact with the patient. With the power of AI, their \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fpanoptic.ai\u002Fvitals\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vitals app\u003C\u002Fa> turns regular devices with a camera into real-time biomarker scanners. It has \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.hkstp.org\u002Fpark-life\u002Fnews-and-events\u002Fnews\u002Ffda-clears-worlds-first-mobile-app-for-contactless-pulse-rate-measurement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">already been adopted\u003C\u002Fa> across healthcare institutions in Hong Kong as well as by multinational health insurer Bupa.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>&#8220;Traditional vital sign monitoring wearables are often costly and uncomfortable, leading to poor adherence,” \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicaleconomics.com\u002Fview\u002Fapp-that-uses-iphone-to-monitor-vital-signs-receives-fda-clearance\">said \u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicaleconomics.com\u002Fview\u002Fapp-that-uses-iphone-to-monitor-vital-signs-receives-fda-clearance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chibo \u003C\u002Fa>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicaleconomics.com\u002Fview\u002Fapp-that-uses-iphone-to-monitor-vital-signs-receives-fda-clearance\">Tang\u003C\u002Fa>, managing partner of Gobi Partners, a financial backer of the company. “PanopticAI&#8217;s FDA-cleared app, however, makes monitoring your vital signs as easy as using your smartphone, empowering patients to become active participants in their own health care journeys.&#8221;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company’s app \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medicaleconomics.com\u002Fview\u002Fapp-that-uses-iphone-to-monitor-vital-signs-receives-fda-clearance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has even been FDA-cleared\u003C\u002Fa> for contactless pulse rate measurement, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.hkstp.org\u002Fpark-life\u002Fnews-and-events\u002Fnews\u002Ffda-clears-worlds-first-mobile-app-for-contactless-pulse-rate-measurement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expects approvals\u003C\u002Fa> for other measurements in the future. Respiratory rate analyser\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Respiratory rate refers to the number of breaths a person takes per minute. For adults at rest, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmy.clevelandclinic.org\u002Fhealth\u002Farticles\u002F10881-vital-signs\" target=\"_blank\">the normal rate\u003C\u002Fa> is usually between 12-18 breaths per minute. A respiratory rate that goes above or below this range can be indicative of an underlying health condition.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Taiwan-based’s FaceHeart recently \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fasia\u002Ftaiwanese-ai-company-obtains-510k-video-based-respiratory-rate-gauge\" target=\"_blank\">received FDA clearance\u003C\u002Fa> for the respiratory rate measurement component of its tool. By using a device’s camera, the underlying AI can monitor this vital sign from the user’s face. It is shaping up to become another contactless vital signs monitor leveraging the face as a source.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Is the face the future of vital signs analysis?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As these recent examples indicate, AI-based facial analysis can provide a wealth of vital patient information that can aid in clinical decision-making. In recent years, similar technologies have been used to detect strokes and classify skin conditions. The regulatory approval of some facial analysis software further highlights the potential of such tools to make vital signs monitoring more accessible, less invasive and more personalised.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Nevertheless, their widespread adoption is contingent on their acceptance by the medical and patient community. With a focus on facial scans, people might be more concerned about the privacy implications compared to traditional vital signs monitoring means.
