One of \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwill-medical-workers-deal-with-ptsd-after-covid-19\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">our own April articles\u003C\u002Fa> was titled “Will Medical Workers Deal With PTSD After COVID-19?”. If it wasn’t clear, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fare-we-living-in-a-dystopia-136908\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">an article published\u003C\u002Fa> earlier this year in \u003Cem>The Conversation \u003C\u002Fem>rightly asks: “Are we living in a dystopia?”.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Indeed, what was once relegated to the fertile minds of fiction novelists has become daily occurrences. Many are drawing similarities to “prophetic” works of fiction such as the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ffilm.avclub.com\u002Fthirty-years-ago-akira-predicted-the-chaos-of-2020-1844237508\" target=\"_blank\">civil unrest in anime \u003Cem>Akira\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa>; or our over-reliance on deliveries and need to self-isolate \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fgbatemp.net\u002Fthreads\u002Fdeath-stranding-pc-version-impression.570219\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">as depicted in the \u003Cem>Death Stranding \u003C\u002Fem>video game\u003C\u002Fa>. From bushfires through riots to the pestering COVID-19, 2020 feels like a fever dream we must experience lucidly.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-image\">\u003Cfigure class=\"aligncenter size-large\">\u003Cimg loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fcdn.medicalfuturist.com\u002Fwp-content\u002Fuploads\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F2020-natural-disasters.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29239\"\u002F>\u003Cfigcaption>Source: http:\u002F\u002Frobotconsumer.com\u002F\u003C\u002Ffigcaption>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\u003C\u002Fdiv>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Even though only a little more than half of the year has elapsed, our global experience of it so far can be summarized in one word: dystopian. However, even this term might need some revision. The Cambridge Dictionary \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fdictionary.cambridge.org\u002Fdictionary\u002Fenglish\u002Fdystopia\" target=\"_blank\">defines ‘dystopia’\u003C\u002Fa> as “a very bad or unfair society in which there is a lot of suffering, especially an imaginary society in the future after something terrible has happened.” Merriam Webster’s \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.merriam-webster.com\u002Fdictionary\u002Fdystopia\" target=\"_blank\">definition of the same word\u003C\u002Fa> is that of “an imagined world or society in which people lead wretched, dehumanised, fearful lives.”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These definitions use the term “imaginary” or “imagine” but we’re far from an imaginary situation; notwithstanding our longing for it to be the case. With ongoing natural and political crises, one cannot stop from contrasting our current situation to those depictions from books, movies or even video games. Since our reality seems to be blurring the lines with fiction, it&nbsp;begs the question: did anyone break open a cursed seal?&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The case for Jumanji\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In the 1995 cult classic movie starring Robin Williams, the eponymous \u003Cem>Jumanji\u003C\u002Fem> refers to an unearthed board game sealed away in a chest for a century. Upon rolling a dice, the game unleashes wild animals and carnivorous plants into the real world; all of which wreak havoc in their wake.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>While in our world there’s no such cursed \u003Cem>Jumanji \u003C\u002Fem>game (but we did open \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.livescience.com\u002F63110-mysterious-black-sarcophagus-opened.html\" target=\"_blank\">a foreboding-looking sarcophagus\u003C\u002Fa> in Egypt a couple of years back), in 2020 we share the havoc unleashed by natural forces similar to the stampeding animals. In January, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Faustralia-is-blazing-into-the-pyrocene-the-age-of-fire\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">bushfires\u003C\u002Fa> \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Faustralia-is-blazing-into-the-pyrocene-the-age-of-fire\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">ravaged\u003C\u002Fa> Australia, the likes of which models did not expect \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.com\u002Fstory\u002Fthe-terrible-consequences-of-australias-uber-bushfires\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">until the next century\u003C\u002Fa>. The resulting smoke led to \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Faustralia-news\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F21\u002Fsmoke-from-australias-bushfires-killed-far-more-people-than-the-fires-did-study-says\" target=\"_blank\">over 10 times the number of deaths\u003C\u002Fa> than those who succumbed directly to the fires. In the same month, Indonesia \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftime.com\u002F5761097\u002Fjakarta-indonesia-floods\u002F\">experienced devastating floods\u003C\u002Fa> that took 60 lives. Countries like \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bbc.com\u002Fnews\u002Fav\u002Fworld-asia-china-36722968\u002Fdrone-video-shows-scale-of-china-floods\" target=\"_blank\">China\u003C\u002Fa>, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fenvironment\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F13\u002Fclimate-crisis-blamed-for-rains-and-floods-that-have-killed-150-in-brazil\" target=\"_blank\">Brazil\u003C\u002Fa> and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002Fvideos\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F20\u002Fasia-floods-india-bangladesh-china-hancocks-pkg-intl-hnk-vpx.cnn\" target=\"_blank\">India\u003C\u002Fa> experienced floods that caused hundreds of deaths and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dw.com\u002Fen\u002Fmonsoon-floods-in-india-nepal-displace-4-million\u002Fa-54237201\" target=\"_blank\">displaced millions\u003C\u002Fa>. Croatia’s capital, Zagreb, experienced its \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fworld\u002F2020\u002Fmar\u002F22\u002Fcroatia-earthquake-causes-widespread-damage-zagreb\" target=\"_blank\">biggest quake in 140 years\u003C\u002Fa>. And, of course, the WHO declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.statnews.com\u002F2020\u002F03\u002F11\u002Fwho-declares-the-coronavirus-outbreak-a-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">in March\u003C\u002Fa>. Even during this global crisis, other \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fphoto\u002F2020\u002F07\u002Fphotos-locust-swarms-2020\u002F613732\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">Asian and East African countries\u003C\u002Fa> declared additional national crises \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.dailymail.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002Farticle-7960989\u002FPakistan-gripped-worst-locust-plague-20-years.html\" target=\"_blank\">due to the worst locust swarms\u003C\u002Fa> in over two decades.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These roller-coaster of events hitting one country after another eclipsed other happenings. These might, in fact, have been the year’s highlight had it been another year than 2020. Indeed, snow \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F05\u002F21\u002Fworld\u002Fgreen-snow-antarctica-climate-change-intl-scli-scn\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">turned green\u003C\u002Fa> in Antarctica and it got dissipated in the flood of news. The occurrence is not due to some experiment; rather it&#8217;s a direct result of global warming leading to blooming algae in those regions. Another piece of news that flew under the radar was when the Pentagon \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nytimes.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F28\u002Fus\u002Fpentagon-ufo-videos.html\" target=\"_blank\">confirmed the authenticity of UFO footage\u003C\u002Fa>. Right, that’s 2020 and it’s not even over.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>Emulating a dystopia&#8230; for your own good?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Aside from the surge of natural calamities that replicate living in a round of \u003Cem>Jumanji\u003C\u002Fem>, the COVID-19 pandemic led to developments that eerily drew parallels to other works of fiction.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Prior to this public health crisis, having every citizens’ activity tracked would have been dismissed as Orwellian. But nowadays, this is the reality in many countries as a means of contact tracing. South Korea tracked bank transactions, CCTV footage and phone use \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Ftheconversation.com\u002Fcoronavirus-south-koreas-success-in-controlling-disease-is-due-to-its-acceptance-of-surveillance-134068\" target=\"_blank\">to control the virus’ spread\u003C\u002Fa>. Such methods are gaining traction \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-data-privacy-during-a-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">among many governments\u003C\u002Fa>, but not without issues.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>South Korea’s method laid bare \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fyour-data-privacy-during-a-pandemic\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">personal and intimate information\u003C\u002Fa>, which led to rumour mongering. In India, some of those who did not use the mandatory contact tracing app were \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.wired.co.uk\u002Farticle\u002Findia-contact-tracing-app-mandatory-arogya-setu\" target=\"_blank\">refused medical care\u003C\u002Fa>. Amnesty International reported “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.amnesty.org\u002Fen\u002Flatest\u002Fnews\u002F2020\u002F05\u002Fqatar-covid19-contact-tracing-app-security-flaw\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">serious security vulnerabilities\u003C\u002Fa>” in Qatar’s mandatory contact tracing app. These could allow cyberattackers to access highly sensitive personal information such as names, national ID, health status and location data of over one million users. And such tracking methods used during the pandemic could linger after the virus subsides to establish such a rule. Prior to this crisis, some governments were investing heavily in tools like facial recognition and phone tracking. With these options becoming accepted measures to curb the virus’ spread, some governments could still use this opportunity to enforce long-lasting privacy-violating measures on a large scale. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Some dubbed Moscow’s digital tracking system as the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F04\u002F14\u002Fworld\u002Fmoscow-cyber-tracking-qr-code-intl\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">‘cyber Gulag’\u003C\u002Fa>. While in Hungary, \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Farticles\u002F2020-03-30\u002Forban-takes-sole-command-of-hungary-with-pandemic-emergency-law\" target=\"_blank\">an emergency-rule law\u003C\u002Fa> allowed the Prime Minister to rule by sole decree indefinitely, a move internationally criticised and \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Farticle\u002Fus-health-coronavirus-hungary-emergency\u002Fhungarian-pms-power-to-rule-by-decree-to-end-on-june-20-government-idUSKBN2321VF\" target=\"_blank\">later rescinded\u003C\u002Fa>. Those familiar with Margaret Atwood’s \u003Cem>The Handmaid’s Tale\u003C\u002Fem> might recall how a crisis led to a regime that completely reorganised society.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>You know that the lines between the real world and dystopian fiction are seriously getting blurred when even the creator of the dystopian series \u003Cem>Black Mirror \u003C\u002Fem>isn’t working on a new season. In fact, he shifted his focus \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fafrica.businessinsider.com\u002Ftech\u002Fnetflixs-black-mirror-creator-isnt-working-on-a-new-season-because-he-doesnt-think\u002Fgjmn1px#:~:text=Netflix's%20%22Black%20Mirror%22%20creator%20Charlie,hit%20sci%2Dfi%20anthology%20series.\" target=\"_blank\">towards comedic scripts\u003C\u002Fa>. Those dictionary definitions mentioned above in the introduction might need to scrap the ‘imagined’ part when it comes to dystopias after all.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>2020 isn’t over: threats of a second wave?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>In early April, we published an article titled “\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhen-and-how-will-covid-19-end\u002F#\" target=\"_blank\">When And How Will COVID-19 End?\u003C\u002Fa>”. In it, we forecasted 3 possible scenarios that we could face before the pandemic ends. From the current trends, it seems like we are on track for Scenario #2.&nbsp;\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cfigure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\u003Cdiv class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\u003Ciframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"When and How Will COVID-19 End? \u002F Episode 15 - The Medical Futurist\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.youtube.com\u002Fembed\u002FlvPjeJbk9V4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen>\u003C\u002Fiframe>\n\u003C\u002Fdiv>\u003C\u002Ffigure>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Most countries enforced lockdowns and travel restrictions following the surge of cases locally. However, many lifted these restrictions in late spring, leading to a spike in new cases. In late July, Japan \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.japantimes.co.jp\u002Fnews\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F22\u002Fnational\u002Ftokyo-coronavirus-yuriko-koike\u002F#.XxhOw54zbic\" target=\"_blank\">reported its single-day record\u003C\u002Fa> with 795 new COVID-19 cases. New spikes of local infections in China’s Xinjiang province led to the capital entering \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F20\u002Fasia\u002Fcoronavirus-xinjiang-urumqi-intl-hnk\u002Findex.html\" target=\"_blank\">a &#8216;wartime&#8217; lockdown\u003C\u002Fa>. Eastern European countries \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.euronews.com\u002F2020\u002F07\u002F12\u002Fcovid-19-surge-in-new-coronavirus-cases-in-eastern-europe-prompts-new-restrictions\" target=\"_blank\">faced similar surges\u003C\u002Fa>, leading to the reintroduction of restrictions.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As The Medical Futurist forecasted, we’ll likely battle with the pandemic throughout 2020. Some researchers \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fscience.sciencemag.org\u002Fcontent\u002F368\u002F6493\u002F860\">even suggest that\u003C\u002Fa>, in the U.S., “\u003Cem>prolonged or intermittent social distancing may be necessary into 2022.\u003C\u002Fem>”\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, the duration of one’s immunity to SARS-CoV-2 is uncertain.
