These now include general women’s health issues just as sexual wellness, pregnancy and maternal care, disease management, menopause, pelvic health and even mental health-related problems. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As Femtech is one of the key areas we expect to grow in 2023, we tried to collect companies on top of their game in the conventional fertility and\u002For pregnancy area. We also included startups and ventures who are looking way beyond that. Here’s our guide to 10 outstanding companies in women’s health.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u003Cstrong>The women’s health market\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As technology companies recognised that the area offers excellent potential, and women started to use digital health increasingly, or better say, “Femtech” products for female wellbeing, the culture around women’s health issues began to change. While the global Femtech market is\u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.prnewswire.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Ffemtech-market-to-reach-usd-60-01-billion-by-2027--cagr-of-15-6-emergen-research-301130111.html\" target=\"_blank\"> expected to be worth\u003C\u002Fa> more than USD 108 billion by 2032, technology companies’ attitude towards women’s health is far from ideal. A growing number of female-led startups and female VCs are also expected to take the stage, but the segment is still very male-oriented; and tech solutions \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.forbes.com\u002Fsites\u002Ftomokoyokoi\u002F2021\u002F03\u002F08\u002Ffemtech-going-from-niche-to-mainstream-in-2021\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reflect this dominance\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>We discussed \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Ffemtech-womens-health\" target=\"_blank\">here\u003C\u002Fa> in detail how and why period tracker apps, smart scales or fitness wearables can fail women, especially pregnant women; and concluded that it needs to change. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The need for innovation in \u003Cstrong>women’s health\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Still, there’s a great need for innovation in the female health tech market. It will also be (finally) assessed: a few years ago consulting firm Gallup teamed up with women’s tech company Hologic to create the \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhologic.womenshealthindex.com\u002Fen\" target=\"_blank\">Global Women’s Health Index\u003C\u002Fa> – an initiative to track female reproductive health, domestic violence, preventive care, access to care and early disease detection. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>There are numerous \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fhealth-trackers-are-changing-the-experience-of-pregnancy\" target=\"_blank\">health sensors, wearables, and apps\u003C\u002Fa> that support pregnant women and their little ones on the journey towards birth and beyond. Although there was an \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bloomberg.com\u002Fnews\u002Ffeatures\u002F2019-04-01\u002Fbirth-control-app-natural-cycles-is-more-effective-than-the-pill\" target=\"_blank\">uptake in criticism\u003C\u002Fa> towards the method, the app has since been \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fappfinder.orcha.co.uk\u002Freview\u002F69721\u002F\" target=\"_blank\">reviewed by ORCHA\u003C\u002Fa>, an independent health app evaluation body, scoring 84 per cent. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The company has also introduced an FDA-cleared pregnancy planning app and launched a Bluetooth thermometer that easily pairs with its apps. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.avawomen.com\u002F\">\u003Cstrong>Ava Women\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> – the fertility wearable \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Zurich-based company developed the Ava tracker for women who want to know more about their bodies: observe their menstruation or ovulation cycles or follow their pregnancies. It is an FDA-registered and CE-certified device that measures skin temperature, resting pulse rate, breathing rate, heart rate variability ratio, perfusion, movement, bioimpedance, heat loss, and sleep. Via logging symptoms and data, users can identify changes that may indicate potential health issues. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>At the same time, they can also get a clearer picture and a more accurate prediction of when they are likely to be most fertile – no matter whether they try to get pregnant or avoid that situation. The Medical Futurist tested it \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-ava-fertility-tracker-review\" target=\"_blank\">here\u003C\u002Fa> and had an overall positive experience. Whether it’s about avoiding pregnancy or intending to conceive, women prefer to get support in this field. She didn’t understand the symptoms but was eager to know more. The New York-based Maven offers traditional medical specialities for women to choose from and employs back-to-work or sleep coaches, relationship consultants, or mental health therapists. They had been doing \u003Ca rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.benefitnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fmaven-is-leading-the-way-in-womens-and-family-telehealth\" target=\"_blank\">telemedicine\u003C\u002Fa> long before COVID-19 forced clinics to do so, and their market advantage gave the company an edge it is happy to use.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Maven Clinic offers video appointments and private messaging with a widespread family and women’s health practitioner network. It provides services from family planning and pregnancy through postpartum to surrogacy or career coaching. Quite a gap-filler.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6) \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhera-med.com\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Cstrong>HeraMED\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fa>\u003Cstrong> – listening to babies’ heart sounds\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Israel-based HeraMED has been offering various products since 2011, promising peace of mind for expecting mothers and their families, for example, by monitoring fetal heart rate. With it, providers can manage patient activity remotely through a dashboard, while patients complete assigned tasks from their personalised care plan via a mobile app and a kit of connected devices.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Ch3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7) \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Flactapp.es\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LactApp\u003C\u002Fa> – the guardian of smart breastfeeding\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fh3>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Another stage in motherhood widely covered by digital health technologies is the period of breastfeeding. Many companies aim to help struggling mothers, but Spanish LactApp stands out with its approach. It provides a rich resource of information about lactation and maternity. The app helps mothers through the first couple of months with a baby. Since its 2017 launch, they have attended to more than 19 million queries. The app is so successful that almost a quarter of new Spanish moms use it.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The app contains an automatic symptom checker with over 76,000 paths that lead to 2,500 unique responses, plus an in-app chat that answers new mothers’ questions. This chat is currently monitored and answered by LactApp’s in-house lactation consultants and maternity experts. It increases access to information, health providers and community for women seeking relief for hormone-driven symptoms like hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, and libido loss. And although the company is very much focused on its own product line, they do a great job of breaking the taboo around menopause. In 2020 the company released a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fhealth.gennev.com\u002Fmenopause-journey-map\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Menopause Journey Map\u003C\u002Fa> to support women in managing their symptoms.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Every woman goes through menopause in her life, and this phase can last up to 10 years. At-home monitoring can ease this stress, especially when the patients can directly send daily measurements to the doctor’s office. Pregnascan aims to help pregnant women monitor their conditions as well as diagnose potentially malignant conditions. As early recognition of such conditions can help doctors to intervene on time, the company’s remote care support is key to their concept.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Pregnascan system is suitable for regular measurement and recording of heart rate, arterial oxygen saturation (SpO2), pulse wave analysis measured by a smart pulse oximeter that connects with the user’s smartphone. It also logs blood pressure, weight and any other events and links all data in the cloud. Transformers are a type of LLM, but not all LLMs are transformers. Transformers on the other hand can be best grasped as brilliant autocomplete machines: they are trained to predict what comes next based on the previously given data. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How do they learn?\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many methods to train generative AI models, and most of the now successful models use a combination of various methods.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>GANs are typically taught through unsupervised learning – which means that the AI is not learning from labelled data – there is no one showing it pictures labelled as \u003Cem>cat \u003C\u002Fem>and \u003Cem>not-cat\u003C\u002Fem>. The “supervision” in GANs comes from the adversarial process where the generator network (the forger) tries to fool the discriminator network (the art detective), and the discriminator network tries to correctly classify whether an input is real or fake. For a simpler explanation, head over to the previously linked GAN article. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Large language models, like ChatGPT or Bard are often trained using both supervised and self-supervised learning methods. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For instance, the GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) series by OpenAI is trained using a form of self-supervised learning – according to ChatGPT. The models are given a large corpus of text and learn to predict the next word in a sentence given the previous words. In this case, the “labels” are the subsequent words in the sentences themselves, so no explicit labels are needed.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Google’s Bard on the other hand was educated through a combination of supervised and self-supervised learning, on a massive dataset of text and code, including both labeled and unlabeled data, using the PaLM 2 model.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>General-use LLMs\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>ChatGPT was the first text-generating AI algorithm that became a massive hit among everyday people, getting a hundred million users in just two months, making it the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.reuters.com\u002Ftechnology\u002Fchatgpt-sets-record-fastest-growing-user-base-analyst-note-2023-02-01\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fastest-growing consumer application in history\u003C\u002Fa>. Since then there are several other widely successful algorithms, like Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing – the latter is also based on GPT-4 and was customised for search. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>These algorithms were not specifically trained for medical purposes and the regulations are lacking, but they \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002F6-potential-medical-use-cases-for-chatgpt\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can still be used\u003C\u002Fa> for a number of purposes even in medicine, such as writing emails or summarising research papers. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Based on the\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fchatgpt-in-healthcare-what-the-science-says\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> first published studies\u003C\u002Fa>, three main areas of focus for ChatGPT emerged, namely 1. clinical use, 2. answering medical questions and assisting in education, and 3. scientific writing and research. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>This field is \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhat-does-gpt-4-mean-for-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">developing at breathtaking speed\u003C\u002Fa>, and \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fchatgpt-alternatives-for-healthcare-and-research\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many alternatives are emerging\u003C\u002Fa>, both for medical and general use. The algorithms are becoming more and more versatile \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-best-chatgpt-plugins-how-to-add-browsing-learning-wolfram-and-more\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gaining new capabilities\u003C\u002Fa>.  \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>There are many open questions, but we already \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fwhats-next-for-chatgpt-in-healthcare\u002F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have some answers\u003C\u002Fa> as well, such as LLMs are not becoming authors in scientific papers, and that medical alternatives will arrive soon. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Large language models specifically trained for medicine\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Given the potential price of mistakes in healthcare, using just any LLM is a no-go for many tasks. You don’t want a diagnostic aid that generates answers from thin air every now and then. Here is where specialised algorithms enter the arena.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As of now, the most advanced contestant is Google’s Med-PaLM 2. We introduced it \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fmedpalm-new-ai-medical-chatbots-will-soon-be-better-than-waiting-for-a-doctor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in a detailed post\u003C\u002Fa> earlier and discussed why getting help from a medical chatbot as the first line of contact might soon become a lower-risk option than waiting for a doctor. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A lot has happened in the past 6 months, and Google recently announced how much their medical LLM improved. \u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>A new study published in Nature revealed that Med-PaLM 2 answered medically related questions with 92.6% accuracy – \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.mobihealthnews.com\u002Fnews\u002Fgoogles-medical-llm-proves-increase-accuracy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mobihealthnews reported\u003C\u002Fa>.
