The beginning of a new era in diabetes care is upon us with the realities of the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fliving-with-an-artificial-pancreas\u002F\">FDA-approved artificial pancreas\u003C\u002Fa> or such small, but significant innovations as a \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.medgadget.com\u002F2017\u002F12\u002Faccurate-glucose-monitor-integrated-inside-smartphone-case.html\">glucose monitor built into phone cases\u003C\u002Fa>. Artificial narrow intelligence (ANI), mainly computer vision and natural language processing, started to take its place in healthcare – in spite of such \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fsix-challenges-to-tackle-before-artificial-intelligence-redesigns-healthcare\u002F\">bumps on the road until widespread use as overhyping the technology\u003C\u002Fa>. Precision medicine is incrementally reshaping cancer care methods: DNA-tests from tumors and patients are used to work out targeted treatments in the fight against cancer.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, I \u003Cstrong>predicted that a health insurance company will launch a package which will include fitness trackers and wearables\u003C\u002Fstrong>; that a big tech company will step up its efforts in digital health; and further steps will be made in the development of the CRISPR genome-editing method. Although we still have to wait for the first clinical trials, New Scientist already reported in April 2017 that there are as many as 20 human trials underway, mostly in China. The Canadian government recognized the current challenges in their healthcare system and decided to take action. The Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology invited researchers, ethicists, entrepreneurs, and futurists like me to discuss the way forward. In October 2017, they published a report entitled \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fsencanada.ca\u002Fcontent\u002Fsen\u002Fcommittee\u002F421\u002FSOCI\u002Freports\u002FRoboticsAI3DFinal_Web_e.pdf\">\u003Cem>Challenge Ahead: Integrating Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and 3D Printing Technologies into Canada’s Healthcare Systems\u003C\u002Fem>\u003C\u002Fa> with actionable recommendations for the future.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The Senate Committee realized the transformative power of 3D printing, A.I., and robotics, while it also seems to be willing to tackle ethical concerns, legal issues around these new technologies and their consequences on the labor market. The group recommended the government to host a Forum for Health Discovery so entrepreneurs and innovators could present their latest healthcare related work; to convene a National Conference on Robotics, A.I. and 3D Printing in Healthcare and establish various working groups to deal with technological, ethical and regulatory concerns of innovations in the industry. In November, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnewsroom.uhc.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Fmotion-update.html\">Qualcomm and United Healthcare announced\u003C\u002Fa> that they have integrated Samsung and Garmin wearables into their national wellness program. It enables eligible plan participants to earn more than $1,000 per year by meeting daily walking goals.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>As according to \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.wareable.com\u002Fwearable-tech\u002F245-million-wearable-devices-sold-2019-1606\">estimations\u003C\u002Fa> 245 million wearable devices will be sold in 2019, more and more accurate data sets about our lifestyle through trackers and wearables will become available. It is inevitable that insurance companies will try to utilize them. Researchers achieved amazing results with computer vision in the field of medical imaging. Scientists at the University of Adelaide have been experimenting with an \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Farticles\u002Fs41598-017-01931-w#Fig4\">AI system that is said to be able to tell if you are going to die\u003C\u002Fa>. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. From IBM Watson through Philips, Agfa, Siemens to GE, giant healthcare players have already started integrating AI into their medical imaging software systems.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Moreover, the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.prnewswire.com\u002Fnews-releases\u002Farterys-receives-fda-clearance-for-the-first-zero-footprint-medical-imaging-analytics-cloud-software-with-deep-learning-for-cardiac-mri-300387880.html\">FDA approved the first cloud-based deep learning algorithm for cardiac imaging developed by Arterys in 2017\u003C\u002Fa>. It is a giant leap towards integrating A.I. into radiology which might become part of radiologists’ daily routine sooner than you think. Anna Fernandez, Health Informatics\u002FPrecision Medicine Lead at Booz Allen Hamilton told me that within 3 years we would have many machine learning algorithms in active clinical pilot testing and in approved use. It will help diagnose simpler cases and take over repetitive tasks. However, I’m sure that radiologists’ creative work will be necessary in the future to solve complex issues and supervising diagnostic processes. These tiny pills or gadgets combined with a sensor could track digestion and the absorption of drugs after swallowing them.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the FDA, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fedition.cnn.com\u002F2017\u002F11\u002F14\u002Fhealth\u002Ffda-digital-pill-abilify\u002Findex.html\">granted a green light for the first pill with a digital ingestion tracking system in 2017\u003C\u002Fa>. The drug called Abilify MyCite was developed by the Japanese Otsuka Pharmaceutical, augmented by an accompanying wearable patch produced by Proteus Digital Health. With the patient’s approval, the ingestible sensor communicates with the wearable sensor patch if the drug is taken; then the information is transmitted to a smartphone or tablet of the caretaker or the patient himself. While the start-up itself remained a separate legal entity, its app became an integral part of Roche’s new patient-centered digital health services platform in diabetes care. The acquisition made it possible for users to connect their mySugr app with Roche’s Accu-Chek tools, such as the Accu-Chek Guide glucose meter. The deal is important as it shows that huge pharma companies started to understand the value of health tech start-ups’ solutions and unique expertise. So, instead of trying to come up with their products and services on their own, they rather team up with market players coming up with niche, value-based results. Google has made steps forward in healthcare with \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.calicolabs.com\u002F\">Calico\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.humanlongevity.com\u002F\">Human Longevity Inc.\u003C\u002Fa> joined forces with Cleveland Clinic for a human genomics collaboration aimed at disease discovery and making aging a chronic condition. IBM has been developing its artificial intelligence program, Watson, and puts it to use in cardiology and cancer care.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>For this year, I expected another tech giant to make extra efforts in improving research in healthcare. In September 2017, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Ftechnology\u002F2017\u002F09\u002F24\u002Fmicrosoft-launches-new-healthcare-division-based-artificial\u002F\">Microsoft announced the launch of its new healthcare division\u003C\u002Fa> at its Cambridge research facility, as part of plans to use its artificial intelligence software to enter the health market. Although its research is in its infancy, studies and clinical probes show the method’s rapid development and incredible power. While in 2016, \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Farstechnica.com\u002Fscience\u002F2016\u002F01\u002Fgene-editing-shows-promise-in-treating-muscular-dystrophy\u002F\">experiments showed how\u003C\u002Fa> scientists were able to treat mice with Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy through gene editing, a year later the \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.technologyreview.com\u002Fs\u002F608350\u002Ffirst-human-embryos-edited-in-us\u002F\">MIT Technology Review reported\u003C\u002Fa> about the first known attempt at creating genetically modified human embryos in the United States.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>I predicted that in 2017, we would have a great chance for launching the first clinical trials to test the real power of CRISPR in changing devastating diseases. It’s happening. As I mentioned before, in May, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newscientist.com\u002Farticle\u002F2133095-boom-in-human-gene-editing-as-20-crispr-trials-gear-up\u002F\">New Scientist reported that as many as 20 human trials will be underway soon\u003C\u002Fa>, mostly in China. A few months later, in October, Nature reported that \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.nature.com\u002Fnews\u002Fchinese-scientists-fix-genetic-disorder-in-cloned-human-embryos-1.22694\">Chinese researchers created cloned embryos with a genetic mutation\u003C\u002Fa> for a potentially fatal blood disorder; then precisely corrected the DNA through “base editing”, a modification of the CRISPR\u002FCas-9 to show how to potentially prevent the condition at the earliest stages of development. Just look at all those who turn to the cryopreservation of the human body – to be able to wake up healthily from death after centuries. Michigan professor, Robert Ettinger proposed \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Ftechnology\u002F2008\u002Ffeb\u002F14\u002Fresearch.cryonics\">cryonics\u003C\u002Fa> in a book called The Prospect of Immortality, which argued that death could, in fact, be a reversible process. Ettinger, who died in 2011, went on to found the \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.cryonics.org\u002F\">Cryonics Institute\u003C\u002Fa> in Michigan where he, \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theguardian.com\u002Fscience\u002F2016\u002Fnov\u002F18\u002Fthe-cryonics-dilemma-will-deep-frozen-bodies-be-fit-for-new-life\">his mother and his first and second wives all now reside in metal flasks kept at −196 °C\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, there are \u003Cstrong>many more who believe that instead of immortality, humanity has to look at longevity and the chances to keep people healthy and alive for as long as possible\u003C\u002Fstrong>. With the drastic increase in life expectancy in the last centuries, the idea of longevity seems to be as close as never before. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.newyorker.com\u002Fmagazine\u002F2017\u002F04\u002F03\u002Fsilicon-valleys-quest-to-live-forever\">Silicon Valley clearly has a quest for that now\u003C\u002Fa>. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fnam.edu\u002Finitiatives\u002Fgrand-challenge-healthy-longevity\u002F\">U.S. National Academy launched a Grand Challenge in Healthy Longevity\u003C\u002Fa>, which will award at least twenty-five million dollars for breakthroughs in the field. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pacitaproject.eu\u002F\">Parliaments and Civil Society in Technology Assessment (PACITA)\u003C\u002Fa> is a project of the European Union bringing together stakeholders of healthcare in hopes to design policy, gather technological solutions, and promote awareness of assisting an aging society.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Do you think it’s impossible to live beyond a hundred years healthily? He would be considered a Methuselah in ancient Greece or Rome, where the average life expectancy was 30 years. The same would go for Ted if he had fought in the Hundred Year’s War against the French or if he had sailed with Columbus for the New World on the Santa Maria. Before the 19\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> century, people died much younger than today. Eternal love for your wife meant 10-20 years, maximum. However, \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.theatlantic.com\u002Fmagazine\u002Farchive\u002F2014\u002F10\u002Fwhat-happens-when-we-all-live-to-100\u002F379338\u002F\">since 1840, life expectancy at birth has risen about three months per year\u003C\u002Fa>. Thus, every year a newborn lives three months longer than those born the previous year\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Sweden, which keeps excellent demographic records, documents female life expectancy at 45 years of age in 1840 and 83 today.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Of course, there are huge differences between regions: if you are born in Morocco, you can expect a completely different life-span as in Canada. The two extremes are Sierra Leone and Japan: \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fen.wikipedia.org\u002Fwiki\u002FList_of_countries_by_life_expectancy\">life expectancy is 50.1 years in the former and 83.7 in the latter\u003C\u002Fa>. However, \u003Cstrong>\u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.telegraph.co.uk\u002Fnews\u002Fscience\u002Fscience-news\u002F11562492\u002FMeet-the-doctor-who-is-convinced-he-will-live-to-150.html\">experts believe that\u003C\u002Fa>\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Cstrong> with recent breakthroughs in science and medicine coupled with lifestyle changes, this number could reach far beyond 100 years.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although it is not obvious that people want to live longer. The \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.pewresearch.org\u002Ffact-tank\u002F2016\u002F09\u002F13\u002Famericans-are-wary-of-enhancements-that-could-enable-them-to-live-longer-and-stronger\u002F\">Pew Research Center surveyed thousands of Americans in 2013\u003C\u002Fa>. A third of them didn’t want to live past the age of 80, and 56 percent of adults said they would not want to live at least 120 years, which is considered the current upper limit of the human lifespan. Only a small minority of 8 percent wanted to live for more than a hundred years. What does it matter how old you are if you cannot use your body and brain to live a full life? Aging is generally associated with deteriorating health and decrepitude. That’s the primary reason why people wouldn’t want to live longer. Ideally, this should improve before life expectancy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>When you think about it\u003Cstrong>, the life of men and women lengthened so quickly in only a few decades that society hasn’t been able to adjust\u003C\u002Fstrong>. We can see that when \u003Cstrong>looking at overstrained pension schemes, economic distribution problems – but also deeper-rooted social structures and social values.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Even the idea of marriage and other social bonds might be in crisis because these constructions are slower to change than our life expectancy. Why wouldn’t they be? For example, people were told to live a married life and be faithful as long as they shall live for centuries. But how shall we do that if in the 19\u003Csup>th\u003C\u002Fsup> century that was 30 years at best and now it might even mean 60?\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>How could we extend our lifespan beyond 100 years of age if the effects of an aging population already strain our societies\u003C\u002Fstrong>? If younger generations cannot sustain the social system to provide care for their elders as they are growing older and older, significant structural changes will be necessary. Young, as well as older workers, will have to deal with the fact that people will retire increasingly later. Healthcare systems should prepare for the fact that health problems will quadruple in the coming years due to larger numbers of the elderly. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.un.org\u002Fen\u002Fdevelopment\u002Fdesa\u002Fpopulation\u002Fpublications\u002Fpdf\u002Fageing\u002FWPA2015_Report.pdf\">two billion people will be over the age of 60 by 2050\u003C\u002Fa>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>However, \u003Cstrong>the ultimate aim should be to sustain the quality of life during those long ye\u003C\u002Fstrong>ars instead of spending it bedridden in hospitals or home cares. \u003Cstrong>Paying more attention to living a healthy life and the use of technologies could offer a helping hand\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\n\n\n\u003Cp>Although we have no idea where exponential technological development might take us in the next 50 or 100 years, \u003Cstrong>trends show amazing possibilities for enhancing the human body and brain for keeping them fit\u003C\u002Fstrong>. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fthe-worlds-most-famous-real-life-cyborgs\u002F\">Special brain implants could improve our memory\u003C\u002Fa>. \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fmedicalfuturist.com\u002Fdigital-health-makes-you-a-superhero\u002F\">Exoskeletons could boost our strength\u003C\u002Fa>, and augment a whole range of our human capabilities. Some others help recover lost abilities: \u003Ca href=\"http:\u002F\u002Fwww.tvears.com\u002F\">TV Ears\u003C\u002Fa> lets people with hearing loss listen to the television clearly without turning up the volume. The Wright Stuff offers a range of products that make dressing up easier for anyone who cannot use one of their hands. The \u003Ca href=\"https:\u002F\u002Fwww.liftware.com\u002F\">Liftware stabilizing handle\u003C\u002Fa>, a smart utensil supports motion and enables the hand to shake 70 percent less making eating enjoyable again. There are many more similar innovations on the market and in the future, there will be even more digital solutions with the goal to sustain the quality of life for longer lifespans.
